Notes: Abstract Electrochemical and electrical conductance cells have been widely used at ORNL over the years to quantitatively determine equilibrium constants and their salt effects to 300°C (EMF) and 800°C (conductance) at the saturation pressure of water (EMF) and to 4000 bars (conductance). The most precise results to 300°C for a large number of weak acids and bases show very similar thermodynamic behavior, which will be discussed. Results for the ionization constants of water, NH3(aq), HCl(aq), and NaCl(aq), which extend well into the supercritical region, have been fitted in terms of a model with dependence on density and temperature. The entropy change is found to be the driving force for ion-association reactions and this tendency increases (as it must) with increasing temperature at a given pressure. Also, the variation of all thermodynamic properties is greatly reduced at high fixed densities. Considerable variation occurs at low densities. From this analysis, the dependence of the reaction thermodynamics on the P-V-T properties of the solvent is shown, and the implication of large changes in hydration for solutes in the vicinity of the critical temperature will be discussed. Finally, the change in the molar compressibility coefficient for all reactions in water is shown to be the same and dependent only on the compressibility of the solvent.

Notes: Abstract Raman spectra have been used to identify and characterize aqueous hydroxouranyl(VI) complexes from 0.0038 to 0.647M at pH from 0.24 to 14.96 adjusted witheither HCF3SO3 and/or (CH3)4NOH under ambient conditions. In acidic media(0.24 ≤ pH ≤ 5.63), the existence of four species UO2+ 2,(UO2)2(OH)3+,(UO2)2(OH)2+ 2, and (UO2)3(OH)+ 5 was confirmed. At high uranium concentrations(ΣU ≥ 0.1M) and in strongly acidic solutions (pH ≤ 1.94), one additional weakband was observed at 883±1 cm−1. This band was assumed torepresent thespecies UO2+ 2 with a reduced hydration number. In neutral and basic solutions(5.63 ≤ pH ≤ 14.96), five complexes were postulated: (UO2)3(OH)− 7,(UO2)3(OH)2− 8,(UO2)3(OH)4− 10,(UO2)3(OH)5− 11, andUO2(OH)2− 4, based on theassigned symmetrical stretching frequencies of the UO2 group in each complex.(UO2)3(OH)− 7 is the dominant species over mostof the pH range (4.53–12.78).The stability ranges of the other trinuclear species are:(UO2)3(OH)2− 8 (10.97 ≤pH ≤ 13.83), (UO2)3(OH)4− 10 (10.97 ≤ pH ≤ 13.85) and (UO2)3(OH)5− 11(12.53 ≤pH ≤ 14.10), which were identified for the first time. Finally, the monomericuranate anion OU2(OH)2− 4 dominates in highly basic solution (12.48 ≤ pH ≤14.96). The linear correlation between the symmetrical vibrational frequency v 1of the linear O = U = O entity and the average number $$\overline n$$ of hydroxide ligandscoordinated to each uranium atom in a given species has been reaffirmed andexpanded: $$v_1 ({\text{cm}}^{{\text{ - 1}}} ) = - 22X\overline n + 870$$ The v 1 correlation was also used to predict the vibration frequencies of theundetected monomers UO2(OH)+, UO2(OH)o 2,UO2(OH)− 3 at 848±2, 826±2, and804±2 cm±1, respectively. Characteristic band areas for eachuranyl hydrolyzedspecies were determined by Raman spectra decomposition and their hydrolysisquotients log Q, were calculated. Structures of the four triuranylspecies are proposed.

Notes: Abstract No absorption lines between 15 and 100 keV have been detected in burst spectra accumulated by BATSE. Almost 250 bursts have been inspected visually, and a computerized search has begun. Our simulations show that BATSE could indeed detect lines similar to those observed byGinga in strong bursts, and our tests of the detectors' actual capabilities demonstrate they function as understood. The apparent discrepancy between BATSE andGinga is not yet compelling, and therefore the BATSE nondetections do not invalidate theGinga detections. Nonetheless, the absence of BATSE line detections indicates a low line-occurrence frequency.

Notes: Abstract Very Large Array (VLA) radio observations of precisely-located GRB error boxes have been performed to search for fading and quiescent emission associated with γ-ray bursts. These observations were made as quickly as 23 hours and as late as 13 years after the time of the burst. Our measurements presented here have found GRB error boxes to be empty of sources to the 80 µJy level (λ = 3.6 cm) at 9 months, to 1 mJy (20 cm) at 9 days, and probably to 5 mJy (20 cm) at 23 hours after the bursts.

Notes: Summary We have constructed and analysed somatic cell hybrids from cell lines containing balanced reciprocal translocations involving chromosome 19 and providing two new breakpoints on 19q. These and other hybrids have been tested with a series of markers from 19q to enhance the existing map. Several new cloned DNA sequences that map to 19q13.3–19qter are reported; the locus D19Z1 has been analysed by CHEF gel electrophoresis.

Notes: Abstract It has been shown that the acoustic response of imperfect interfaces may be described by a quasi-static spring model. In the present paper, experimental data on the geometry of the contacts between two diffusion-bonded blocks have been used to determine the “spring stiffness” of such interfaces which have been correlated with experimentally determined ultrasonic reflection coefficients. The correlation between the theoretical reflection coefficient and the “spring stiffness” was found to be in excellent agreement with experimentally-observed values, if the disbonds are of infinitesimally small thickness. For disbonds of finite thickness, the agreement is less satisfactory. Reasons for the discrepancy in the latter case are unknown at the present time.

Notes: Abstract The application of ultrasonic reflectivity for the characterization of a variety of copper diffusion bonds is described. The quality of each diffusion bond has been described by its ultimate tensile strength. Furthermore, fractography of the failed bonds provided information on the relative fraction of bonded areas as well as the geometry of the bonds. This paper provides the experimental results obtained as well as empirical correlations between the quantities determined.

Notes: Abstract Chromosome analysis of nine species ofHaemanthus (2n = 16) and four species ofScadoxus (2n = 18), using conventional stains, Quinacrine fluorescence and C-banding, has shown that the two genera do not possess significant amounts of constitutive heterochromatin. The two genera are closely related and differ in respect of a translocation which has resulted in the dysploid reduction in chromosome number from 2n = 18 inScadoxus to 2n = 16 inHaemanthus.

Notes: Abstract The Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) is a 215 cm3 passivelycooled germanium detector designed primarily to study spectral features of gamma ray bursts. Since shortly after its launch on 1994 Nov. 1 it has been producing high-resolution spectra of GRBs and solar flares. Some of these spectra are presented here. Although it has not yet detected any line features in GRBs-none were expected so early in the mission-several bursts have been seen simultaneously by TGRS, the Konus instruments on the same spacecraft, and the BATSE instrument on Compton GRO. A comparison of the spectra obtained by these various instruments, as presented here, may resolve the question of whether line features actually exist, and if so provide detailed spectroscopy to determine their physical origin.
