Notes: Abstract We consider the class of Feller Markov chains on a phase spaceX whose kernels mapC 0 (X), the space of bounded continuous functions that vanish at infinity, into itself. We provide a necessaryand sufficient condition for the existence of an invariant probability measure using a generalized Farkas Lemma. This condition is a Lyapunov type criterion that can be checked in practice. We also provide a necessaryand sufficient condition for existence of aunique invariant probability measure. When the spaceX is compact, the conditions simplify.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers Markov chains on a locally compact separable metricspace, which have an invariant probability measure but with no otherassumption on the transition kernel. Within this context, the limit providedby several ergodic theorems is explicitly identified in terms of the limitof the expected occupation measures. We also extend Yosida’s‘ergodic’ decomposition for Feller-like kernels to arbitrarykernels, and present ergodic results for empirical occupation measures, aswell as for additive-noise systems.

Notes: Abstract We develop a general framework to analyze the convergence of linear-programming approximations for Markov control processes in metric spaces. The approximations are based on aggregation and relaxation of constraints, as well as inner approximations of the decision variables. In particular, conditions are given under which the control problem’s optimal value can be approximated by a sequence of finite-dimensional linear programs.

Notes: Abstract This paper studies the policy iteration algorithm (PIA) for average cost Markov control processes on Borel spaces. Two classes of MCPs are considered. One of them allows some restricted-growth unbounded cost functions and compact control constraint sets; the other one requires strictly unbounded costs and the control constraint sets may be non-compact. For each of these classes, the PIA yields, under suitable assumptions, the optimal (minimum) cost, an optimal stationary control policy, and a solution to the average cost optimality equation.

Notes: 2 . Dynamic parameters such as the extension of the ablation cloud, the initial velocity and momentum of the ablated particles as well as the ablation threshold, the ablated mass, and the particle size were investigated. The ablation plume was made visible with a stroboscopic technique. For a fluence of 3.1 J/cm2 the average initial velocity of the ejected particles was deduced from the extension of the plume to range from 120–400 m/s. Measurements of the recoil momentum using a sensitive pendulum led to values between 0.5 and 2.0 mm g/s. All measured properties were related to the spectroscopically determined absorption coefficient of cornea αcornea. Where absorption due to proteins is high (at λ=6.2 and 6.5 μm), ablated mass, velocity and recoil momentum behave according to αcornea. For the first time, variations of the ablation plume from pulse to pulse were observed. Those, as well as the particle size, not only depend on the absorption coefficient, but also on the predominant absorber.

Notes: Summary The urate oxidase (UO) transcription unit of Drosophila pseudoobscura was cloned, sequenced, and compared to the UO transcription unit from Drosophila melanogaster. In both species the UO coding region is divided into two exons of approximately equal size. The deduced D. pseudoobscura and D. melanogaster UO peptides have 346 and 352 amino acid residues, respectively. The nucleotide sequences of the D. pseudoobscura and D. melanogaster UO protein-coding regions are 82.2% identical whereas the deduced amino acid sequences are 87.6% identical with 42 amino acid changes, 33 of which occur in the first exon. Although the UO gene is expressed exclusively within the cells of the Malpighian tubules in both of these species, the temporal patterns of UO gene activity during development are markedly different. UO enzyme activity, UO protein, and UO mRNA are found in the third instar larva and adult of D. melanogaster but only in the adult stage of D. pseudoobscura. The intronic sequences and the extragenic 5′ and 3′ flanking regions of the D. pseudoobscura and D. melanogaster UO genes are highly divergent with the exception of eight small islands of conserved sequence along 772 by 5′ of the UO protein-coding region. These islands of conserved sequence are possible UO cis-acting regulatory elements as they reside along the 5′ flanking DNA of the D. melanogaster UO gene that is capable of conferring a wild-type D. melanogaster pattern of UO regulation on a UO-lacZ fusion gene.

Notes: Abstract The intraplate Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) straddles the African-South Atlantic continent-ocean boundary and is composed mainly of alkaline basic volcanic rocks. Voluminous silicic volcanics characterize the continental sector of the CVL. We present here new geochemical, isotopic (Sr-Nd-O) and 40Ar/39Ar geochronological data on the main silicic volcanic centres of the Western (Mt. Oku, Sabga and Mt. Bambouto) and Eastern (Ngaoundere plateau) Cameroon Highlands. The silicic volcanism of Mt. Oku, Sabga and Mt. Bambouto occurred between 25 and 15 Ma and is represented by voluminous quartz-normative trachytes and minor rhyolitic ignimbrites. At Mt. Bambouto central volcano about 700 m of silicic volcanics erupted in less than 2.7 million years. These silicic volcanics are associated with slightly to moderately alkaline basalts and minor basanites. In general, onset of the silicic volcanism migrated from NE (Oku: 25 Ma) to SW (Sabga: 23 Ma; Bambouto: 18 Ma; and Mt. Manengouba: 12 Ma). The silicic volcanism of the Ngaoundere plateau (eastern branch of the CVL) is instead dominated by nepheline-normative trachytes which are associated with strongly alkaline basalts and basanitic rocks. These Ne-trachytes are younger (11-9 Ma) than the Q-trachytes of the Western Highlands. The least differentiated silicic volcanics are isotopically similar (87Sr/86Sr 〈 0.70380; 143Nd/144Nd 〉 0.51278) to the associated alkaline basalts suggesting differentiation processes without appreciable interaction with crustal materials. Such interactions may, however, have played some role in the genesis of the most evolved silicic volcanics which have 87Sr/86Sr as high as 0.705–0.714. Fractional crystallization is the preferred mechanism for genesis of the silicic melts of both Western and Eastern Highlands, as shown by modeling major and trace element variations. The genesis of the least evolved Q-trachytes from the Western Highlands, starting from slightly to moderately alkaline basalts, is compatible with fractionation of dominantly plagioclase, clinopyroxene and magnetite. Crystal fractionation may have occurred at low pressure and at QFM buffer f O2conditions. Parental magmas of the Ngaoundere Ne-trachytes are likely instead to have been strongly alkaline basalts which evolved through crystal fractionation at higher P (6-2 kbar) and f O2 (QFM + 2). The migration (25 to 12 Ma) of the silicic volcanism from NE to SW in the continental sector of the CVL is reminiscent of that (31-5 Ma) of the onset of the basic volcanism in the oceanic sector (Principe to Pagalu islands) of the CVL. These ages, and that (11-9 Ma) of the silicic volcanism of the Ngaoundere plateau, indicate that the Cameroon Volcanic Line as a whole may not be easily interpreted as the surface expression of hot-spot magmatism.

Notes: Summary 1. Adult pallid bats possess auditory capabilities similar to those of other echolocating Vespertilionids, albeit with unusually great sensitivity to frequencies below 15 kHz. 2. Newborn bats show no behavioral or neurophysiological responses to auditory stimuli. 3. Evoked potentials were detected first in a six day old bat in response to loud, low frequency sound. Absolute sensitivity and frequency range increase rapidly in the maturing bat. By 24 days, the evoked potential audiogram resembles that of an adult. 4. Except for the first week after birth, the infant bat emits only sounds with dominant frequencies it can hear. 5. The bat's auditory responsiveness is affected by low temperatures. In the anesthetized bat, cooling will produce a shift in the tuning curve toward lower frequencies. This is accompanied by a loss of sensitivity to higher frequencies with an increase in latency and a decrease in amplitude of the response. This occurred in both adult and juvenile bats. In bats less than two weeks old, all auditory responses disappear below 28 °C. 6. The high degree of temporal resolution typical of adult Vespertilionids develops gradually in bats less than two weeks old. In young bats, 40 ms or longer are required for full recovery to the second of two identical stimuli, in contrast to 4 ms in the adult. By the time a bat flies at the age of one month, good temporal resolution has developed. 7. Collicular evoked potentials are relatively insensitive to angle of incidence of the signal, but single units show sharp directionality. This appears to develop mostly after about 3 weeks of age and suggests that binaural interaction matures relatively late in development.

Notes: Abstract Clostridum acetobutylicum strain P262 fermented glucose, pyruvate, or lactate, and the butyrate production was substrate-dependent. Differences in butyrate yield could not be explained by changes in butyrate kinase activities, but the butyrate production was inversely related to acetate kinase activity. The acetate kinase had a pH optimum of 8.0, a K m for acetate of 160 mM, and a k cat of 16,800 min–1. The enyzme had a native molecular mass of 78 kDa; the size of 42 kDa on SDS-PAGE indicated that the acetate kinase of strain P262 was a homodimer.
