Notes: Summary Chlorpromazine (CPZ) hydrochloride when reacted witho-iodosobenzoic acid in aqueous solution is oxidised to chlorpromazine free radical (CPZ·) which has an absorption maximum at 530 nm. In the presence of 20% phosphoric acid the free radical is stable and has a molar extinction coefficient of 9.7×103. The red CPZ· is readily reduced quantitatively by thiosulphate, ferrous ion, ascorbic acid, and the reduced form of the coenzymes nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP) to the colourless CPZ under the conditions described. The addition of these reducing substances to a red solution of CPZ· results in a decrease in absorbance in direct proportion to the quantity of the reducing compounds present. This forms the basis for the quantitative estimation of micro-quantities of reducing substances.

Notes: Summary Chlorpromazine (CPZ) hydrochloride in the presence of 20% (w/v) o-phosphoric acid is oxidised by o-iodosobenzoic acid to a stable free radical CPZ· which has an absorption maximum at 530 nm. The red coloured free radical is readily reduced to the colourless CPZ by NADH and NADPH. The reduction causes a decrease in absorbance in direct proportion to the quantity of the reduced coenzymes present. This reaction forms the basis for a general colorimetric method for the assay of NAD+- or NADP+-linked oxidoreductases. Details of the assay methods including normal values for lactic,α-hydroxybutyric, isocitric, sorbitol, glucose-6-phosphate, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases in serum and erythrocytes are given.

Notes: Abstract The failure mechanisms of several epoxy polymers (including pure, rubber- and particulatemodified, as well as rubber/particulate hybrid epoxies) were investigated over a wide range of strain rates (10−6 to 102 sec−1) and temperatures (−80 to 60° C). A substantial variation in fracture toughness, GIc, with rate was observed at both very high and very low strain rates. Under impact testing conditions, GIc for both pure and rubber-modified epoxies displayed peaks at about 23 and −80° C which appeared to correlate with the corresponding size of the crack tip plastic zone. In order to explain these rate and temperature-dependent GIc results, two separate crack blunting mechanisms were proposed: thermal blunting due to crack tip adiabatic heating and plastic blunting associated with shear yield/flow processes. Thermal blunting was found to occur in the pure- and rubber-modified epoxies under all impact testing conditions and temperatures above 0° C. For temperatures below −20° C under impact conditions, the fracture toughness is dependent on viscoelastic loss processes and not thermal blunting. Plastic blunting was predominant at very slow strain rates less than 10−2 sec−1 for the pure- and rubber-modified epoxies and at impact strain rates for the fibre and hybrid epoxies. Microstructural studies of fracture surfaces provided some essential support for the two proposed crack blunting mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract This study investigates the relationship between returns on Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and anticipated inflation. It was motivated by the contradictory findings in the literature concerning the inflation-hedging characteristics of financial and real assets. We employ the methodology developed by Fama and Schwert, which represents a generalization of the Fisher equation. Two different measures of anticipated inflation were used to estimate the regression equations. The results show that REITs generally tend to behave like equities with respect to their hedging characteristics, regardless of how inflation expectations are measured. When we used a survey measure of anticipated inflation, however, we found some evidence that REITs are partial hedges against anticipated inflation.

Notes: Abstract A method of studing of double scaling limits for the two-dimensional string models of quantum gravity is stated. It is actually shown that the study of such limits reduces to the isomonodromic deformation method for integrable discrete equations. A relationship is indicated between the “universality” and isomonodromy properties of the model. It is shown that the partition function of the model is the τ-function associated with the fourth Painlevé equation (ℙ4), and also the Volterra chain. We consider in detail the properties of the Bäcklund transformations for ℙ4. Bibliography: 19 titles.

Notes: Abstract We study the double scaling limits of the Hermitian matrix model Ф6 to the first Painlevé equation (ℙ1) and the next “higher” equation ℙ 1 2 of the ℙ1 hierarchy. In the first case we show how to modify the initial condition to obtain the limit required, and in the second case we prove that the required limit exists. Bibliography: 9 titles.
