Abstract:
Notes:
Abstract Rat urinary bladder stones produced by injections into the kidneys of L-forms ofProteus mirabilis deposit initially as amorphous magnesium ammonium phosphate. The stones formed three weeks after infection give either no X-ray diffraction rings or a few broad diffuse diffraction rings. Their composition was determined from infrared spectroscopy by comparing their complete IR spectra to standard spectra. Stones obtained six, seven and eleven weeks after infection by the same organism gave strong single-crystal X-ray diffraction patterns of magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (struvite). This represents the firstin vivo study showing the chronological development of crystallinity in urinary calculi from amorphous precursors.
