Notes: Abstract. The methanol extract of the stem of Sinofranchetia chinensis inhibited the activity of xanthine oxidase in vitro. Bioassay-guided purification led to the isolation of liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin as the main xanthine oxidase inhibitors. This inhibition of enzyme activity was found to be dose dependent, with an IC50 value of approximately 49.3 μM for liquiritigenin and 55.8 μM for isoliquiritigenin. Lineweaver-Burk transformation of the inhibition data indicated that the inhibition was of a mixed type for both liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin. For liquiritigenin, the Ki and KI were determined to be 14.0 μM and 151.6 μM, respectively. For isoliquiritigenin, the Ki and KI were determined to be 17.4 μM and 81.9 μM, respectively. These results suggest that these natural products could be used to treat conditions where the inhibition of xanthine oxidase is warranted.

Notes: Abstract  Traceability is an essential property of a measurement result. However, it is recognized that the results of chemical measurements can be lacking in this property. In this paper we try to show how to understand and establish traceability in chemical measurement. The traceability connotation and the necessity of tracing back to SI units are described by means of comparability well-known. The roles and interrelationships of quality assurance, accreditation, calibration, reference material, analytical method, comparison and uncertainty in establishing traceability are explained with the aid of a block diagram. The paper also includes diagrams illustrating the Chinese situation and experience of establishing traceability for chemical measurement in China.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes the corrections required to velocimetry data obtained in PIV studies where the illuminated light sheet is viewed obliquely. The condition where the mean flow is principally normal to the sheet is considered and the non-linear transformation equations required to obtain measurements derived. An example is presented where the viewing corrections were applied to images obtained in an aerodynamic blade-vortex-interaction study.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation of freely rising spherical bubbles through a quiescent liquid is presented. The objective of the experiments is to examine the validity of a recently proposed history force expression for clean, spherical bubbles at finite Reynolds number (Mei et al. 1994). Excellent agreement between the measured and predicted bubble trajectory is obtained when using the proposed history force expression; the data presented herein thus provide an indirect validation of the history force expression. The range of Reynolds number and Weber Number based on the terminal velocity are 13 to 212 and 0.03 to 0.69, respectively. The history force expression is only applicable when the quiescent liquid is free of contaminants. Otherwise, both the steady and unsteady forces are difficult to predict because the liquid/ vapor interface is partially immobilized.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes an in-line viewing system for use in stereo vision and its practical implementation in 3-component, PIV studies in a wind tunnel. The transformation equations, relating image co-ordinates to object position, are developed and the significance of view matching and quantisation in error propagation are discussed and the resulting errors estimated. Directional ambiguity is resolved by pulse intensity coding and the use of an intensity sensitive image tracking algorithm.

Notes: Abstract  Rice sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani Kühn, is one of the three major diseases of rice. The present study was conducted with an F2 clonal population of Jasmine 85/Lemont. The F2 population, including 128 clonal families, was inoculated by short toothpicks incubated with a strain, RH-9 of the fungus. Based on field disease evaluations in 2 years and a genetic map with 118 evenly distributed molecular markers, we identified six quantitative trait loci (QTLs) contributing to sheath blight resistance. These QTLs, qSB-2, qSB-3, qSB-7, qSB-9-1, qSB-9-2 and qSB-11, were located on chromosomes 2, 3, 7, 9 and 11, respectively. The respective alleles of qSB-2, qSB-3, qSB-7, and qSB-9-2 from Jasmine 85 could explain 21.2%, 26.5%, 22.2% and 10.1% of the total phenotypic variation, respectively; while the alleles of qSB-9-1 and qSB-11 from Lemont could explain 9.8% and 31.2% of the total phenotypic variation. Of these qSB-2 and qSB-11 could be detected in both years, while remaining loci were detected only in a single year. Furthermore, four QTLs (qHD-2, qHD-3, qHD-5 and qHD-7) controlling heading date and three QTLs (qPH-3, qPH-4 and qPH-11) controlling plant height were also identified. Though rice sheath blight resistance may be influenced by morphological traits, such as heading date and plant height, in the present study most detected resistance loci were not linked to the loci for heading date or plant height.

Notes: Abstract Mn2O3/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method, and the maximum monolayer dispersion capacity or dispersion threshold value of Mn2O3 on the surface of γ-Al2O3 was determined to be 13.08% from the decomposition mass loss of supported Mn(NO3)2 in the monolayer state. This was compared with the values estimated from a close-packed monolayer model and an interaction model. It was confirmed that the high activities and selectivities of the catalysts for benzoic acid hydrogenation to benzaldehyde are due to the monolayer dispersion of the Mn2O3 on the surface of γ-Al2O3.

Notes: Abstract A new rice semidwarfing gene which is not allelic tosd1, temporarily designated assdg, might be of use as a new source of semidwarfism in rice breeding programs. We report here the identification of a DNA marker closely linked to this gene. The DNA marker was identified by testing 120 mapped rice RFLP makers as hybridization probes for Southern analysis of a pair of nearly isogenic lines with or withoutsdg. Linkage association of the marker with the gene was verified using a F2 population segregating for semidwarfism. RFLP analysis showed thatsdg is closely linked to a single-copy DNA clone RZ182 on chromosome 5, with a distance of 4.3 centiMorgans between them. This marker may facilitate early selection for the semidwarfing gene in rice breeding programs

Notes: Abstract Thin films of Ba1−x Sr x CuO2+δ in the infinite layer structure were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3 substrates. Excellent in-plane order during growth was shown by RHEED. The lattice constant inc-direction was determined by x-ray diffraction. It changed from 0.404 nm to 0.345 nm whenx increased from 0 to 1. The film surfaces were smooth with some outgrowths as revealed by atomic force microscopy. Excellent crystal structure and epitaxy of the films was demonstrated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The room temperature dc resistivities of the films varied from 10−3 Ωcm to 102 Ωcm, depending onx and on the oxidation conditions during growth. The resistivities of most films showed negative temperature coefficients and obeyed the conduction model of variable range hopping at low temperatures. In the composition rangex=0.5–0.8, however, an anomalous resistance dependence on temperature was observed in many samples. The resistivities started to deviate from the monotonic behaviour just below 200 K and in some cases dropped remarkably at temperatures below 140 K.

Notes: Abstract A data base was generated for quantifying effects of thermal time (degree-days) on the appearance of new leaves, the expansion of such leaves to maximum area, their death, the appearance of new internodes below the node associated with such leaves, and the extension of these internodes to maximum length. The data base for a list of crop (agronomic and horticultural), weed, and native Tallgrass Prairie plants has been summarized, with equations for the above events as a function of degree days, with appropriate base temperatures and maximum cut-off temperatures, in a Java applet which is available at a website with the URL 〈http://th190-50.agn.uiuc.edu〉. Associated graphical plots such as shown in this paper are also given. Branching behavior was accounted for. These events predict the effect of thermal time on leaf age and its height in the plant canopy, both important factors needed for upscaling functions for leaf behavior to those for behavior of the plant canopy. The data base is evolving to include coefficients for other species. Coefficients are used to predict the leaf area index of the canopy, which is important for predicting evapotranspiration from the crop and the protection of the soil from erosion.
