Notes: Abstract Activin (βAβA, βAβB and βBβB) is a dimeric protein that belongs to the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of growth factors and is involved in the regulation of many physiological and developmental processes. Recently, we have demonstrated that porcine activin stimulated goldfish gonadotropin-II (GTH-II) and growth hormone (GH) secretion from dispersed pituitary cells in static culture and pituitary fragments in perifusion. The action of activin in the goldfish is unique in that it has an acute stimulatory effect on the secretion of GTH-II and GH, whereas in mammals activin usually exhibits long-term stimulatory actions on FSH secretion. The action mechanism of activin is different from that of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). Using domain-specific antibodies against mammalian activin subunits, we subsequently demonstrated the existence of immunoreactive activin subunits (βA and βB) in the goldfish ovary, testis, pituitary and brain, suggesting endocrine, paracrine and autocrine roles for activin in the regulation of goldfish reproduction. Both activin βA and βB subunits have been cloned from goldfish genome by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using the PCR fragments as probes, we have cloned a full length cDNA coding for activin βB subunit from the goldfish ovary. Both activin βA and βB subunits show high homology to those of other vertebrates with the βB subunit much more conserved (93 and 98% identity with human and zebrafish βB subunit, respectively). The identity of the cloned βB subunit was further confirmed by expression in the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells and detection of the specific activity of activin in the culture medium. The messenger RNA of activin βB subunit is expressed in a variety of goldfish tissues including ovary, testis, brain, pituitary, kidney and liver, suggesting a wide range of physiological roles for activin in the goldfish. We have also cloned a full length cDNA coding for the activin Type IIB receptor from the goldfish ovary, suggesting that activin may have paracrine or autocrine actions on the ovarian functions. The identity of the cloned receptor was confirmed by specific binding of125 I-activin on COS-1 cells transfected with the cloned Type IIB receptor.

Notes: Summary The paper concerns the sensitivity of the regional mesoscale model (MM4) to a moisture transport algorithm with different accuracies, and the effective improvement of the capability to simulate meso-scale synoptical event by using the revised version of the algorithm. The two advective schemes of second-order moment conservational Prather scheme (PRS hereinafter) and the polynomial-fitted fourth-order Bott scheme and the upstream scheme (UPS) are introduced into the MM4 to calculate moisture transport in order to provide other types of the algorithm with different accuracies for choice in addition to the original B grid second-order central scheme. Of the three schemes, the first two ensure the positive definite character with high accuracy (almost no numerical disspation and computational dispersion); and the last one also keeps the positive definite feature, but possesses stronger capability of numerical dissipation. Case studies have been undertaken of several rainstorm and typhoon events by virtue of the different-accuracy moisture transport algorithm, other things being the same. Results reveal great differences between them. An significant improvement is found in determining meso-scale synoptic system structure, rain cluster activity, rainstorm belt and its center, severity and its persistence, and the false alarm of or failure to report subrainstorm center when the PRS scheme is employed. Obviously, these differences and improvement are only due to moisture re-distribution for different schemes of moisture transport and the related variation of latent heat. The paper investigates the influences of different numerical schemes. The high accuracy and positive solution PRS application which produces a significant improvement in the model result, demonstrating the sensitivity of the model to moisture distribution in the model represents an important measure to improve the simulation by means of revising the numerically calculating method.

Notes: Abstract We apply the Batalin-Fradkin algorithm combined with the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky formalism to the generalized Schwinger model. We obtain the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin invariant action showing that the auxiliary fields introduced in the algorithm turn into the Wess-Zumino scalar.

Notes: Abstract In this work, we present a new, computationally simple scheme (termed multi-shot approach) to separate and detect multiuser signals in an asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) communications system. By exploring the structure inherent in the matrix decomposition of properly arranged data, obtained from multi-shot matched filtering, we propose a near-far resistant multiuser detector. The proposed multiuser detector combines the multiple snapshots of matched filter outputs through a matrix filtering and de-biasing processing, revealed from the structure inherent in properly arranged data, prior to the final stage of decision making. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the newly proposed computationally efficient detection scheme in comparison with other existing methods of comparable complexity.

Notes: Abstract Neem oil deterred feeding by pear sawfly, Caliroa cerasi L., larvae (Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae), both in choice and in no-choice cherry leaf disk bioassays. Deterrence was greater in the choice tests, with 50% inhibition occurring at 0.49% aqueous neem oil compared with 1.11% in the no-choice tests. Antifeedant activity towards pear sawfly larvae is slightly less than has been observed for Lepidoptera, but is higher than deterrence to other insects such as aphids. Topical application of neem oil to sawfly larvae resulted in reduced feeding, increased mortality, and a trend towards slower development. Most larval mortality after neem treatment resulted from incomplete subsequent moults. The potential utilization of neem insecticides for control of pear sawfly in tree fruit pest management is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a high power Nd:YAG laser system is described, which consists of an actively-passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser oscillator with variable subnanosecond pulsewidths (200 ps to 1 ns), a Pockels-cell shutter and a coaxial four-pass Nd:YAG amplifier. With the oscillator operating in the colliding pulse regime, and a BDN dye film as the saturable absorber, and an acousto-optic modulator as the active modelocker, we have achieved a shot-to-shot stability of the pulse-train amplitude 〈 ±4%. For a 0.1 mJ, 200 ps laser pulse, we obtained four-pass amplification of 7 × 102 with a pump energy of 106 J.

Notes: Abstract In the square-wave PFM system for transmission of TV programmes through optical fibres, square-wave PFM pulses are generated at the transmitter with a relatively low centre frequency, whereas double-frequency equal-width narrow pulses are produced in the receiver before the demodulating low-pass filter, at both the rising and falling edges of the transmitted pulses. The use of the frequency-doubling technique in such a system results in narrow transmission bandwidth and high receiver sensitivity, thus prolonging the transmission distance significantly as compared with ordinary PFM. In the experiment, the system is operated at 1.3 μm with multimode fibre having bandwidth 700 MHz km, a laser diode as optical source and a PIN/FET as detector. It can effectively transmit the high-quality broadcast TV programme with accompanying sound channel to a distance of 50.7 km. Experimental results are: receiver sensitivity −40 dB m, weighted SNR for video 59.3 dB, differential gain and differential phase less than 1% and 1°, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A nickel(II) complex of the pyridine-2-aldehyde Schiff base of S-methyldithiocarbazate (HNNS) has been synthesized and characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectra. The crystal structure of the complex has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic, space P21/c, with a = 14.092(2), b = 16.886(2), c = 8.857(2)Å; β = 105.78(3) °, V = 2028.2(6) Å3, and Z = 4. The nickel atom is octahedrally coordinated by two uninegatively charged tridentate Schiff base in a mer-configuration via the pyridine nitrogen atom, azomethine nitrogen atom, and mecaptide sulfur atom.

Notes: Abstract Although zeolites such as NaY and 13X adsorb CO2 much more than CO, the adsorption amount of CO2 and CO can be reversed if the zeolites are modified with CuCl. When zeolite NaY or 13X is mixed with CuCl and heated, high CO adsorption selectivity and capacity can be obtained. Isotherms show the adsorbents have CO capacity much higher than CO2. This is because CuCl has dispersed onto the surface of the zeolites to form a monolayer after the heat treatment and the monolayer dispersed CuCl can provide tremendous Cu(I) to selective adsorb CO and inhibit the CO2 adsorption. The monolayer dispersion of CuCl is confirmed by XRD and EXAFS studies. The loading of CuCl on the zeolites has a threshold below which the CuCl forms monolayer after heating and crystalline phase of CuCl can not be detected by XRD. An adsorbent of CuCl/NaY with CuCl content closed to the monolayer capacity shows very high CO selective adsorbability for CO2, N2, H2 and CH4. At temperature higher than room temperature, the adsorbent has even better CO selectivity for CO2. Using the adsorbent, a single-stage 4 beds PSA process, working at 70°C and 0.4 MPa to 0.013 MPa, can obtain CO product with purity 〉99.5% and yield 〉85%.

Notes: Abstract The catalytic performances of Mn-based catalysts have been investigated for the oxidative dehydrogenation of both ethane (ODE) and propane (ODP). The results show that a LiCl/MnOx/PC (Portland cement) catalyst has an excellent catalytic performance for oxidative dehydrogenation of both ethane and propane to ethylene and propylene, more than 60% alkanes conversion and more than 80% olefins selectivity could be achieved at 650°C. In addition, the results indicate that Mn-based catalysts belong to p-type semiconductors, the electrical conductivity of which is the main factor in influencing the olefins selectivity. Lithium, chlorine and PC in the LiCl/MnOx/PC catalyst are all necessary components to keep the excellent catalytic performance at a low temperature.
