Notes: Abstract The interaction between two high-grade polished fused silica plates separated by a thin layer of aqueous LiCl, NaCl and KCl solution, respectively, was determined by means of a selfdeveloped method. Concerning the repulsion created by overlap of the electrical double layers excellent agreement with the DLVO theory down to separation of about 5 nm were found. For still smaller separations a relatively strong additional repulsion arises which according to experimental evidence might be assigned to the overlap of hydration layers emanating chiefly from the alkali metal halide ions adsorbed onto the silica surfaces. Our results agree well with those obtained by Israelachvili et al. and Pashley, who used mica sheets.

Notes: Abstract States in34Ar up to 5.5 MeV excitation energy, populated by the32S(3He,nγ) reaction at 8–12 MeV bombarding energy, have been investigated with the Doppler shift attenuation method,nγ angular correlation andnγγ triple coincidence measurements. For the states at 2.09, 3.29 and 4.52 MeV the lifetimes 200±60 fs, 130±60 fs and 260±80 fs have been found, respectively. Thenγ correlations yielded the spin assignmentsJ μ=(2+) for the level at 4.13 MeV andJ μ=3− for the 4.52 MeV state, and the mixing ratiosδ(3.29→2.09)=−0.12±0.05 andδ(4.13→3.29)=−0.52±0.15. The results are compared with shell model calculations and predictions from the weak coupling unified model.

Notes: Abstract Scattering microparticles were found to determine the characteristic behavior of the laser energy of discharge pumped XeCl excimer lasers with aluminium electrodes. All experimental results indicate that sputtered aluminium reacts with chlorine, a constituent of the laser gas, and forms aluminium chloride particles. Chlorine was observed to be formed by a reaction of oxygen, contained as an impurity, with the halogen donor hydrogen chloride under discharge conditions.

Notes: Abstract The stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold of focused broad-band XeCl laser radiation depends on the ratio of the coherence length to the Rayleigh range, which is affected by the transverse beam quality. With reduction of the focal length, the threshold decreases first and then reaches a nearly constant value. In addition, the energy reflectivity is increased. On the other hand, pulse shortening occurs and the phase conjugation fidelity is decreased. Separation of single lines from the structured XeCl laser spectrum improves the SBS efficiency.

Notes: Summary A combined method was developed for characterization and differentiation of catecholamines in neuron populations containing more than one catecholamine, e.g. dopamine and norepinephrine. Its application to small intensely fluorescent (SIF-) cell clusters in sympathetic ganglia allows the successive demonstration of glyoxylic acid-induced catecholamine fluorescence and dopamine-β-hydroxylase by indirect immunofluorescence within the same tissue section. Applying this technique to an example, two types of SIF-cells were demonstrated in the guinea pig superior cervical ganglion.

Notes: Summary The formation of phenolase and the influence of phenols on metabolism were investigated with different strains of Polystictus versicolor. 1. In the presence of carbon sources which like glucose can easily be metabolized, the formation of laccase was repressed. In the beginning of autolytic processes, caused by the lack of nutrient, the laccase formation was induced by a deficient energy supply. 2. By addition of iodoacetic acid (10-4 m) it was possible to stimulate the enzyme production in presence of an easily metabolized carbon source, too. Higher concentrations of iodoacetic acid inhibited the laccase production. 3. Addition of uncoupling agents of oxidative phosphorilation such as 2,4-dinitrophenol (10-4 m) or pentachlorophenol (10-4 m) caused a significant formation of laccase in presence of easily metabolized carbon sources, too. Phenolic lignin degradation products, lignin and other substances for which an increase of enzyme production is described, showed an uncoupling effect, too. 4. Shortly after the addition of phenolic lignin degradation products a phosphate excretion into the culture medium and a decrease of the P/O ratio in the mycelia was observed. A few days after the addition the phosphate was uptaken again and nearly the original values of the P/O ratios were obtained. For the elimination of the inhibitory action of the lignin degradation products the laccase is important. 5. The transformation products formed by the action of laccase on phenols caused an increase of glucose and phosphate assimilation. In the presence of a nitrogen source they cause an increase of the dry weight of the mycelium.

Notes: Abstract. The passive satellite GFZ-1 has been orbiting the Earth since April 1995. The purpose of this mission is to improve the current knowledge of the Earth's gravity field by analysing gravitational orbit perturbations observed at unique low altitudes, below 400 km. GFZ-1 is one target of the international satellite laser ranging ground network. An evaluation of the first 30 months of GFZ-1 laser tracking data led to a new version of the global GRIM4-S4 satellite-only gravity field model: GRIM4-S4G. Information was obtained from GFZ-1 data for spherical harmonic coefficients up to degree 100, which was not possible in any earlier satellite-only gravity field solution. GFZ-1's contribution to a global 5 × 5° geoid and gravity field representations is moderate but visible with a 1 cm and 0.1 mGal gain in accuracy on a level of 75 cm and 5 mGal, respectively.
