    Notes: Abstract A DEA framework is used to examine changes in administrative employment in U.S. manufacturing industries between 1983 and 1989, using data collected by the U.S. Department of Labor. Among other findings, the analysis suggests that production technology is an important factor in explaining inter-industry differences in administrative staffing. In addition, "best practice" staffing efficiencies for Batch industries are shown to hold a distinct (and statistically significant) advantage over that for Line industries. On related issues, this research uncovers no evidence of the "dramatic decreases" in overhead staffing that were suggested in the popular business press during this time period. Clear structural differences in administrative staffing intensities, however, are noted with respect to manufacturing production technology. In their usage of overhead staff, Batch industries tend to be more "professional-worker" intensive, while Line industries are relatively more "non-professional-worker" intensive. These patterns hold up over time and are statistically con-firmed in an analysis of DEA "cones".

    Notes: Summary Fourteen species of the genus Euchaeta (Copepoda: Calanoida) were encountered during two cruises undertaken around South Georgia during November–December 1981 (Summer) and July–August 1983 (Winter). All 14 species were present in summer but only nine in winter. The distribution of the majority of species centered on the mesopelagic (500–1000 m) and bathypelagic (1000–2000 m) depth horizons. During both cruises, four species, Euchaeta Antarctica, E. biloba, E. rasa and E. farrani were numerically dominant. Although all four species had a wide depth distribution, E. Antarctica and E. biloba had distributions centered around the 250–500 m (epi-mesopelagic) and mesopelagic depth horizons. E. rasa was most abundant in the mesopelagic whereas E. farrani, the largest species encountered, was centered on the mesopelagic and bathypelagic depth horizons. Two species, E. Antarctica and E. biloba commonly occurred in the surface 250 m, the former being far more abundant especially over the shelf and shelf break areas, with a high abundance of copepodite stages IV and V being present in summer and adults in winter.

    Notes: Abstract Mesozooplankton (predominantly 200–2000 μm) were sampled at a shelf and an oceanic station close to South Georgia, South Atlantic, during austral spring (October/November) 1997. Onshelf zooplankton biomass was extremely high at 10–16 g dry mass m−2 (0–150 m), 70% comprising the small neritic clausocalaniid copepod Drepanopus forcipatus. Large calanoid species, principally Calanoides acutus and Rhincalanus gigas, contributed only 8–10%. At the oceanic station, biomass in the sampled water column (0–1000 m) was ∼6.5 g dry mass m−2 and 4–6 g dry mass m−2 in the top 200 m. Here, large calanoids composed 40–50% of the standing stock. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) occurred in low abundances at both stations. Vertical profiles obtained with a Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder indicated that populations of C. acutus and R. gigas, which overwinter at depth, had completed their spring ascent and were resident in surface waters. Dry mass, carbon and lipid values were lower than found in summer but were consistent with overwintered populations. Phytoplankton concentrations were considerably higher at the oceanic station (2–3 mg chlorophyll a m−3) and increased over the time on station. In response to this, egg production of both large calanoid species and growth rates of R. gigas approached those measured in summer. Onshelf phytoplankton concentrations were lower (〈1 mg m−3), and low egg production rates suggested food limitation. Here phytoplankton rations equivalent to 6% zooplankton body C would have been sufficient to clear primary production whereas at the oceanic station daily carbon fixation was broadly equivalent to zooplankton carbon biomass.

    Notes: Abstract Egg hatching times were determined at a range of temperatures for four species of commonly occurring Antarctic copepods. At a given temperature the eggs of Rhincalanus gigas took longest to hatch, up to 9 days at 0°C, followed by those of Calanoides acutus, Calanus propinquus and Calanus simillimus. A Bělehrádeks temperature function with the parameter b fixed at −2.05 accounted for 〉95% of the variance for each species. There was an approximate doubling in hatching times between 5°C and 0°C for R. gigas and for the other species the increase in embryonic duration was 40–50% at the lower temperature.

    Notes: Abstract Zooplankton was sampled on a synoptic grid of stations centered on South Georgia during the austral summer of 1981/82 and winter 1983. Within the top 1000 m layer at oceanic stations, copepods averaged 48% of the total biomass in summer and winter, but outnumbered all other taxa combined by a factor of 10. In winter the mean zooplankton biomass within the top 1000 m was 68% of its summer level. Copepod biomass was 77% of its summer level. During both surveys, the large and abundant Calanoides acutus and Rhincalanus gigas dominated the copepod biomass and, with several other species, showed a marked downwards seasonal migration out of the top 250 m layer in winter. Antarctic epipelagic species predominated around the island during summer but tended to be replaced by sub-Antarctic and cosmopolitan species during the winter. Factors likely to influence our estimates of overall copepods abundance and changes in species composition include seasonality of reproduction, net mesh selection and differences in water mass distribution. The observed trends are attributed mainly to variation in the position of the Polar Front which lay north of the island during the summer survey yet lay across the survey area in winter. This resulted in a greater influence of sub-Antarctic water around South Georgia in winter and the displacement of Antarctic species.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of the vertical temperature in tropical Lake McIlwaine were used to calculate the time-averaged (≃ 6 months) vertical diffusivity coefficient (Kz) in the metalimnion and hypolimnion. The mean value of Kz (0.21 cm2 s−1) was correlated with the lake surface area. The mass transport rates of PO4-P and NH4-N, upward from the hypolimnion to the metalimnion, were calculated using Kz and measured values of the nutrient concentration gradients. During a period of 4.5 months when the water was stably stratified, PO4-P was transported upward at a mean rate of 42 kg day−1 and NH4-N at a mean rate of 162 kg day−1 over the entire lake.
