Notizen: We have studied the orienting effect that an electric field has on the orbital motion of the pairs in superfluid 3He-B, using the orientation-dependent transverse NMR frequency shift as a probe. This method provides high resolution for studying the orienting effect for either sign of the orientational energy. Electric fields as high as 35,000 V/cm applied across the sample produced no measurable frequency shift at 0-, 10-, and 32-bar pressures. This gives upper limits to the orientational energy of 1.4 × 10\s-3, 1.0 × 10\s-3 and 4 × 10\s-4 times the values expected from simple theory.

Notizen: Abstract We present the first measurement of the thermal boundary conductance, 1/R B , between the U2D2 spin ordered solid and theB superfluid phases of3He. We find that 1/R B is exceedingly high, roughly seven orders of magnitude greater than that between sintered silver powder and liquid3He. ForT〈0.56 mK, 1/R B appeared to be thermally activated, i.e. 1/R B ∼exp(−ε/k B T), with ε=4.5(±0.5) mK, close to the superfluid gap energy. We also present a theory involving magnon-quasiparticle coupling as a model to explain the experimental observations.

Notizen: Abstract The magnetic effects predicted by Leggett and Rice for Fermi liquids in the collisionless regime have been verified. Spin-echo measurements are reported which demonstrate the existence of spin waves and undamped spin currents in liquid3He and dilute3He-4He solutions. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical expressions of Leggett and Rice, and values of the Fermi liquid interaction parameter $$\lambda = \left[ {1/(1 + F_0^a )} \right] - \left\{ {1/[1 + (F_1^a /3)]} \right\}$$ are derived for three samples: liquid3He atP=0 and 27 atm, and a 6.4%3He-4He solution. In addition, some techniques for direct observation of individual spin-wave modes are explored and the results reported.

Notizen: Over the past 20 years our understanding of cooperative magnetic phenomena in solid 3He has expanded greatly. Starting from the concept of atomic exchange, the author explains how early experiments led to the abandonment of the naive Heisenberg nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian, in favor of a multiple exchange model. He then describes the detailed experimental picture of the spin-ordered phases which has developed over the past decade, and the successes and failures of the multiple exchange model to explain the experimental results. Today solid 3He is a powerful model magnetic system for extending our general understanding of magnetic order, and should continue to play an important role for many years to come.

Notizen: Abstract We have made NMR studies of thin films of pure3He adsorbed on Graf oil. Such films were cooled to ∼ 75 μK, an order of magnitude colder than previous workers could attain. In particular, we measured the magnetization of the solid second atomic layer, (M2), which displays antiferromagnetic (AFM) behavior at low densities and ferromagnetic (FM) behavior at high densities. At both AFM and FM densities, we could measure M2 at temperatures well below the exchange energy (J). Our data at the AFM densities may support a proposed model of that phase. At the FM densities, we have found that M2 (T = 0) is linear in second layer density (p2) and rises by a factor of ∼7 with a 6% increase in ϱ2 and less than a factor of 2 increase in the apparent value of J, suggesting that the FM phase coexists with a lower density AFM phase. Our high temperature (T 〉J) data also support such a two phase model. We find that M2 follows the expected behavior for a 2 dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet down to T ≪ J, the first experimental observation of such behavior. We also confirmed the importance of k = 0 spin waves in determining the low temperature behavior of such a system. The NMR lineshape in the FM phase also displayed shifts and broadening due to demagnetization effects which support the model of two phase coexistence.

Notizen: Abstract We present data on the nonequilibrium ac dielectric response of amorphous insulators to the application of a quasi-dc mechanical strain field below 150 mK. The behavior of the system after perturbation by a strain field is analogous to that observed after the application of a dc electrical field. In the current theoretical framework the nonequilibrium response is due to a time dependent density of states correction resulting from TLS-TLS interactions. In addition, an anomalous hysteresis in fast strain and electric field sweeps is reported which may represent the predicted dynamical response of relaxing independent TLS.

Notizen: Abstract The absorption signal occasionally found missing in the middle of resonance absorption lines in NMR is explained on the basis of a textural singularity of the anisotropy axis in the B phase of 3 He. The singularity combines with the field gradient present to give rise to an asymmetric hole in the signal with a singularity on the high-frequency side. The line shapes and temperature dependence are predicted and agree well with experiment. Spin waves are found to be trapped by the potential well formed by the texture and the field gradient. The frequency intervals predicted for the spin waves also agree well with experiment.

Notizen: Abstract Using the capacitance of a glass sample as its own thermometer, we have measured the thermal conductivity of two glasses below 700mK. This technique avoids any thermal boundary resistance between the thermometer and the sample. In addition, since the loss tangent goes to zero as the temperature is lowered, the amount of heat dissipated in a capacitive measurement is very small at low temperatures. We were able to measure the thermal conductivity at temperatures which were previously experimentally inaccessible and found that the thermal conductivity, κ, scales as T 1.86 down to 10mK, in agreement with the two-level system model.
