Abstract The temperature dependence of photoexcited carrier relaxation in insulating and metallic YBa2Cu3O7-δ and La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 suggests that carriers relax towards equilibrium by hopping between localized states. The implication is that in the optimally doped superconducting phase, localized states and extended states co-exist. The findings confirm the polaronic interpretation of the MIR band in the optical conductivity.
