Notizen: Abstract The construction of thermodynamic stability diagrams for the Fe-Cr-Al system is discussed. The constructed diagrams are used to predict materials behavior at coal gasifier oxygen and sulfur potentials. Experiments are run to compare predicted results with experimental observations. Powder mixtures of FeS, Cr2O3, and Al2O3 are used to observe the formation of the iron-chromia and iron-alumina spinels. The spinels are observed at both 871 and 982° C. The formation of an alumina spinel is observed only on the Fe-10Al alloy, whereas no iron-chromia spinel is found on the Fe-Al-Cr alloys.

Notizen: Abstract The construction of thermodynamic stability diagrams for the Fe-Cr-Ni systems is discussed. The constructed diagrams are used to predict materials behavior at coal gasifier oxygen and sulfur potentials. Some preliminary experiments are run to compare predicted results with experimental observations. Powder mixtures of FeS, NiS, and Cr 2 O 3 are used to observe the formation of the iron-chromia and nickel-chromia spinels at 871° C. Only the iron-chromia spinel was observed. No spinels were observed on 310 stainless steel samples exposed to the same environment.

Notizen: Abstract Submandibular gland responses to sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve stimulation were studied in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Morphologically, the acinar cells in control glands were relatively uniform in size and contained electron-lucent granules. The granular ducts were distinguished by the presence of electron-dense granules. With the exception of intracellular lipid droplets and the presence of a few autophagosomes in diabetic glands, no consistent differences in acinar cell structure were observed. In contrast, the diameter of the granular ducts and the granule content of their cells were less in diabetic glands. At 3 weeks sympathetic flow rate, salivary protein concentration, and total protein output were unaffected by diabetes. Sympathetic flow rate was greater at 3 months, and the concentration of protein in the saliva was lower. In 6-month diabetic rats flow rate remained increased, but protein concentration and total protein output were reduced. The decrease in salivary protein concentration at 3 and 6 months was accompanied by a reduction in secretory granule release from acinar and granular duct cells. No consistent differences in flow rate, protein concentration, protein output, or secretory granule release were observed following parasympathetic stimulation. We conclude that the effects of diabetes on nerve-stimulated flow rate and protein release depend on the duration of diabetes and the type of stimulation, and are independent of one another.

Notizen: Abstract We used a simulation model of forest dynamics to examine the ecological significance of the complex interactions among site conditions, tree growth, and the development of a thick forest floor moss layer found in many boreal forests. To examine the effect of site conditions on moss growth and forest dynamics, we simulated the dynamics of several different forest sites in the uplands of interior Alaska. Then we used a cold, wet permafrost site to examine the ecological consequences of direct moss and tree interactions. Our analyses revealed a tightly coupled system in which forest succession was highly sensitive to the interactions among site conditions, mosses, and trees. The effect of mosses on the soil thermal regime was a particularly important feedback. Direct interactions between mosses and trees that affected the development of a thick forest floor layer were also important. In particular, shading of moss by trees, reduced tree regeneration on moss-covered soils, and reduced moss growth with open forest canopies were also important determinants of forest succession. These complex feedbacks ensure that an ecosystem approach is needed to understand the ecology of boreal forests.
