Summary Using a recentquantum-mechanical treatment of charged-beam propagation in which the emittance plays the role of Planck's constant, we construct a wave theory of the beam transport along guiding systems. We show that the distribution of a beam passing through quadrupole lenses can be described in terms of Gaussian beams. We discuss the role of Twiss parameters within this context and derive anABCD law for charged beam transport.
