Notes: Abstract It is argued that the preservation of truth by an inference relation is of little interest when premiss sets are contradictory. The notion of a level of coherence is introduced and the utility of modal logics in the semantic representation of sets of higher coherence levels is noted. It is shown that this representative role cannot be transferred to first order logic via frame theory since the modal formulae expressing coherence level restrictions are not first order definable. Finally, an inference relation, calledyielding, is introduced which is intermediate between the coherence preservingforcing relation introduced elsewhere by the authors and the coherence destroying, inference relation of classical logic.

Notes: Abstract Laser ablation of solid GaAs samples has been studied using one tunable pulsed dye laser. At relatively low laser power, enhancements of up to several hundred times have been observed in the yield of resonantly ionised Ga using laser wavelengths corresponding to the atomic transition 42 P 1/2-42 D 3/2. The influences of laser power and target geometry, on the ion yield and spectral profile, are discussed. It is argued that the resonant excitation and ionisation processes occur in the gas phase of the atoms ablated from the sample surface, and the observed asymmetric spectral profile results from laser-induced collisional processes, e.g., optical collisions, under conditions of relatively high atomic density in the interaction region. Potential applications are foreseen for resonant laser ablation in trace analysis.

Notes: Abstract The role of nonlinearity is explored in a mean-field dynamo model. Magnetic fields are amplified by the combined action of the α andω-effects, and as the field's intensity increases the Lorentz force becomes important. Torsional oscillations and meridional circulations are driven by the Lorentz force, and the oscillations are consistent with those measured on the surface of the Sun. The torsional oscillations feedback in the induction equation and saturate the magnetic field's growth by quenching differential rotation. This model can also help us understand the processes responsible for the range of periods seen in the activity cycles of other stars like the Sun.

Notes: Summary Gibberellin-like activity was detected in extracts from Enteromorpha prolifera (Chlorophyta) and Ecklonia radiata (Phaeophyta). Material eluted from chromatograms of extracts and active in dwarf maize also brought about growth responses in the species from which the extract had been made. The responses were similar to those brought about by gibberellic acid. It is concluded that gibberellins are normally involved in regulating growth in green and brown algae.

Notes: Summary The routine analysis of pesticide residue levels in biological tissue by gas-liquid chromatography is greatly facilitated by the use of computers to reduce computation time. Modern systems can be readily adapted to small computers. The nature of gas chromatographic signals permits the insertion of digitizers between the gas chromatograph and the computer. The resulting system permits completely automatic retrieval of data; thus time is saved and operating efficiency of the analytical laboratory is increased.
