Notes: Abstract The relativistic formulations for the equations which describe the motion of a near-Earth satellite are compared for two commonly used coordinate reference systems (RS). The discussion describes the transformation between the solar system barycentric RS and both the non-inertial and inertial geocentric RSs. A relativistic correction for the Earth's geopotential expressed in the solar system barycentric RS and the effect of geodesic precession on the satellite orbit in the geocentric RS are derived in detail. The effect of the definition of coordinate time on scale is also examined. A long-arc solution using 3 years of laser range measurements of the motion of the Lageos satellite is used to demonstrate that the effects of relativity formulated in the geocentric RS and in the solar system barycentric RS are equivalent to a high degree of accuracy.

Notes: Abstract. Recent developments in computer-assisted radiographic absorptiometry (RA) and quantitative ultrasound techniques (QUS) provide readily accessible and relatively inexpensive methods for assessing bone mineral status. However, few population-based studies have investigated the ability of RA and ultrasound to predict fracture risk prospectively. We explored the ability of RA and QUS to predict fracture risk among 560 postmenopausal women from the Hawaii Osteoporosis Study; average follow-up was 2.7 years. An incident vertebral fracture was defined as a decrease of more than 15% in vertebral heights on subsequent films. Self-reported nonspine fractures were verified by medical records. The prospective associations of vertebral fractures, nonspine fractures, and any (spine or nonspine) fractures with bone measurements were examined using logistic regression, adjusting for age. Both phalangeal bone mineral density (BMD) and metacarpal BMD, measured using RA, predicted future fracture risk. The age-adjusted odds ratios (corresponding to 1 SD decrease in BMD) for vertebral fractures, nonspine fractures, and any fractures were 3.41, 1.50, and 1.91, respectively, for phalangeal BMD, and 1.71, 1.49, 1.55, respectively for metacarpal BMD. Calcaneal broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) also showed significant association with fracture risk, with age-adjusted odds ratios of 1.50, 1.89, and 1.72 for vertebral fractures, nonspine fractures, and any fractures, respectively. We conclude that hand RA and calcaneal BUA are significant predictors of nonspine fracture, vertebral fracture, and overall fracture risk. The attractive features of these techniques, such as portability, relatively low cost, and ease of use, make them promising alternatives to conventional bone measurement techniques used for the assessment of fracture risk.

Notes: Abstract Analyses of the latest Jurassic Santiago Peak volcanic rocks from the western zone of the Peninsular Ranges batholith reveal the existence of two independent groups; one comprising basalts and andesites of the island arc tholeiitic series, and the second made up of the dacites and rhyolites of the subalkaline (calc-alkaline?) series or silicic series. The basalts and andesites have V, Co and Ni contents similar to those estimated for the residual melts in equilibrium with the Peninsular Ranges gabbros. This fact together with the tholeiitic nature of the gabbros and the intimate spatial and temporal relationship between the SPV and the gabbros suggests that the basalts and andesites had a common origin with the gabbros. The mafic volcanism and plutonism seems to have occurred in a youthful island arc and the silicic volcanism in a mature island arc or a continental margin.

Notes: Abstract We discuss a programming methodology based on the use of multilinear algebra to design and implement parallel algorithms for linear computations. In particular, we review techniques for implementing expressions involving the tensor product. We then show how the tensor product can be used to formulate Strassen's matrix multiplication algorithm. We report on our experience using this formulation and these techniques to implement a parallel version of Strassen's matrix multiplication algorithm on the Encore Multimax.

Notes: Abstract  A temperate phage was induced by mitomycin C from Leuconostoc oenos strain 1002, a New Zealand isolate. The phage has an isometric head (52±3 nm) with a tail (210±10 nm) and gives a lytic burst size of 25 when grown on a sensitive strain. Three major structural proteins of 43, 30 and 14 kDa are visible by Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). A restriction map of the 36-kb genome was determined. Commercially available L. oenos strains PSU-1, ML34 and Lco23 and 46.6% of New Zealand isolates were sensitive to the phage.

Notes: Abstract: A nonoverlapping domain decomposition iterative procedure based on Robin transmission conditions applicable to elliptic boundary problems was first introduced by P.~L.~Lions and later discussed by a number of authors under the assumption that the weighting of the flux and the trace of the solution in the Robin interface condition be independent of the iterative step number. Recently, the authors [6] studied a finite difference method for a Dirichlet problem and introduced a cycle of weights for the flux in this interface condition and proved that an acceleration in the convergence rate similar to that occurring for alternating-direction iteration using a cycle of pseudo-time steps results. The objects of this paper are to describe an analogous procedure for a mixed finite element approximation for a model Neumann problem and to consider an overlapping subdomain of the iteration, while retaining the variable parameter cycle. It will be shown that a greater acceleration of the iteration can be obtained by combining overlap and the parameter cycle than by the separate use of either.

Notes: Abstract The chromosome constitutions of 15 forms (2 acrodonts and 13 pleurodonts) of amphisbaenians belonging to two families and eight genera were studied. The diploid chromosome numbers varied from 30 to 44 with the number of chromosome arms (FN) ranging from 42 to 60. The karyotypes of 12 forms all contained 6 pairs of macrochromosomes with similar morphology and 9 to 12 pairs of microchromosomes. The remaining three species had a higher diploid number (40–44) and a wide variation in chromosome morphology. Karyotype variations were found in the same family, even in the same genus. The lengths of the 6 pairs of macrochromosomes in 5 of the 12 forms were measured and compared. This disclosed similarities in the mean lengths, relative lengths, and arm ratios of those forms. — Chromosome patterns found in the present study support, in general, the classification of amphisbaenians derived from analysis of morphological characters.

Notes: Abstract A Boundary Element Method (BEM)-based inverse algorithm utilizing the iterative regularization method, i.e. the Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM), is used to solve the Inverse Heat Conduction Problem (IHCP) of estimating the unknown transient boundary heat flux in a multi-dimensional domain with arbitrary geometry. Results show that the advantages of applying the CGM in the inverse calculations lie in that the major difficulties in (i) choosing a suitable quadratic norm, (ii) determining a proper regularization order and (iii) determining the optimal smoothing (or regularization) coefficient in the conventional Regularization Method (RM) are avoided.
