    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Vorratsschädlinge wurden bei 33° und 75% rel. Luftfeuchtigkeit auf 23 Pilzarten und einer Actinomycetenart aufgezogen, die sich auf Samen entwickeln. Cryptolestes ferrugineus vollendete seine Entwicklung auf 10 Pilzarten in 22 bis 34 Tagen; die kürzeste Entwicklungsdauer, 22 Tage, zeigte sich auf Trichothecium roseum Lk. und die längste, 34 Tage, auf Fusarium moniliforme Sheld. Oryzaephilus mercator entwickelte sich auf 18 Pilzarten in 21 bis 40 Tagen. Die kürzeste Entwicklungsperiode ergab sich auf Mucor sphaerosporus Hagem., die längste auf Chaetomium funicola Cooke. Keine Entwicklung trat auf Streptomyces griseus (Krainsky) Waksman & Henrici ein.
    Notes: Abstract Two stored-product insects were reared on 23 species of seed-borne fungi and 1 species of actinomycete at 33°C and 75% R.H. Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) completed development on 10 species of fungi; the shortest development period, 22 days, was on Trichothecium roseum Lk. and the longest, 34 days, on Fusarium moniliforme Sheld. Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel) completed development on 18 species of fungi; the shortest developmental period, 21 days, was on Mucor sphaerosporus Hagem, and the longest, 40 days, on Chaetomium funicola Cooke. None developed on Streptomyces griseus (Krainsky) Waksman & Henrici.

    Notes: Abstract We propose a Veneziano-like model for γγ→VV reactions near threshold involving exchanges of 0− trajectories int- andu-channels. The model is applied to γγ→ωω, ϕϕ, ρϕ, ρω and ωϕ processes. The model in its simplest form cannot account for the disparities in the cross sections for $$\gamma \gamma \to {\rm K}^{ * 0} \bar K^{*0}$$ andK *+ K *− and for γγ→ρ0ρ0 and ρ+ρ−. Further refinements of the model are suggested.

    Notes: Abstract Eleven-kilogram parcels of HY-320 wheat, a cultivar of the new Canada Prairie Spring class, were kept at 15 and 19% initial moisture contents (IMC) in simulated storage in a Manitoba farm granary for 60 weeks to determine biotic and abiotic changes and mycotoxin production. Ochratoxin A reached a maximum of 0.24 ppm by week 20 in the 19% IMC wheat, but was absent in the 15% IMC wheat; no other mycotoxins were detected. Temperature, moisture content, O2 and CO2 levels, fat acidity values, seed germination, microfloral incidence and abundance, and the presence of other mycotoxins were monitored. Principal component analysis of all variables showed that the first principal components accounted for 32–41% of the system variability, and contained the ochratoxin A variable. Ochratoxin A was produced in moist grain that had decreased seed germination andAltermaria activity, and high fungal activity byPenicillium andAspergillus versicolor. Compared to other stored cereals previously studied, HY-320 wheat would be ranked in a low-risk category for mycotoxin formation, based on the ochratoxin A levels observed.

    Notes: Abstract Although the temperature of grain in the holds of ships arriving in Japan from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China and USA during 1966–67 varied with the grain, country of origin, and season, it was likely to be determined by the temperature of the grain when it was loaded into the ships. Dockage level varied among bulks of the same type of grain, but the mean dockage in any one crop was always larger when originating from the USA than from other countries. Generally the viability of the grain was good, but when it was reduced, interaction of variety and time seemed to be the principal cause. Field fungi — non-pathogenic Alternaria, and the pathogenic Helminthosporium and Fusarium species — tended to die out, during transport, thus reducing the hazards of new pathogenic strains being distributed across international boundaries. The non-pathogenic field fungi, Cladosporium and Phaeoramularia, were persistent. Although common in grain shipments from all countries, species of Aspergillus and Penicillium varied quantitatively with the different grains. In this respect, more Aspergillus spp. were found in grains originating in the USA and Australia than those originating in Canada. The primary contamination by storage fungi appeared to be at the source, at or after harvest and in storage prior to export.

    Notes: Abstract Wheat, barley, and maize, each in 15-kg parcels at 15 and 19% initial moisture content (IMC), were kept in a Bavarian farm granary from June through November 1990. During this period, the grain at each IMC was analyzed for mycotoxins and monitored for grain temperature, carbon dioxide, seed germination, and microfloral incidence and abundance. Barley and maize stored for 20 weeks at 19% IMC contained ochratoxin A in amounts of 70 and 90 μg/kg, respectively. This mycotoxin was not detected in wheat stored at 19% IMC, nor in the grains stored at 15% IMC. Aflatoxin B1, sterigmatocystin, citrinin, and zearalenone were also assayed but not detected in grains stored at either IMC. Principal component analysis of the data indicated that ochratoxin A was produced in a damp niche in maize, when abundant metabolic activity and CO2 production by Penicillium glandicola and Aspergillus spp. were common.

    Notes: Abstract: In this paper, an attempt has been made to carry over known results for the finite element Galerkin method for a time dependent parabolic equation with nonsmooth initial data to an integro-differential equation of parabolic type. More precisely, for the homogeneous problem a standard energy technique in conjunction with a duality argument is used to obtain an L 2-error estimate of order for the semidiscrete solution when the given initial function is only in L 2. Further, for the nonhomogeneous case with zero initial condition, an error estimate of order uniformly in time is proved, provided that the nonhomogeneous term is in L ∞(L 2). The present paper provides a complete answer to an open problem posed on p. 106 of the book Finite Element Methods for Integro-differential Equations by Chen and Shih.

    Notes: Summary The effects of exogenous gonadal hormones on the lipid contents of the liver and ovary and also on water content in the frog,Rana esculenta, were studied. Estrogen treatment significantly enhanced, whereas testosterone treatment reduced, the lipid and cholesterol contents. Water content of the frogs increased significantly after treatment by either hormone.
