Notes: Abstract High quality single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) have been grown in yttria-stabilized zirconia crucibles by using a flux method. This method yields crystals with area 3 to 4 times larger than a previous method, and 3 to 5 times more crystals. Several crystals as large as 3×4mm2 in thea-b plane are routinely obtained from each crucible. The samples typically range from 10 to 60 μm thick. The superconductivity transition temperatureT c of the crystals, measured by magnetic susceptibility, falls in the range 92.5 to 93 K and the smallest transition width (10 to 90%) is less than 0.25 K. Compared with the previous method, the surface is generally smoother, with less flux, and larger untwinned regions of 1 x 1 mm2 are usually found.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the effects of doping a Chevrel compound by investigating W x Sn1−x Mo6S8, wherex=0.00-0.20. An unusual peak in the dependence of the superconducting transition temperatureT c on the dopant concentration levelx has been observed. We explain the dependence ofT c onx in terms of the dependence of the electron density of states at the Fermi energy on the charge transferred from the tungsten atom to the Mo6S8 clusters.

Notes: Abstract The anisotropy of the upper critical field,H c2, was measured on deoxygenated single crystals of the Chevrel phase compound PbMo6S8. The superconducting transition temperature,T c, was determined with the applied field pointing in various directions in the hexagonal $$(2\overline 1 0)$$ plane. At a fixed value of the external field,T c is an oscillating function of direction. Since theH c2 versusT curve is linear in the field region we probed, the shape of the anisotropy inT c at constantH is the same as the anisotropy ofH c2 at constantT. The data reflect the low-temperature symmetry of the crystal structure. Two-fold symmetry was observed in the $$(2\overline 1 0)$$ plane. The data were fitted to the effective mass model with uniaxial symmetry. The anisotropy ofH c2 is more complex than that previously observed by us in Cu1.8Mo6S8. We relate this observation to the structural differences of these compounds.

Notes: Abstract A method is reported for producing an orthorhombic YBa2Cu3O7−x single crystal comprised entirely of a single untwinned domain. The transformation from a polydomain to a single domain single crystal is carried out by applying uniaxial pressure of approximately 25 MPa for about one minute at 450°C in an oxygen atmosphere. We report on some of the superconducting properties of crystals produced in this way.

Notes: Abstract A refined method for preventing the incorporation of oxygen into Chevrel compounds is presented. This method has been used in producing Cu1.8Mo6S8, SnMo6S8, and PbMo6S8. The removal of oxygen enhances the magnetic susceptibility of these materials as well as raising their superconducting transition temperatures. The curves of magnetic susceptibility versus temperature show structures that may indicate lattice deformations.

Notes: Abstract The Chevrel compounds Cu1.8Mo6S8−x O x have been studied, wherex=0.00, 0.05, and 0.10. In order to establish the effects of incorporating a small amount of oxygen into Cu1.8Mo6S8, we have measured lattice parameters, superconducting transition temperatureT c, and the temperature dependence of both the upper critical fieldH c2 and the magnetic susceptibility x. We show that the usual method of making this compound incorporates oxygen, and that this impurity may be removed by gettering the material with Y2S3. We observe that the substitution of oxygen for sulfur in Cu1.8Mo6S8 increasesT c and decreases the ratioc/a of the hexagonal lattice constants and x. A breakdown in the rigid-band approximation is indicated by a comparison of the relative signs of the effect onT c and that on x. In addition to these observations, we report on a correlation between hardness andT c of Cu1.8Mo6S8 and on the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of Cu3.2Mo6S8.

Notes: Abstract PbMo6S8 and SnMo6S8 have low-lying phonon modes involving mainly motion of the Pb or Sn cation. It has long been believed that these cation modes are highly anharmonic. By examining the inelastic neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction, and magnetic susceptibility data in the literature, however, it is shown that these modes are nearly harmonic at room temperature. There is no evidence that they are anharmonic at low temperature. From the observed frequency of the cation modes at room temperature, the delocalization of the cation perpendicular to the trigonal axis is calculated. The calculated delocalization agrees well with that indicated by the x-ray diffraction data.

Notes: Abstract We have made samples of La1.85Ba0.15CuO4−y with varying heat treatments. We have measured their dc magnetization and electron paramagnetic resonance, and have examined them by electron microscopy and electron diffraction. For samples annealed only a few hours, cooling the material below 5 K causes a magnetic transition and a thermal hysteresis. These observations, taken with the EPR data, suggest a possible spin-glass or ferromagnetic phase. Annealing samples in an oxygen atmosphere appears to remove that magnetic phase. For the phase with the K2NiF4 structure, no superlattice spots are seen in electron diffraction at room temperature or at 77 K.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution angle-integrated photoemission measurements were made on a sample of the compound Y1Ba2Cu3O6+x, for which it was shown that the onset of superconductivity was as high as 93 K. The density of states associated with the Cu 3d levels appears in an intense band about 4 eV wide beginning about 1.5 eV below the Fermi level. A small wing of this band extends up to the Fermi level, where the density of states is relatively low. These results are in good agreement with the projected density of states of Cu as obtained in recent calculations.

Notes: Abstract A method for growing millimeter-sized crystals of YBa2Cu3O7−δ is described. Processing conditions were developed to improve the superconducting transition temperature and sharpness, as observed by measurements of the dc magnetic susceptibility. Some of our crystals have been used in observations of the Raman Effect, specific heat, nuclear magnetic resonance, and nuclear quadrupole resonance, with results indicating that the samples are excellent.
