Notizen: Abstract Studies on C-C bond formation between simple hydrocarbon species such as CH2, C=CH2, CH=CH2, CH2=CH2, CH2=C=CH2 and CH≡CH at a diruthenium center suggest that the process is promoted when the dimetal center can readily compensate for the two electrons “lost” in the formation of the new C-C bond. Thus, whereas μ-CH2 and ethene combine only under forcing conditions, the combination of μ-CH2 with allene or ethyne, which have additional π-electrons available for coordination, occurs readily at room temperature. Likewise, the availability of uncoordinated π-electrons in μ-C=CH2 allows vinylidene to link rapidly with ethene at room temperature. Alkyne complexes [Ru2(CO)(μ-RC≡CR)(η-C5H5)2] (R=CF3 or Ph) react only under vigorous conditions with additional alkyne to give [Ru2(CO)(μ-C4R4) (η-C5H5)2], but give these same species at room temperature in the presence of acid, shown to be due to the intermediacy of highly reactive 30-electron μ-vinyl cations. Thermally, alkyne linking proceedsvia three-alkyne species [Ru2(μ-C6R6)(η-C5H5)2] to a four-alkyne complex [Ru2(μ-C8R8)(η-C5H5)2], containing an unprecedented C8 ligand composed of a C6 ring with a C2 “tail.” Treatment of [Ru2(CO)(μ-RC≡CR)(η-C5H5)2] with unsaturated metal fragments gives trimetal complexes such as [Ru3(CO)5(μ3-CF3C≡CCF3) (η-C5H5)2]. The MeCN derivative of this species undergoes unusual linking processes on reaction with additional alkyne to giveinter alia [Ru3(CO)3(μ3-CCF3){μ3-C3(CF3)3}(η-C5H5)2], arising from alkyne cleavage, and [Ru3(CO)3{μ3-C4(CF3)2(CO2Me)2}(η-C5H5)2], a closo-pentagonal bipyramidal Ru3C4 cluster.

Notizen: Abstract The title complex (1) is a good hydrogenation catalyst tar diphenylacetylene in homogeneous conditions; it comparison with the activity of other ruthenium clusters is made. Apparently cluster catalysis occurs, but fragmentation to binuclear metallacyclic products containing two alkyne molecules was also observed: these 40 not been previously described and have been characterized by elemental analyses and mass spectrometry. Complex1 contains all alkyne bound parallel to one metal-metal edge. The results obtained support the hypothesis that transition metal clusters with alkynes bound in this fashion could ad as catalysts precursors or as intermediates in the homogeneous hydrogenation of alkynes; this behavior would be an example of structure-reactivity relationship in homogeneous catalysis.

Notizen: Abstract Amplitude and style of ground vibration from two types of pile driving — vibrodriver (periodic) and drophammer (transient) — are considered for the analysis of deformation in a portal frame structure. It is argued that the three-dimensional character of the vibration should be determined in the form of a resultant vector and this requires the measurement of vibration in three directions at right angles together with information on the sense of the motion along each orthogonal axis of vibration. Such resultant vector data during the period of vibration are best processed and presented in the style of a suite of hemispherical projections that comprise upper and lower hemisphere forms, respectively embodying components of upward and downward vibrational motion. It is shown that analysis for the dynamic stability of a simple block foundation is assisted by reference to the hemispherical projection representation and by the use of ground surface acceleration data.

Notizen: Summary A survey of radon in soil gas emissions was carried out in the Carnmenellis area of Cornwall to establish the location and extent of any major radon gas concentrations. Measurements of soil radon gas levels showed considerable variation. Radon emission variation with respect to atmospheric pressure was monitored but results showed no correlation between the variables. A survey of schools in the region with high indoor radon concentrations was carried out for comparison with the results of the main survey. A good correlation was found between the two surveys, suggesting that broad-based radon hazard mapping on a local scale may be feasible.

Notizen: Summary Ground vibration data from impact hammers and vibrodrivers can be processed to provide a basis for estimating levels of ground vibration for future piling. The information from which empirical laws concerning vibration transmission can be formulated usually stems from scaled distance plots. Both the equations and the graphical axes on which the data are plotted are of a logarithmic nature. This renders them less amenable to immediate on-site application. Recommended working laws for estimating vibration transmission are expressed in graphical and tabular form. Some worked examples are included to explain the operation of the system.

Notizen: Summary A programme of laboratory tests was undertaken to identify the volume reduction of a range of granular soils in response to uniform vibration. The purpose of the tests was to quantify the potential compaction settlement of granular soils due to vibrations typical of those experienced when sheet or bearing piles are installed or extracted by vibrodriver. The vibrations in soils within 2–20 m of a vibrodriven pile are well defined as sinusoidal, at the frequency of the vibrodriver, and typically in the range of 1.0g down to 0.02g (whereg=gravitational acceleration). Thein-situ conditions were replicated in the laboratory by vibration of a Rowe cell containing a soil sample. This allowed control of stresses before and during vibration. Tests were conducted on nine granular soils, ranging from uniform Leighton Buzzard sands to a sandy fine-to-medium gravel. Soil samples were prepared at minimum relative density, generally in the saturated state, but also dry and partly saturated. Each sample was consolidated at a selected effective stress of between 10 and 100 kPa. It was then vibrated vertically at increments of controlled acceleration, under conditions of free drainage and maintained confining stress. Reduction in sample thickness was measured continuously. Results showed that even in a small, drained, sample the full volume reduction was reached only after many minutes, although the early response was more rapid. The trends of results showed that: increased surcharge pressure reduced the subsequent vibratory compaction; well-graded soils showed greater compaction than more uniform sands; compaction increased markedly when acceleration exceeded 1 g; saturated soils showed larger compaction than dry and partially saturated soils; compaction was influenced little by frequency, although rate of compaction reduced with frequency increase.

Notizen: Summary Ground vibration data, originating from impact hammers and vibrodrivers and compiled by different research workers, have been plotted in scaled distance form and statistically analysed. A quadratic regression curve rather than a linear regression curve provides a better visual fit to the several data sets. In each case, superimposed on the graphical data points are also the one-half standard deviation and the one standard deviation curves. It is argued that the quadratic one-half standard deviation curves, generated from an analysis of all the reliable vibration information compiled by the authors from impact hammers and vibrodrivers, be used for design of piling operations in order to mitigate excessive environmental vibration.
