    Notes: Burkholderia sp. AA1 isolated from a diesel fuel-contaminated site degraded toluene, as well as a wide range of alkanes from decane (C8) to pentacosane (C25) as sole carbon and energy sources. This strain also utilized m-toluate, p-toluate, o-toluate, and m-cresol as sole carbon and energy sources. Toluene- and toluate-grown cells showed catechol 2,3-dioxygenase activity and indole oxidation activity that is exhibited by some toluene oxygenation enzymes. The catechol 2,3-dioxygenase gene (catB) was cloned and sequenced. Its deduced amino acid sequence is analogous to the extradiol dioxygenases cloned from a variety of microorganisms. A DNA fragment containing the genes for the indole oxidation activity was cloned and sequenced. A seven-gene cluster designated as tbhABCDEFG was identified. Significant similarities were found with multicomponent monooxygenase systems for toluene, benzene and phenol from different bacterial strains.     Notes: Abstract: Three new bands in 174Ta have been identified by using the 160Gd(19F,5n) reaction at beam energies of 87 MeV and 96 MeV. Nilsson configurations are assigned to these bands. In the 9/2−[514]p+5/2−[512]n band, the AB neutron crossing occurs at a rotational frequency of 0.30 MeV. This is indicative of the disappearance of the evidence for a reduction in neutron pair correlations.

    Notes: Abstract A rotational band of160Lu was identified for the first time through the144Sm(19F,3n)160Lu reaction with a beam energy of 90 MeV. A γ-γ-BGO coincidence experiment was performed using five HpGe-BGO Compton-Suppressed spectrometers and a 14 elements ball of BGO detectors. The highest spin of the band with π9/2−[514]⊗v1/2+[660] could be pushed up to 21−, and it shows the feature of an anomalous signature splitting.

    Notes: Abstract The yrast band in the doubly odd156Tm nucleus was studied through144Sm(19F,2p5n)156Tm reaction at beam energy of 105MeV. Several high-spin states of156Tm were identified and the highest spin of the band with configurationπ7/2−[523] ⊗v1/2+[660] could be built up to spin 25ħ. The level structure shows the onset of a non- or weak collectivity which generally appears at neutron number of 87 in neutron-deficient rare-earth nuclei.

In the non-symmetric gravitational theory (NGT) the space-time metric $g_{\mu\nu}$ departs from the flat-space Minkowski form $\eta_{\mu\nu}$ in such a way that it is no longer symmetric, i.e. $g_{\mu\nu} \ne g_{\nu\mu}$ . We find that in the most conservative such scenario coupled to quantum field theory, which we call minimally non-symmetric quantum field theory (MNQFT), there are experimentally measurable consequences similar to those from non-commutative quantum field theory (NCQFT). This can be expected from the Seiberg-Witten map which has recently been interpreted as equating gauge theories on non-commutative space-times with those in a field-dependent gravitational background. In particular, in scattering processes such as the pair annihilation $e^ + e^- \to \gamma \gamma$ , both theories make the same striking prediction that the azimuthal cross section oscillates in $\phi$ . However the predicted number of oscillations differs in the two theories: MNQFT predicts between one and four, whereas NCQFT has no such restriction.

    Notes: Abstract. We study comparator networks for selection, merging, and sorting that output the correct result with high probability, given a random input permutation. We prove tight bounds, up to constant factors, on the size and depth of probabilistic (n,k)-selection networks. In the case of (n, n/2)-selection, our result gives a somewhat surprising bound of $\Theta(n \log \log n)$ on the size of networks of success probability in $[\delta, 1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)]$ , where δ is an arbitrarily small positive constant, thus comparing favorably with the best previously known solutions, which have size $\Theta(n\log n)$ . We also prove tight bounds, up to lower-order terms, on the size and depth of probabilistic merging networks of success probability in $[\delta, 1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)]$ , where δ is an arbitrarily small positive constant. Finally, we describe two fairly simple probabilistic sorting networks of success probability at least $1-1/\mbox{poly}(n)$ and nearly logarithmic depth.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature ranges for growth of Streptococcus mutans GS-5 and S. sobrinus 6715 were found to be very narrow, from about 30 to 47 °C, with optimal growth around 37 °C. Thus, the organisms showed little potential to grow in the environment outside of the animal host. In contrast wider ranges were found for Enterococcus hirae, S. rattus and S. sanguis. Detailed study of S. mutans GS-5 showed that energetic coupling, reflected in yields of biomass per mol of glucose utilized, were not greatly affected by changes in temperature within the growth range. However, since glycolysis occurred over a wider temperature range (about 10 to 52 °C) than growth, yield values dropped to zero at temperatures above or below the growth range. The temperature range for glycolysis could be related to temperature sensitivity of the phosphoenolpyruvate: sugar phosphotransferase system for sugar uptake. F-ATPases were active over a similar range of temperatures, but with a broad optimal range from about 30 to 50 °C. Proton permeability of S. mutans increased steadily with temperature in a manner similar to that of other mesophilic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. Growth of the bacteria in media supplemented with various fatty acids had major effects on proton permeabilities but the effects were not well reflected by changes in growth or glycolysis of the bacteria. The overall conclusions were that S. mutans is a typical mesophile in relation to membrane and catabolic functions but its narrow temperature range for growth is related to temperature sensitivities of anabolic systems.

    Notes: Abstract.  The effect of different cleaning procedures on Si(1 1 1) wafers has been studied. A three-step cleaning process was used. The first two steps (thermal oxidation followed by RCA cleaning) were common to all samples. The final step involved rinsing in one of a set of HF/NH4F buffer solutions with a wide range of pH values. Three different surface techniques were used for characterizing the chemical condition and morphology of the treated surfaces: XPS (X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy), REM (Reflection Electron Microscopy) and SIMS (Secondary-Ion Mass Spectroscopy). It has been found that the pH value of an HF solution does significantly affect the etching rate and morphology of the Si(1 1 1) surface: For the same type of solution, the smaller the pH value, the higher the etching rate. Basic solutions with pH values larger than eight have a much weaker etching effect on the surface, which is contradictory to some previous reports. The most effective solutions for the etching of the Si(1 1 1) surface are the solutions of HF buffered by NH4F, with the pH in the range of 2–6. REM images indicate that the surface morphology after etching in the HF solution is strongly affected by the length of the etching time: Over-etching will roughen the surface. The SIMS data show that water rinsing in air during the cleaning process does speed up oxidation, but it is necessary to use water to clean off the residuals from the HF solutions.
