Description / Table of Contents: Summary Measurement of α-tocopherol concentrations circulating either in plasma or serum is the most common method of measuring the vitamin E status in men. The analytical determination with a suitable HPLC method produces precise and reliable results. The interpretation of the measured α-tocopherol values is complicated by the strong positive correlation with different blood lipids. A considerable misinterpretation of the data will occur if these confounding factors are not taken into account by a suitable adjustment. Different methods have been described in the literature which tried to control the confounding effect of blood lipids. These methods were not completely satisfying. Therefore, a mathematical regression model, based on residuals, is introduced and applied to the data of the VERA-study (Verbundstudie Ernährungserhebung und Risikofaktoren Analytik) and the consequences of the lipid-adjustment of the tocopherol values are studied in further statistical procedures. Thereafter, lipid-adjusted tocopherol concentrations can be subjected to more extensive statistical evaluations without the requirement of special stratification.

Notes: Abstract This is the second part of two papers which are concerned with generalized Petrov-Galerkin schemes for elliptic periodic pseudodifferential equations in ℝ n . This setting covers classical Galerkin methods, collocation, and quasi-interpolation. The numerical methods are based on a general framework of multiresolution analysis, i.e. of sequences of nested spaces which are generated by refinable functions. In this part, we analyse compression techniques for the resulting stiffness matrices relative to wavelet-type bases. We will show that, although these stiffness matrices are generally not sparse, the order of the overall computational work which is needed to realize a certain accuracy is of the formO(N(logN) b ), whereN is the number of unknowns andb ≥ 0 is some real number.

Notes: Abstract Based on multifluid equations derived from the Boltzman equation under inclusion of ionization and recombination reactions, the following convective processes in magnetoactive plasma flows transverse to homogeneous magnetic fields are investigated:The build-up of the nonuniform plasma state, the intercomponent thermal nonequilibrium and the reactive nonequilibrium in dependence of the flow coordinate. Due to the complexity of the problem, a numerical approach is used, parallel to which an approximate analytical theory is developed.

Notes: Abstract We report the first observation of the doubly-magic nucleus100Sn. This isotope was produced by nuclear fragmentation of124Xe projectiles at 1095 A·MeV using the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at GSI, Darmstadt. The projectile fragments were separated in flight with the projectile-fragment separator FRS and identified by measuring event by event the magnetic rigidity, the time of flight and the energy deposition.

Notes: Abstract We investigate several numerical methods for solving the pseudodifferential equationAu=f on the n-dimensional torusT n . We examine collocation methods as well as Galerkin-Petrov methods using various periodical spline functions. The considered spline spaces are subordinated to a uniform rectangular or triangular grid. For given approximation method and invertible pseudodifferential operatorA we compute a numerical symbolα C , resp.α G , depending onA and on the approximation method. It turns out that the stability of the numerical method is equivalent to the ellipticity of the corresponding numerical symbol. The case of variable symbols is tackled by a local principle. Optimal error estimates are established.

Notes: Abstract In the present paper we prove the stability of a nodal spline collocation method for (locally) strongly elliptic zero order pseudodifferential equations inL 2 (Ω), where Ω is a bounded Lipschitz domain inℝ n . As trial functions we use multi-polynomial splines of odd multi-degree on a rectangular grid. The key of our analysis is the reduction to the case of an operator with frozen symbol by using a local principle due to one of the authors [30]. Moreover, for a right hand sightf ∈H 3 (Ω),s〉n/2, we obtain an asymptotic error estimate. Finally we extend these results to the case of (locally) strongly elliptic pseudodifferential equations on the torusT n.

Notes: Summary We consider a spline collocation method for strongly elliptic zero order pseudodifferential equationsp gw Au=f on a cube ω=(0, 1) m . Utilizing multilinear spline functions which are zero at the boundary σω we collocate at the meshpoints inside ω. For classical strongly elliptic translation invariant pseudodifferential operators, we verify the stability of the considered collocation method inL 2(ω). Afterwards, form≦2 and a right hand sidef∈H 8(ω),s〉m/2, we prove an asymptotic convergence estimate.
