Notes: Abstract: A structural study has been performed on the La0.8Sr0.2FexCo1-xO3 (x = 0.025 to 0.3) system displaying large magnetoresistance (MR) at room temperature. A detailed analysis of the crystal structure and microstructure was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). The atomic resolution TEM images and the appearing superreflections in the corresponding SAED patterns revealed that a superstructure is formed due to the presence of iron. The correlation between the ordered microstructure and the observed large MR ratio is discussed. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy was utilized to gain information on the valence state of iron in the sample with x = 0.3. The lattice parameters of Fe- doped La0.8Sr0.2FexCo1-xO3 compounds were found to increase monotonously with increasing Fe content. The valence state of iron was found to be Fe3+.

Notes: Abstract In this paper I argue against the view, defended by some philosophers, that it is part of the meaning of “mental” that being mental is incompatible with being physical. I call this outlook metalinguistic dualism (MLD for short), and I distinguish it from metaphysical theories of the mind-body relation such as Cartesian dualism. I argue that MLD is mistaken, but I don't try to defend the contrary view that mentalistic terms can be definitionally reduced to nonmental ones. After criticizing arguments by certain philosophers which purport to establish MLD, I formulate a criterion for a phenomenon's being mental. I then show that this criterion is neutral between monistic and dualistic theories of the mind-body relation. Since if MLD were true it should be impossible to construct such a criterion, I conclude that it is false (i.e., if it is intended as a descriptive thesis about our language). The significance of my paper is that if I am right then I remove one important type of objection to aposteriori, noneliminative forms of the identity theory of mind, namely that such theories ought to be rejected merely on the basis of semantical considerations about the word “mental”. Beyond that, I believe that my criterion of mental phenomena correctly captures our intuitions about the nature of the distinction between mental and nonmental phenomena.

Notes: Abstract In rapidly solidified eutectic Nb-Al alloys a change in morphology from a lamellar microstructure to a globular anomalous eutectic one has been observed. This behavior results from the decomposition of an intermediate metastable tetragonal σ*-Nb2Al phase. By means of TEM, electron diffraction and EDXS this metastable phase was characterized and the solidification behavior via different transition steps of the metastable σ*-Nb2Al was elucidated.

Notes: Abstract. The preferred positions for meiotic double-strand breakage were mapped on Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosomes I and VI, and on a number of yeast artificial chromosomes carrying human DNA inserts. Each chromosome had strong and weak double-strand break (DSB) sites. On average one DSB-prone region was detected by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis per 25 kb of DNA, but each chromosome had a unique distribution of DSB sites. There were no preferred meiotic DSB sites near the telomeres. DSB-prone regions were associated with all of the known ”hot spots” for meiotic recombination on chromosomes I, III and VI.

Notes: Abstract. Reciprocal recombination (chiasma formation) between homologs appears to be essential for promoting chromosome segregation at the first meiotic division. However, chiasmata that form near the ends of chromosomes are much less efficient at promoting segregation. To determine the frequency of reciprocal recombination near the end of a chromosome, genetic markers were inserted at ~7 kb intervals within the leftmost 30 kb of chromosome I from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Analysis of recombination between the markers indicated that meiotic reciprocal recombination rates were much lower than on the rest of the chromosome and that rates increased with distance from the telomere. Thus, S. cerevisiae has evolved a mechanism that minimizes the occurrence of chiasmata that cannot promote meiotic segregation. Low rates of recombination were independent of the SIR2 and SIR3 gene products, suggesting that any mechanism for suppressing recombination was different from transcriptional repression due to a telomere position effect.

Notes: Summary In this paper a model is presented which deals with the determination of test statistics, minimizing the “average avoidable loss” in a decision about the difference between A and B. Here the three following decisions should be possible: 1. A is better than B. 2. B is better than A. 3. There is no “essential” difference between A and B. This leads to the conception of the regret function, whose parameters must be chosen in a way that the supremum of the regret function will attain its minimum.

Notes: Summary This paper introduces a modification of the model, concerning statistical quality control, already presented in 1969 by W. Uhlmann; it refers to a producer warranting for the maximum fraction defective. When the lot is rejected by the consumer, the producer will effect a total examination. If the fraction defective is not greater than the warranted maximum, the consumer will have to pay the total examination, in the other case the cost for the total examination will be paid by the producer. Concerning this modification test statistics are to be found by the minimax principle applied to the regret functions. In the last chapter the presented solution is generalized to a wider class of non-linear loss functions.

Notes: Summary In order to compare two-stage sampling plans we use the minimax regret principle i.e. the minimax principle applied to the corresponding regret functions. In this paper approximation formulas for optimum two-stage sampling plans are derived in the case of sampling by attributes as well as in the case of sampling by variables; furthermore a method is presented how to improve the approximate solution in the first case.

Notes: Summary In order to compare two sampling plans we use the minimax regret principle, i.e. the minimax principle applied to regret functions. It is shown that among all two-stage sampling plans there exists an optimum sampling plan which can be computed with the aid of a procedure presented in this paper; furthermore another procedure is described how to obtain an approximately optimum two-stage sampling plan in a more direct way. Finally only those two-stage sampling plans are regarded which satisfy an additional condition; among these sampling plans an optimum one exists and is to be determined, too.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between characteristics of benzodiazepine exposure and health‐status was examined in order to investigate risk profiles of benzodiazepine users. In the only pharmacy of a Dutch community of 13,500 inhabitants, all current benzodiazepine users that presented with a benzodiazepine prescription in November 1994 were invited to participate. On the basis of the RAND‐36 questionnaire, summary scores for both physical and mental health were calculated, the Physical Component Summary (PCS) and the Mental Component Summary (MCS). After dichotomization with a cut‐off point indicating seriously impaired health and after the combination of the PCS and MCS, four different categories of health status could be identified. We used logistic regression to study the relation between these four different groups with respect to benzodiazepine exposure. In total a group of 360 current benzodiazepine users was studied. Results showed that almost one‐third of the participants had no significant impaired health; this group was further classified as reference group. We classified three other groups: one with physical problems (31%), one with mental problems (18%), and one with a combination of the two (22%). Multivariate analysis showed differences in risk factors for an impaired health status. The group with impaired physical health was associated with self‐reported indication for muscle relaxation, hypnotic use, and a high CDS (Chronic Disease Score). The group with impaired mental health was associated with more frequent consulting of a mental health care specialist and with a low sense of self‐efficacy. The group with both impaired physical as well as mental health was associated with a higher incidence of widowhood, a lower sense of self‐efficacy, a high CDS, using benzodiazepines more than prescribed, and reporting depression as reason for their benzodiazepine use.In particular, two groups need critical examination: a group of apparently healthy users with long‐term benzodiazepine use; and a frail group with impaired physical and mental health and using a higher dose than prescribed. Patient counseling and management of these four groups can be tailored to the specific needs of each group.
