Notes: Abstract The concept of absolute surface excess of adsorption accounts for the expansion of compression of the volume of a pure liquid under the influence of a solid surface. The absolute surface excess amount of substance can prove to be a powerful measure of the adsorption at a solid/binary liquid interface, too. The contributions of the composition and volumetric effects to the adsorption can be separated from each other in this concept, and both of them are experimentally accessible quantities.

Notes: Abstract The structure and the sorption properties of partially hydrophobized silicates (dodecylammonium and dodecyldiammonium vermiculites) have been investigated in aqueous solutions of 1-butanol. The alcohol is preferentially adsorbed on the surface. The interlayer composition is calculated from adsorption and x-ray diffraction data. In air-dried state the organic cations lie flat on the interlamellar surface. In aqueous butanol solutions, the basal spacing of dodecylammonium vermiculite gradually increases with the extent of butanol adsorption because the chains increasingly point away from the surface. The basal spacing of dodecyldiammonium vermiculite is virtually independent on the interlayer composition because the expansion of the interlayer space is sterically restricted and a relatively rigid structure is formed. The enthalpy of the displacement of water by 1-butanol has been determined by flow sorption microcalorimetry. The displacement process is endothermic.

Notes: Abstract Hydrophilic Stöber silica particles are stable in ethanol, but flocculation may be induced by the addition of sufficient cyclohexane. Low-shear rheological measurements indicated non-Newtonian behaviour beyond the critical cyclohexane concentration. The thickness and composition of the solvation layer around the particles were calculated from the adsorption excess isotherm on the basis of a multilayer adsorption model. The composition dependences of the Hamaker constants of the dispersion medium and the adsorption layer were obtained from optical dispersion measurements. A single-sheet, hard-sphere model predicted a weak van der Waals attraction in the ethanolic regime, but a strong attraction in the cyclohexane-rich region, in good accordance with the rheological properties of the dispersions and visual observations.

Notes: Abstract The choline, trigonelline, Nε-trimethyl-L-lysine content in the leaf tissue of tomato plants grown with varying amounts of nitrate nitrogen was determined by the OPLC method. The choline and trigonelline level in tomato leaves increased in direct ratio to the nitrogen supply. The possible role of these compounds in the physiology and in the augmented resistance of plants to nectrotizing stresses is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The algebraic methods of Hansen and Goodrich and the geometric methods of Motomura, Good and Everett were applied to define and investigate adsorption excess quantities at a solid/binary liquid interface. Both single-plane and two-plane geometric constructions were found to be consistent with the algebraic method. Relations between the relative, molar reduced and volumetric reduced areal excess concentrations and the amounts of components actually present in the interfacial layer are discussed.

Notes: Summary N,N-Dialkylhydrazones [DAHs; R1R2C=1N-2N(R3)2] were prepared and their Kováts retention indices determined on 100% dimethylpolysiloxane (HP-1) and 5% diphenyl and 95% dimethylpolysiloxane (HP-5) stationary phases. The physico-chemical and retention behaviour of the DAHs depend greatly on whether R2=H or an alkyl group. A similar difference is observed in the alkane and oxo homomorphic factors of DAHs formed from aldehydes or ketones. The difference is explained on the basis of NMR and quantum-chemical results by intramolecular interactions between R2 and the lone pair of the2N atom. A single linear equation is suitable for prediction of retention indices if parameters are introduced representing resonance structure (bond angle and electron density) besidesI oxo or the van der Waals' surface.
