    Notes: Abstract Most recent researches into an object oriented design approach for the development of real-time Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) applications have concentrated on object identification and object classification. These techniques, however, may only be considered as an object-based paradigm. In the true object-oriented paradigm, object characteristics such as data encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism must also be considered. This paper introduces a design paradigm for developing a SCADA system through the true object oriented design methodology. To complete the design, a hierarchical object-oriented design (HOOD) tree is used to map the physical shop floor layout to a logical layout for formulating the basic object hierarchy. The active components and control logic in the SCADA models are manipulated by a newly derived script language called CONTROL-C++ proposed by the author. To verify the proposed model, a newly designed software system is implemented and justified in terms of system completeness and soundness.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of planetary accretion in a jet stream is studied using the model developed by Alfvén and Arrhenius. We find that there are basically three types of planetary accretion: namely, fast process τ c 〈 τ i , slow process τ c ~ τ i and delayed process τ c 〉 τ i where τ c is the characteristic time of the occurrence of catastrophic accretion and τ i the time-scale of mass injection to the planetary system (≃3×108 yr). These different time scales of accretion are found to be closely related to the primordial thermal profiles and equatorial inclinations of the planets. Finally, Venus' retrograde rotational spin is shown to be a possible result of accretion process in a jet stream.

    Notes: Abstract It is argued that the typical nuclear region of a comet, under a variety of circumstances, consists of a central icy nucleus surrounded by an extended icy halo of grains forming a supplementary source for the observed atmospheric constituents. A complete hydrodynamic description of a neutral atmosphere corresponding to such a distributed source model when the predominant ‘parent-molecule’ is H2O is given, and numerical results corresponding to two different velocity distributions of the icy halo consistent with smaller and larger grains are computed. The applicability and relevance of these models are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Schubart's model of a planar, elliptic restricted three-body problem is used to study the orbital motion of the Hilda asteroids from thePalomar-Leiden Survey. The 3:2 resonant coupling to Jupiter of some of these small asteroids are found to be stable. However, some of the small asteroids with absolute magnitudeg〉15 have large amplitude of variation in their orbital elements in one libration period. Since the lifetime scales against catastrophic collision of the Hilda asteroids are estimated to be several times larger than those of the main belt objects, a significant portion of these resonant asteroids could be the original members of the Hilda group. From this point of view, it is suggested that such ‘size-dependence’ of resonant orbital motions might be the result of the cosmogonic effects ofjet stream accretion.

    Notes: Abstract Several arguments based on the orbital dynamics of the asteroids are used to support the idea that the original solar nebula might not necessarily be the Laplacian type of thin disk-like structure.     Notes: Abstract The origin of the high speed HCN jets observed in Comet Kohoutek (1973f) is considered. It is argued that the occurrence of these jets with Doppler shifts corresponding to velocities of ≈3–5 km s−1 with respect to the nucleus cannot be explained in terms of either (a) explosive outbursts of trapped sub-surface volatiles, (b) highly exothermic chemical reactions involving free radicals [or a combination of (a) and (b)] or (c) the outward expansion of the cometary atmosphere with additional heating. Instead, acceleration of the precursor ions of HCN by energetic electrons in the ionospheric current sheets or current arcs is suggested to play an important role. Also, a fraction of the HCN observed by electric discharges, associated with the ionosphere current system through the cometary atmosphere. It is not possible to make a realistic estimate of this fraction at the present time, but that it may be significant cannot be entirely excluded by the existing observations.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of a significant population of relic relativistic electrons - created at an early epoch of the Universe - has been invoked to explain the diffuse EUV emission excess observed in a number of galaxy clusters. While the postulated inverse Compton scattering of the 3° K background radiation by cosmic ray electrons might indeed be utilized as an important diagnostic tool for the physical nature of the intracluster cosmic rays, it is shown here that continuous generation plus reacceleration would be necessary if the conditions on the observed energy spectral distribution and energy supply rate are to be met in the case of clusters with large radio halos.

    Notes: Abstract The time evolution of interplanetary matter streams is studied using simple mathematical models, taking into account the effects of accretion and fragmentation. While the characteristic behaviour is determined essentiall by Λ0, the initial ratio of the accretion time scale to the internal collision time scale, a focussing following an initial expansion is generally observed. The relevance of the results to cosmogenic ‘Jet-Streams’ as well as present day meteor streams is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The electrodynamic model of generation of electric currents in the solar atmosphere, by means of twisting of emerging magnetic flux loops, is investigated with emphasis on the small-scaled EUV/X-ray bright points. It is found that the corresponding power input from such conversion of kinetic energy of the turbulent photospheric plasma into magnetic energy could amount to about 25% of the total energy flux of the solar wind and solar radiation. However, if similar filamentary structures containing colder material are formed in abundance, the total energy budget would be correspondingly larger and the resulting mass injection phenomena may be related to the so-called coronal bullets observed in UV. These energetic features suggest that the coronal dynamics and heating could be dictated by plasma structures with angular sizes 〈0.1″–1″. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) mission will be essential in addressing these issues basic to solar corona and solar wind acceleration.

    Notes: Abstract Solar wind interactions with planetary bodies without intrinsic magnetic fields depend to a large extent on the electrical conductivities of the objects in question. If the combined (i.e., ionospheric and interior) electrical conductivities are large, as in the case of Venus, the solar wind interaction is strong due to the generation of a large electrical current flow. It is suggested here that a similar interaction may occur at some asteroids, if their interior conductivity can be approximated by the conductivities of carbonaceous or iron-bearing meteorites. This interaction, in turn, can be used as a tool for remote sensing of the asteroidal interior properties in a spacecraft mission to asteroids.
