Notes: Abstract Previous applications of the Flory–Patterson theory in the analysis of the excess molar enthalpies at 25°C for some binary mixtures composed of ethers, n-alkanes, br-alknes, and cycloalkanes are reviewed. The possibility of correlating the Flory interaction parameters X ij in terms of the acentric factors of the components is examined. For selected ether (1) + n-alkane(2) mixtures, a set of linear relations between X 12 and the acentric factors of the n-alkanes are reported.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of excess molar enthalpies at 25°C in a flow microcalorimeter, are reported for the two ternary mixtures 2,2-dimethylbutane + cyclohexane +n-octane and 2,2-dimethylbutane + cyclohexane + n-dodecane. Smoothrepresentations of the results are described and used to construct constant enthalpy contourson Roozeboom diagrams. It is shown that useful estimates of the ternary enthalpiescan be obtained from the Flory theory using only the physical properties of thecomponents and their binary mixtures.

Notes: Abstract Aldehyde components of lepidopterous pheromones are converted to carboxylic acids by aldehyde oxidizing enzymes (AOEs) that are present at high levels in antennal tissues of adult moths. The AOEs may include O2-requiring aldehyde oxidases as well as nucleotide-cofactor-requiring aldehyde dehydrogenases. Three classes of inhibitors were synthesized and examined in vitro for AOE inhibition usingHeliothis virescens antennae: (1) cyclopropanols, (2) α-fluorinated aldehydes, and (3) α,β-unsaturated carbonyls. First, cyclopropanated analogs of (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11–16∶A1), a common unsaturated aldehyde component of many species' pheromone blends, were synthesized as isosteric pheromone analogs and as potential inhibitors of the moth AOEs. NMR assignments are reported for thecis- andtrans-cyclopropanols. Cyclopropanols appear to act as oxidase-activated AOE inhibitors, perhaps via the unstable cyclopropanones. Second, α-fluoro and α,α-difluoro substituted analogs ofZ9–14∶A1 were synthesized and shown to be modest inhibitors of both the alcohol oxidase and AOE activities. Finally, the most potent inhibitors were α,β-unsaturated carbonyl mimics of theZ11–16∶A1. The α-methylene aldehyde was 1000-fold less effective than the vinyl ketoneZ1,11–16∶3-oxo. This inhibition appears irreversible and is postulated to involve electrophilic modification of an active site sulfur nucleophile.

Notes: Abstract. The localisation of the neurokinin 3 receptor (NK3r) in the rat gastrointestinal tract has been studied by using a polyclonal antiserum against the C-terminal portion (amino acids 388–452) of the rat NK3r. In the oesophagus, immunoreactivity for the NK3r was found on smooth muscle cells of the muscularis mucosae. NK3r immunoreactivity was not present on muscle cells of other regions. Nerve cell bodies immunoreactive for NK3r were seen in the myenteric and submucous plexuses of the small and large intestine, but not in the stomach or oesophagus. Immunoreactivity was largely confined to nerve cell surfaces. The reaction product was on the cell soma and initial parts of axons. Reactivity was not seen on nerve terminals. Immunoreactive nerve cells had Dogiel Type II morphology. Patterns of co-localisation of NK3r and immunoreactivity for other markers were examined in the ileum, to provide a basis from which to deduce the functional identity of NK3r-immunoreactive nerve cells. Most of the NK3r-immunoreactive nerve cells were also immunoreactive for the calcium-binding proteins, calretinin and calbindin, and all were immunoreactive for the NK1 receptor (NK1r). Nerve cells that were immunoreactive for nitric oxide synthase were not immunoreactive for either NK3r or NK1r. The projections of the calbindin and calretinin neurons were determined by nerve lesion studies. Their morphology, projections to the mucosa and other ganglia and immunoreactivity for the calcium-binding proteins suggest that the NK3r-immunoreactive neurons are intrinsic sensory neurons.

Notes: Abstract A new method based on the multiple beam procedure to obtain ultrasonic angle independent Doppler color (AIDC) images using Doppler color imaging with a sector transducer has been developed. The transducer was sequentially placed at three locations with different direction orientations to acquire velocity information for the same flow field. Equations have been derived and used to obtain the velocity amplitude and flow direction angle for each point in the flow field from the acquired velocity data and the known positions of the transducer. AIDC images then can be reconstructed. To evaluate the feasibility of this method, AIDC images using a sector transducer have been reconstructed for steady flow fields in a latex tube model and for blood flow in the abdominal aorta of normal human subjects. The quantitative results obtained using this method were in reasonably good agreement with those obtained from existing reference methods. © 1999 Biomedical Engineering Society. Notes: Abstract The calculation for the masses of elementary particles is based on the ten dimensional superstring. A Kaluza--Klein substructure is proposed for the six extra spatial dimensions in the ten-dimensional superstring. The periodic table of elementary particles can be constructed from the Kaluza--Klein substructure. All leptons, quarks, and gauge bosons can be placed in the periodic table. The masses of elementary particles can be generated using only four known constants: the number of the extra spatial dimensions in the ten-dimensional superstring, the mass of the electron, the mass of Z0, and αe. The calculated masses derived from the periodic table are in good agreement with the observed values. The calculated mass (176.6 GeV) of the top quark is in excellent agreement with the observed mass (176 GeV). The periodic table also provides an explanation for why the cross section for jet transverse energy, 〉200 GeV, is greater than the perturbative QCD prediction. The periodic table based on the ten-dimensional superstring provides the most comprehensive explanation and calculation for the properties and the masses of all elementary particles.

Notes: Abstract All leptons, quarks, and gauge bosons can be placed in the periodic table of elementary particles based on the supermembrane. As a molecule is the composite of atoms with chemical bonds, a hadron is the composite of elementary particles with hadronic bonds. The masses of hadrons can be calculated using the periodic table of elementary particles. The masses of 110 hadrons are calculated. The calculated masses are in good agreement with the observed values. For example, the calculated masses for neutron and pion are 939.54 and 135.01 MeV in excellent agreement with the observed masses, 939.57 and 134.98 MeV, respectively. The overall average difference between the calculated masses and the observed masses for all hadrons is 0.29 MeV, and the standard deviation for such differences is 5.06 MeV. The average observed error for the masses of the hadrons is ±6.41 MeV. The periodic table of elementary particles provides the most comprehensive calculation for the masses of hadrons.

Notes: Abstract Unsaturated aliphatic pheromones ofH. virescens were prepared at high specific activity (3H, 58 Ci/mmol) and were employed to study tissue specificity of acetate esterase, alcohol oxidase, and aldehyde dehydrogenase in male and femaleHeliothis virescens. Thus, [9,10-3H2]Z9-14:Ac was synthesized by partial tritiation of the corresponding alkyne and was converted to the labeledZ9-14∶OH andZ9-14∶Al for metabolic studies. Soluble and membrane-associated enzyme activities were determined by radio-TLC assays. Esterase activity is highest in legs of both sexes, but also occurs in antennal and glandular tissues. Oxidase activity requires O2 and is highest in female pheromone gland tissues, but it is also high in the male hairpencils. Aldehyde dehydrogenase activity was uniformly high in all tissues, but highest in antennal tissues of both males and females.
