Notes: Abstract Active electrode materials for a new zinc electrowinning process, in which the thermodynamic cell voltage is about half that of the conventional process by replacing oxygen evolution by anodic oxidation of SO2 produced in the zinc smelting process have been studied. Immersion in HF solution and subsequent cyclic voltammetry (CV) in sulfuric acid are known to be effective surface activation treatments of the amorphous alloy electrodes. The galvanostatic cathodic reduction (CR) treatment was applied to obtain further activation for sulfite oxidation for HF- and CV-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous nickel-valve metal-platinum group metal alloys. This treatment has been found to be effective in enhancing the activity. Among the amorphous Ni-40Nb alloys containing platinum group elements, the platinum-containing electrode showed the highest catalytic activity, which was higher than that of platinized platinum. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic activities of CR-treated electrodes prepared from amorphous alloys containing platinum and rhodium, and platinum and ruthenium were higher than that of the electrode containing only platinum. According to XPS analysis of the amorphous Ni-40Nb-1Pt-1Ru alloy specimen the enrichment of platinum and ruthenium occurred by CV treatment, and a small amount of oxidized platinum and ruthenium species remained on the electrode surfaces, but most of them were cathodically reduced to the metallic state by CR treatment. High catalytic activities for sulfite oxidation can be attributed to the metallic state of platinum and ruthenium contained in the alloy electrodes, even though the activity of these electrocatalysts is higher than that of pure Pt or Ru.

Notes: Abstract By replacing CH4 with CD4, the isotope effect on the reaction of adsorbed hydrocarbon species with CO2 over Ni/Al2O3 catalyst was studied using pulse surface reaction rate analysis (PSRA). The first-order rate constant for this step was 1.45 times larger for CH4 than for CD4. The observed isotope effect suggests that the reaction of adsorbed hydrocarbon species with CO2 (or adsorbed oxygen) is rate-controlling for the reforming of CH4.

Notes: Abstract. The Fermi surface (FS) shape of the organic superconductor (MDT-TSF)(AuI2)0.436 with an incommensurate anion structure (MDT-TSF: methylenedithio-tetraselenafulvalene) has been investigated by means of the optical reflectance spectra and angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO). The difference of the plasma frequencies between the interstack and the intrastack directions indicates that the overall band structure has small anisotropy ( $\omega_{p,\perp} / \omega_{p,\parallel} \approx 0.62$ ). The observation of the AMRO shows the presence of a small closed orbit, which can be assigned to the overlapped area of the large FS. This demonstrates that the incommensurate anion potential is crucial to remove the degeneracy of the energy bands on the zone boundary. The magnetoresistance peak in the fields applied within the conducting layers shows an unusually large interlayer transfer integral ( $t_{\perp} \approx 1$ meV) among organic superconductors.

Notes: Summary New type hypoxic cell sensitizers, N1, N10-bis(4-nitrobenzoyl)spermidine (1) and N1,N14-bis(4-nitrobenzoyl)-spermine (2), have been developed. These compounds were shown to be more effective radiosensitizers to hypoxic cells than misonidazole (3).

Notes: Summary The radiosensitization brought about by oridonin, one of theRabdosia diterpenoids, alone or in combination with misonidazole, was investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. The enhancement ratio of 1.92 was obtained when 0.01 mM oridonin and 1 mM misonidazole were administered to hypoxic cells under radiation. The enhancement ratios of oridonin and misonidazole for hypoxic cells were 1.16 and 1.59 respectively. Hence, a supra-additive effect was obtained by the combined treatment with these two drugs. Under aerobic conditions, no effect of 0.01 mM oridonin on the radiosensitization caused by misonidazole was observed.

Notes: Abstract Adsorption of nitrogen on Li or Ca exchanged Faujasite at various Si/Al mole ratios (1.00, 1.23, and 1.69) and exchange levels (0 to nearly 100%) has been measured at 298 K. Nitrogen capacities were compared with the positions of Li and Ca. It has been demonstrated that Li at site III and Ca at site II adsorb nitrogen, and nitrogen capacities depend on Li per unit cell in Li-Faujasite and Ca per unit cell in Ca-Faujasite regardless of Si/Al.

Notes: Summary In the activated sludge treatment plant of Onoda City, bulking has often been caused by filamentous bacteria, types 021 N and I-2. Bulking disappeared when Trochilioides recta increased in the mixed liquor of the aeration tank. T.-recta was observed to ingest types 021 N or I-2. It may therefore be anticipated that this type of bulking could be controlled by T. recta.

Notes: Abstract The electron trap parameters in semiconducting CdS single crystals were obtained by admittance spectroscopy on its hetero- and Schottky junctions, and the trap depths obtained were 0.065, 0.09, 0.15 0.20, and 0.40 eV. The capture cross-section of the shallowest trap on the Cd-face of the crystals was about 10−19 cm2, one order smaller than that of the bulk crystal. The resolving power of the employed method was about 50 meV to distinguish the two traps with different depths. The results of the computer simulation of this method suggested that the trap can be determined when the trap density is at least one order lower than the donor density. The calculated density of the each trap was 1×1015 cm−3 for the shallowest trap and 2×1016 cm−3 for the remaining traps, respectively.

Notes: Summary Neonatal oestrogen treatment results in the development of vaginal cancers in the mouse. A morphological sign which probably indicated early invasion of altered vaginal cells into the stroma through gaps in the basal lamina was first seen at 10 months of age in neonatally oestrogenized C57Black mice. Prior to this, a decrease in the numbers of cellular attachment organelles such as half desmosomes and desmosomes was observed by 3 months.
