    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si è misurata ed analizzata la fotoluminescenza del composto a strati CdInGaS4. Si è trovato che la larga banda di emissione a circa 1.9 eV è composta di tre bande con picchi a 2.16, 1.98 e 1.76 eV a 4.8 K. Queste bande sono dovute a transizioni da libero a legato o da donatore ad accettore. Si è trovata una nuova banda di emissione con picco a 2.38 eV. Questa banda mostra che l'intensità di picco dipende marcatamente dalla posizione nel cristallo ed è correlata a centri localizzati. Si discute l'origine dei centri.
    Abstract: Резюме Измеряется и анализируется фотолюминесценция слоистых соединений CdInGaS4. Обнаружено, что широкая полоса излучения около 1.95 эВ состоит из трех зон 2.16, 1.98 и 1.76 эВ при 4.8 К. Эти зоны связаны с переходами из свободного состояния в связанное или от донора к акцептору. Мы обнаружили новую полосу излучения вблизи 2.38 эВ. Эта полоса имеет интенсивность, которая зависит от положения в кристалле и связана с локализованными центрами. Обсуждается природа этих центров.
    Notes: Summary The photoluminescence of the layered compound CdInGaS4 was measured and analysed. The broad emission band at about 1.95 eV was found to be composed of three bands peaking at 2.16, 1.98 and 1.76 eV at 4.8K. These bands are due to free-to-bound or donor-to-acceptor transitions. We have found a new emission band peaking at 2.38 eV. This band shows that peak intensity markedly depends on the position in the crystal and is related to localized centres. The origin of the centres is discussed.

    Notes: Summary In four rice (Oryza sativa L.) mutants resistant to hydroxy-L-proline (Hyp), HYP101, HYP203, HYP205 and HYP210, and in their original variety, Nipponbare, free proline and Hyp contents in the seeds and in the 14-day-old seedlings have been determined. The four mutants can be divided into two groups: HYP101 and HYP203 are classified as to recessive gene and the levels of free proline are similar to that of the original variety; the second group includes mutants HYP205 and HYP210 where the Hyp resistance is transmitted heterozygously and, both in the seeds and in the seedlings, a remarkable increase in free proline content is observed. In particular, free proline contents in the seeds of HYP205 and HYP210 are, respectively, 24 and 12 times that of the original variety. Hyp is detected only in the seedlings cultured with Hyp solution. In the Hyp resistant seedlings of HYP205 and HYP210, Hyp contents are twice that of the original variety and less than half in the seedlings of HYP101 and HYP203. Hyp resistance and differential proline levels are also evident in the callus initiated from the mutants. This suggests that the Hyp resistant mutants are good genetic markers both in planta and in vitro. The Hyp mutants are also discussed with regard to stress resistance.

    Notes: Abstract A λZAPII-cDNA library constructed from poly(A)+-RNA isolated from Fe-deficient barley roots was used for differential screening of barley roots grown in the presence and absence of Fe. Among seven clones that hybridised specifically to the probe for Fe deficiency, one clone (Ids2) was sequenced. Using a part of the cDNA sequence as a probe, a genomic-DNA library was probed and a corresponding DNA clone was isolated and sequenced. The predicted amino acid sequence resembled 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase. Ids2 had a metal regulatory element as well as Cu regulatory elements of CUP1 gene of yeast MT.

    Notes: Summary 1. The responses of pyramidal neurons of rat prepyriform cortex to ionophoretic application of acetylcholine (ACh) were studied in a submerged, perfused brain slice. 2. ACh excited some neurons but only if applied to an area near to the cut surface of the slice. This area contained the basal dendrites of the pyramidal cells and some cell bodies. No excitation was seen if ACh was applied at depths of 250µm or more from the cut surface, an area which contained only apical dendrites, although the apical dendrites were very sensitive to excitatory amino acids such as aspartate (Asp) and glutamate (Glu). 3. On all neurons which did not discharge to ionophoretic application of ACh, ACh potentiated the response to Glu and Asp. No potentiation of amino acid responses was obtained on apical dendrites. The potentiation had a time course similar to that of the discharge of neurons which fired to ACh. This observation suggests that pyramidal neurons have receptors for ACh on basal but not apical dendrites. 4. The ACh response in the basal dendrite-soma region was elicted by pilocarpine and blocked by atropine but not curare. This was true whether the response studied was direct excitation or potentiation of the response to an amino acid. 5. The ACh response was associated with a voltage-dependent increase in membrane resistance which had a slow time course and appeared to be due to a turning off of an M current, as described by Brown and Adams (1980) in sympathetic ganglion cells. The effects of ACh were minimal at the resting potential but increased with depolarization. ACh had no effect on the current-voltage relation of the cell, except at depolarized potentials of less than -60 mV. 6. Ionophoretic application of Ba2+ to the basal dendritic region resulted in potentiation of the amino acid responses and sometimes induced a discharge similar to that of ACh. Since Ba2+ mimics the ACh response, presumably by a direct blockade of the M channel, the effects of Ba2+ on apical dendrites were tested to determine whether these dendrites contain M channels associated with a transmitter receptor other than ACh. However, Ba2+ did not induce potentiation in apical dendrites, suggesting that M channels are also restricted to the basal dendrites or cell bodies. 7. The potentiation of a response to a depolarizing constant-current pulse was comparable in degree and time course to that of amino acid responses, indicating that the ACh potentiation of the amino acid responses is a predictable augmentation of any input which brings the membrane potential into the range of M-channel activation. 8. The segregation of ACh receptors to a discrete portion of the cell suggests that they are functional receptors and may be part of a physiologic arrangement which directs different afferent inputs to different portions of the dendritic tree. Such segregation of receptors may also occur on other neurons with distributed inputs.
