Notes: Abstract A brief summary of some recent research on the Hubble Deep Field is presented. Particular attention is paid to the incidence of strong gravitational lensing and it is argued that the optical depth is nearly ten times smaller than average. Preliminary estimates of the incidence of galaxy-galaxy lensing are consistent with the presence of a large population of faint galaxies at large redshift. An estimate of the galaxy luminosity function is consistent with the local version undergoing passive evolution out to z ∼ 1. The OII luminosity function shows more rapid evolution to this redshift.

Notes: Abstract There is now little doubt that the nuclei of most galaxies contain massive black holes with 106M⊙〈 M 〈 1010M⊙and that these are ultimately responsible for most nuclear activity when they are supplied with gas. Parallel observations of Galactic X-ray sources are providing small scale counterparts that have similar properties except that they vary far more rapidly. As we can now determine the masses of these black holes in several instances, we can ask much more quantitative questions about the mode of accretion and the origin and collimation of outflows. In this contribution, I will emphasize the importance of magnetic field for extracting the angular momentum from the flow and explain how the radiative efficiency is controlled by the mass accretion rate and the actual properties of magnetized, plasma.

Notes: Abstract Induced Compton scattering by independent relativistic particles in a radiation field is considered from both quantum mechanical and classical viewpoints. Quantum mechanically, the particle recoil causes an imperfect cancellation of the induced scattering rates between pairs of photon states. This results in a net energy transfer from the radiation field to the particle. Classically, the electrodynamical effects are manifestations of non-linear coupling between different wave amplitudes in the equation of motion. The results from these two approaches are related and shown to be equivalent.
