Notes: Abstract Batch cultures of Clostridium acetobutylicum, were examined with 0, 0.1 and 1 mM methyl viologen addition at four different controlled pH values (between 4.5 and 6.5). Methyl viologen addition diverted the electron flow: reducing equivalents normally released as molecular hydrogen were directed towards NAD(P)H formation. Production of butanol, the most reduced non-gaseous product, was sharply increased (0.65 mol/mol glucose) at the expense of acetone and butyric and acetic acids. In addition to butanol and lactate production, NADH excess induced the formation of glycerol, a product that has never been reported to be formed by C. acetobutylicum. Metabolic perturbation brought about by the electron carrier led to a reduction of the growth rate and an increase of the lag phase. A correlation between the shape of the redox potential curve and the switch from an acidogenic to a solventogenic metabolism is reported.

Notes: Summary The aim of the present investigation was to look for the mechanisms causing disturbances in carbohydrate metabolism during the action of the epileptogenic agent methionine sulfoximine The levels of glucose, glycogen, and indolamines were measured in seven different regions of rat brain. Methionine sulfoximine induced a decrease in serotonin level which was roughly dose-dependent. There were no obvious, changes in tryptophan and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic levels in any area. Methionine sulfoximine induced the known increase in glucose and glycogen levels. The direct precursor of serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophan, and benserazide (a decarboxylase inhibitor) were then injected into rats in association with methionine sulfoximine. In this case, methionine sulfoximine failed to induce seizures. Moreover, the serotonin level was unchanged and the carbohydrate content did not significantly increase. There was only a rise in 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid level. This work shows a striking parallelism between serotonin decrease and glycogen increase.

Notes: Summary During the embryonic development of the chick, the endothelial cells of the vascular sprouts and of the newly-formed capillaries in the telencephalon are linked by transitory junctions at the level of which the external leaflets of the plasma membrane are not fused and are separated by a measurable intercellular space. Some points of fusion of these external leaflets gradually appear at random in the area of the intercellular contact. Between these points of fusion, some intercellular spaces persist which still allow the communication between the capillary lumen and the extracellular space in the nervous tissue. The adjunction of new points of fusion between the preexisting ones, leads progressively to the disappearance of these intercellular spaces and to the formation of true zonulae occludentes.

Notes: Summary An electron microscopical study was made of the structure of the capillaries and of the surrounding cell formations in the chick telencephalon, during embryonic development and postnatal growth. The capillary endothelium is present in the embryonic stage first studied (i. e. the 8-day old embryo). The basement membrane differentiates about the nineteenth day of embryonic development, and it is preceded by the appearance of the pericytes which are finally included in its structure. The extracellular space in the vicinity of the capillaries, made of large gaps during the embryonic development, is confined from hatching time to intervals 150–200 Å diameter. The astrocytes and their processes (vascular feet) reach their complete development, and entirely surround the capillaries, on about the twentieth day of the postnatal growth. Our observations reveal the close connection between the development of the pericapillary glial structures and the appearance of some mechanisms of the blood-brain barrier system in the chick.
