Notes: Summary The purpose of the present study was to investigate the mechanism of action on bone of Benzo(B)Thiophene-2-Carboxylic Acid (BL-5583). BL-5583, at a dose range of 0.01–100 µg/ml, inhibited spontaneous as well as A23187 and PTH-induced bone resorption in tissue culture. This compound also decreased calcium uptake in both osteoclastic and osteoblastic enriched bone cell populations obtained by sequential collagenase digestion of 1–2 day newborn rat calvariae. The decrease occurred after a 5 min. incubation with45Ca and BL-5583. The effective dose range was 0.01–100 µg/ml. No effect on leucine incorporation or lactic acid production by bone cells was observed. BL-5583 also induced a transient decrease in calcium uptake in skin cells isolated from fetal rats by collagenase digestion, suggesting a lack of tissue specificity for this compound. No effect on cyclic AMP in isolated bone cells was observed with the same dose range that produced a calcium effect.

Notes: Summary: Nest relocation in ants may be an attempt to escape areas of high competition. Encounters between colonies have been suggested to be the proximate cause of nest relocation. I examined the relation between nest relocation and encounters in a population of the seed-harvesting ant Messor andrei, a native of the western United States. Over 80% of colonies relocated their nest site during a year. Colonies moved up to ten times in a year, and new nest-sites were more distant from their nearest neighbour. However, encounters did not precipitate nest relocation. Relocation was not more likely to occur directly after an encounter, and colonies that moved did not experience more encounters than other colonies. Other possible cues for nest relocation, including predation, disease, microclimatic effects, and local resource depletion, are discussed.

Notes: Summary: Claustral founding is the common mode of colony foundation in ant species outside the Ponerinae. I report the existence of both semi-claustral founding and worker-type behaviour in new gynes of the myrmicine ant Messor andrei. Worker-type behaviour may be a non-adaptive corollary of semi-claustral colony founding, and represents little cost to colony reproduction. In contrast, semi-claustral founding is a high risk activity; numerous attacks on foraging queens were observed. Why non-ponerine ants exhibit semi-claustral founding behaviour remains unknown, and deserves further study.

Notes: Summary Four cases of C.G.L. in which banding of the Ph1 chromosome was performed were found to have variation from the usual 9/22 translocation pattern. All 4 cases showed a rearrangement involving at least 3 chromosomes, 2 of which were a 9 and a 22. One of these cases had in addition an XYY karyotype in the bone marrow.

Notes: Summary The time courses of the changes in plasma growth hormone and noradrenaline concentrations in response to 15 min infusions of clonidine 0.2 mgs and guanfacine 2 mgs, were studied in six normal volunteers, in a double-blind, randomised, crossover study. Plasma noradrenaline fell within 15 min of the commencement of drug administration, by 36±14% after clonidine (p〈0.05) and by 32±11% (p〈0.05) after guanfacine. Plasma growth hormone was not significantly elevated until the 30th minute to 12.0±4.7 lU/ml (p〈0.05) after clonidine and 14.7±11.5 lU/ml (p〈0.05) after guanfacine, having been undetectable prior to both drugs. The reduction in plasma noradrenaline by these α2-adrenergic agonists, prior to activation of central adrenoceptors as detected by changes in plasma growth hormone, is evidence for a peripheral component in their sympatholytic effect.

Notes: Summary To determine whether inhibition of sympathetic activity is a factor in calcium antagonist induced hypotension, plasma noradrenaline was measured after intravenous infusion of hydralazine (25 mg) and the calcium antagonist nifedipine (4 mg) in 6 hypertensive males. The resultant reduction in mean blood pressure (12.4% and 14.2% respectively) was accompanied by similar increases in heart rate and plasma noradrenaline concentration. These results suggest that calcium slow channel blockade does not inhibit noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerves and that nifedipine induced hypotension is independent of such a mechanism.

Notes: Summary Observations and studies were conducted on the origin and destination of sediment in irrigation water, and the effects of sediment adsorbed on the wetted perimeter of furrows on water intake and erosion. Fine sediment adsorbed on the perimeter reduced intake and increased soil water tension which was the primary mechanism holding the sediment on the perimeter. This self enhancing effect causes this thin seal to decrease erosion and intake rates. In contrast, removal of a few square centimeters of this seal by chance events after water velocities and shear forces have increased often causes reduced tensions, exfoliation of the surface seal and erosion pits which develop into head cuts.
