Notes: Abstract The mechanics of retraction of polymeric fibers imbedded in a polymeric matrix was analyzed. The shape evolution was described using a one-dimensional equation of equilibrium representing a balance between interfacial tension and viscous resistance. Microscopic tracking of polystyrene fibers in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix was performed and compared with the data for the reverse material combination. The analysis of hydrodynamic and viscous factors was conducted using experimental results. It was found that the model provides an adequate description for the micromechanics of imbedded fibers. A characteristic time scale for the retraction was obtained.

Notes: Abstract Application of the methodology of Pade approximants to a Taylor expansion of the inverse Langevin function led to an accurate analytical expression. The approximation, retaining a finite extendibility of the Langevin spring, enables a convenient analysis of experimental data and analytical manipulations of material models.

Notes: Abstract The multiple-scattering effects on laser pulses transmitted through and scattered by clouds and aerosol layers were calculated and discussed by several authors. Special attention has been given to the case of double-scattering and its effect on lidar returns. Contrary to the body of literature on the theory of multiple scattering, very few experimental works were conducted under controlled and well-defined conditions. This is especially true for the scattering properties at a given scattering angle as a function of the wavelength. In this work, scattering calculations developed by the group and theoretical laboratory measurements of the multiple scattering as a function of wavelength for two values of optical depth are presented.

Notes: Abstract The dynamics of optical filaments in broad aperture semiconductor lasers was studied. We use the model where one longitudinal mode is taken into account. The spectrum and the instabilities of lateral modes joined with the above mentioned longitudinal mode were investigated. The structures arise due to instability of various number of lateral modes. On the background of these modes we found a new type of modulation with a frequency depending on the laser aperture width. This frequency is smaller than the electron-photon resonance one. The existence of the modulation was confirmed by experimental investigations of broad aperture laser noise spectra.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical reduction ofN-nitroso-2-methylindoline toN-amino-2-methylindoline is studied experimentally using a batch stirred-tank electrochemical reactor. The influence of important parameters such as temperature, specific electrode area, hydrodynamics of the electrolyte, and initial reactant concentration are examined to quantify their effect on the overall process selectivity. It is shown that the product yield is very sensitive to these parameters due to the complex chemical reaction sequence coupled with the desired heterogeneous electrochemical reaction.

Notes: Abstract Geocoris punctipes (Say), a predaceous lygaeid not previously docmented as a whitefly predator, was tested in the laboratory as a natural enemy of the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.). Its stalking behavior with whiteflies as prey was similar to that observed with aphids. A previously unobserved behavior was noted that involves the predators using salivary secretions to fasten the wings of prey to various surfaces, allowing labial probing and feeding. Prey consumption as a function of prey number appeared to follow the pattern of the Holling type II functional response. Handling time per prey item ranged from about 180 to 240 seconds. No changes were observed in handling time devoted to earlier versus later catches. Nutritional quality of whiteflies was measured using crude protein, lipids and carbohydrates as criteria. Performance, in terms of predator behavior, total daily handling time, functional response, energy budget and nutritional quality all support the hypothesis that G. punctipes is a promising candidate for biological control of sweet potato whiteflies.

Notes: Abstract A method, based on Tits' work and involving an idea of M. Ronan, is developed in order to recognize certain geometries which are locally buildings of classical type as quotients of buildings. Two applications are treated in detail showing that every finite nearly classical near polygon must be a dual polar space and that in the finite case of Cooperstein's theorem characterizing geometries of Lie type D n , the hypotheses can be weakened considerably.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we exploit the relations between near polygons with lines of size 3 and Fischer spaces to classify near hexagons with quads and with lines of size three. We also construct some infinite families of near polygons.
