Notes: Abstract U, B, V photometry of the eclipsing binary DX Aqr has been presented for the first time. The period of the system comes out to be nearly half the period given by Strohmeier (1966) and a value of Od.472502 has been determined. The colour of the system has been discussed. The primary eclipse is a total occulation. The orbit seems to be eccentric. The system belongs to Algol type. DX Aqr may be a very complicated system. The present results are considerably different from those of earlier investigations.

Notes: Abstract The problem of estimating the common mean μ of k independent and univariate inverse Gaussian populations IG(μ, λ i ), i=1,..., k with unknown and unequal λ's is considered. The difficulty with the maximum likelihood estimator of μ is pointed out, and a natural estimator % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafeart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXafv3ySLgzGmvETj2BSbqefm0B1jxALjhiov2D% aebbfv3ySLgzGueE0jxyaibaiiYdd9qrFfea0dXdf9vqai-hEir8Ve% ea0de9qq-hbrpepeea0db9q8as0-LqLs-Jirpepeea0-as0Fb9pgea% 0lrP0xe9Fve9Fve9qapdbaqaaeGacaGaaiaabeqaamaabaabcaGcba% acciGaf8hVd0MbaGaaaaa!3D38!\[\tilde \mu \] of μ along the lines of Graybill and Deal is proposed. Notes: Abstract Experiments on the reaction:3He+3He→4He+2He using a single four detector telescope have shown evidence for the production of deuteron pulses, consistent with the2He→2H+e++v fusion reaction in the final state. New measurements on the same reaction using improved techniques viz.A) a windowless3He gas target andB) α- d correlation detection with 5 ns resolving time and antipileup circuitry have been performed. Calibrations were obtained from the7Li+3He→2H+4He+4He reaction spectra. The correlation angles were 30° and 97° for the alphas and deuterons respectively. Deuteron pulses have been observed, correlated with alpha particles. A cross section of (1.7 ±0.5)nbsr−1MeV−1 was obtained consistent with previous measurements using a single telescope.

Notes: Abstract Spectrum scans of the head of Comet Bradfield (1980t) covering the wavelength range λλ365–640 nm were made on two nights when the heliocentric distance of the comet varied from 0.55 to 0.58 AU. The emission features of the CN band at λ388 nm and Swan band sequence of C2 at λ474 nm, λ516 nm, and λ563 nm are identified and absolute fluxes in these bands as well as in the continuum are derived. The continuum energy distribution curves of the comet have been compared with those of the Sun and the star β Crv (G5 III). An estimate of the number of C2 and CN molecules in the head of the comet has been made through the measured intensities of their respective bands lying in this region.

Notes: Summary Films of cobalt and nickel were electroplated in the presence of an external magnetic-induction field. This resulted in the deposition of magnetic films which show, in addition to a magnetic anisotropy, also thermo-e.m.f. anisotropy. The latter is a new effect, not deriving from the anisotropy in electrical conduction deduced earlier by Kornevet al. on the basis of measurements of transmission coefficients of polarized RF field.

Notes: Summary Oral administration of meptazinol (200 mg Meptid®) to male and female geriatric patients (〉70 years) resulted in rapid absorption, with peak drug concentrations at 0.5 to 3 h after dosage. Subsequent elimination also proceeded rapidly with a half-life of 3.39 h (±0.26 SEM) after a single dose and 4.97 h (±0.80 SEM) after 13 consecutive 6-h doses. These values were not statistically different. There was no accumulation of meptazinol above that expected from the single-dose kinetics. Plasma protein binding of meptazinol was 33.8% (±0.74 SEM). No sex difference was apparent in any of the pharmacokinetic parameters determined. Comparison of these results with those obtained in an earlier study in young volunteers showed that although the half-life of meptazinol was somewhat longer than the value of 2 h seen in the young, peak plasma concentrations after single and multiple dosing were similar for both age groups, implying that clearance remained largely unaltered. It was concluded that there was no pharmacokinetic basis for recommending a reduction in dosage when treating elderly patients with oral meptazinol.

Notes: Summary Studies on the genetics of leaf blight caused byAlternaria triticina using generation mean analysis revealed that additive components played a major role, but that dominance components also contributed significantly in controlling the variability for leaf blight resistance in wheat crosses. Furthermore, the additive x additive type of epistasis was predominant in the first three crosses, whereas in the fourth cross additive x dominance (j) and dominance x dominance (1) components of epistasis were most significant. Because of this it may be desirable to follow a simple recurrent selection scheme for higher tolerance, to isolate resistant plants from the segregating populations derived from crosses of parents of diverse origin following the pedigree method of breeding. CPAN-1887 was very tolerant to leaf blight in the present study and should be utilized in hybridization programs to develop leaf-blight-resistant varieties.

Notes: Summary Root uptake rate and root uptake coefficient for Cl ions were determined in corn at two transpiration rates and three solution concentrations. Transpiration rate had pronounced effect on root uptake rate and root uptake coefficient especially at low solution concentration. Root uptake rate increased as the concentration of Cl ions in the solution increased. The root uptake coefficient decreased as Cl concentration in the solution increased from 20 meq/l to 40 meq/l but it did not change when the concentration was raised to 80 meq/l.

Notes: Summary Magnitude of Na and Cl accumulation around wheat roots was studied under different transpiration conditions in a loamy sand soil salinized with sodium chloride to an electrical conductivity of 4.1 mmho/cm in the saturation extract. A significant correlation was observed between rate of water loss per unit root length and Na and Cl content of the soil closely adhering to the roots. Under high transpiration condition, maximum ion accumulation occurred in the apparent free space of roots followed by the soil closely adhering to the roots. Results indicate that salt concentration at the root surface is markedly altered under the influence of transpiration rate such that under high transpiration conditions, the plant roots may be exposed to a much higher salt concentration than that anticipated from an analysis of the bulk soil samples.
