Notes:
Abstract Six different sugars could be identified in a mixture of marine diatom species (primarilyCoscinodiscus concinnus, C. grani andBiddulphia sinensis), namely, 3 hexoses: galactose, glucose and mannose, and 3 pentoses: arabinose, xylose and ribose. In the limnetic diatomMelosira varians, however, only glucose and xylose were found. With respect to the amino acids no qualitative differences could be detected between the marine and limnetic diatoms, neither in the free amino acids, nor in the proteinhydrolysate. On the other hand, there are significant quantitative differences, such as the remarkably high amount of the aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine and tyrosine, in the marine diatoms. In the hydrolysate, glutamic acid and aspartic acid dominate, in the free amino acids, alanine and glutamic acid.
