Notes: Abstract The interaction between CH4 molecules shall be studied by neutron spectroscopic measurements for different phases of the substance. In a first investigation the molecular rotations are found to be completely free in the liquid state. A symmetrical splitting of the levelL=1 is observed. A comparison of the experimental results with transition probabilities calculated only from degrees of degeneracy gives good agreement for transitionsΔL≧2 and for those transitionsΔL=1 which haveL≧2 as the initial state. These transitions, therefore, appear to be rather independent ofL. The experiments indicate futhermore, that also with respect to their translational motions the molecules behave like in a gas.

Notes: Abstract The rotational transitionJ=1→J=0 in solid H2 was measured by incoherent neutron scattering. Results are presented for the mean energy of this transition as a function of the ortho concentration at temperatures 4.2 and 1.2 K. The data at 4.2 K are compared with theoretical calculations resolving a discrepancy between these calculations and previous experiments. At 1.2 K and high ortho concentrations, our data cannot be interpeted in terms of an orientationally orderedfcc phase as would be expected. This observation is discussed in terms of an orientationally orderedhcp phase originating perhaps from the effects of internal strains.

Notes: Summary In this paper the results ofLauterbach, Jubelt & Others are completed by photomicrographic, thermomagnetic and X-ray investigations. The rock samples consists of antigoritisated serpentinite containing veins. The material of the veins consists of magnetite and ψ-Fe2O3. Some crystal physical considerations concerning the process of antigoritisation are represented.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Charakter der chemischen Bindung im Magnetit wird diskutiert.
Notes: Summary Types of chemical bonding in magnetite are discussed. Magnetite spinel lattice is characterized by tetrahedral covalent bonds and octahedral electrovalent bonds. The consequences for oxidation processes are studied in connection with hitherto existing experimental and theoretical results.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Normaltypserpentinite bestehen aus Chrysotil.
Notes: Summary The normal type of serpentinites consists of chrysotile. The magnetite parts are essential parts of the structure of chrysotile serpentinites (primary magnetite). Chrysotile is changed to antigorite by mechanical deformations. The magnetite parts of rock structure are lost and they sat down in the veins of serpentinite rocks (secondary magnetite). In this paper the thermomagnetic diagrams and the results of X-ray investigations of secondary and primary magnetite are described. Some results of susceptibility measurements are given. The secondary magnetite is characterized by a region of oxydation in the interval 280–400° C (secondary magnetite→γ-Fe2O3→α-Fe2O3). The oxydation to α-Fe2O3 is remarkably. On the thermomagnetic diagrams of primary magnetite no typical oxydation region is to be seen. The oxydation: primary magnetite→α-Fe2O3 is very small. The interval of measured susceptibility values amounts to (10–1500)·10−6 cgs units. The essential variability of the main parts of serpentinite samples is characterized by the great changes of susceptibility values from point to point. The determined values of specific saturation magnetization (Gauss. cm3 g−1), the X-ray powder data, and some results on remanent magnetization are given.

Notes: Summary For the discussion of the physico-chemical state and the phase transitions in the earth interior it is necessary to compare the results of geophysical field measurements with geophysical solid state investigations in the laboratory under extremep,T-conditions. In correspondence with the theoretical studies about the behaviour of the materials in the deep earth we investigated two groups of materials: (I) different types of rocks with reference to their elastic and thermal behaviour under extreme conditions, (II) simple compounds of elements which belong possibly to the representatives of the deep mantle and the earth interior. The method for measurement of the thermal diffusivity and the influence of anisotropy on the propagation of elastic waves in different rocks is described. The results of the dependence of the electric resistivity on pressure and temperature on synthetic and natural chalkogenides of the 3d-transition metals are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Incoherent neutron scattering experiments are reported at a number of scattering angles for solid H2 using the time-of-flight technique. The samples had an ortho concentration ofX≦0.91 and the temperatures were 4.2, 2.2 and 1.2 K. The recorded scattering functions exhibit the elastic line, the ortho-para conversion line, the phonon spectrum on the energy-gain side of the neutrons and finally the phonon spectrum on the energy-loss side. Analysis of the data shows multiple scattering to be very important especially at small scattering angles. Accordingly, the results of an extensive calculation are reported that include up to four-fold scattering. The phonon spectrum that brings calculation and experiment in agreement at all angles is presented. It is concluded from the comparison between the spectra at various temperatures that unexpectedly the samples have always remained in the hexagonal close-packed phase even below the usual transition temperature into the cubic phase. Comparison is made with the spectrum (also in thehcp phase) obtained from coherent neutron scattering. The high-energy phonon tail, to be expected for quantum crystals, is observed and is qualitatively consistent with that in a similar spectral density derived theoretically from ortho-para conversion data under pressure. No evidence of a libron spectrum atT=2.2 K for a sample withX=0.91 could be found, which is consistent with the absence of the cubic orientationally ordered phase in these experiments.
