Notes: Abstract We study the convergence of rational interpolants with prescribed poles on the unit circle to the Herglotz-Riesz transform of a complex measure supported on [−π, π]. As a consequence, quadrature formulas arise which integrate exactly certain rational functions. Estimates of the rate of convergence of these quadrature formulas are also included.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present a technique to study the existence of rational solutions for systems of differential equations — for an ordinary differential equation, in particular. The method is relatively straightforward; it is based on a rationality characterisation that involves matrix Padé approximants. It is important to note that, when the solution is rational, we use formal power series “without taking into account” their circle of convergence; at the end of this paper we justify this. We expound the theory for systems of linear first-order ordinary differential equations in the general case. However, the main ideas are applied in numerical resolution of partial differential equations.

Notes: Abstract In many applications it is of major interest to decide whether a given formal power series with matrix-valued coefficients of arbitrary dimensions results from a matrix-valued rational function. As the main result of this paper we provide an answer to this question in terms of Matrix Padé Approximants of the given power series. Furthermore, given a matrix rational function, the “smallest” degrees of the matrix polynomials which represent it are not necessarily unique. Therefore we study a certain minimality-type, that is, minimum degrees. We aim to obtain all the minimum degrees for the polynomials which represent the function as equivalents. In addition, given that the rational representation of the function for the same pair of degrees need not be unique, we have obtained conditions to study the uniqueness of said representation. All the results obtained are presented graphically in tables setting out the above information. They lead to a number of properties concerning special structures, staired blocks, in the Padé Table.

Notes: Abstract Honda saline lake is located in an endorheic basin in the south of Spain. The lake is very shallow, with frequent seasonal drought and a high degree of unpredictability. It was sampled monthly during a relatively dry year (1994–1995, 5 months permanence). To establish a relationship between environmental variables (temperature, depth, salinity and conductivity), variables related to biological activity (organic matter, total solids suspension, and pH) and the planktonic community in the sampled months, various uni- and multivariate statistical methods were carried out. Dunaliella salina, D. viridis, and ciliates sp. 2 is the principal species group used to average out the dissimilarity between the samples. Multivariate analysis showed that salinity (as TDS), conductivity and pH made major and significant contributions to the explanation of the variance in the sample data.

Notes: Abstract Natural phytoplankton of Cabo Frio area was grown in 42 m-deep artificially upwelled seawater enriched with increasing concentrations of nitrogen or phosphorus. Respective values allowing maximum biomass, maximum uptake of initial reserve and maximum yield coefficient are rather conflicting. Notwithstanding, respective values of 75 µg at 1−1 nitrogen and 5 µg at 1−1 phosphorus, and therefore N:P = 15, appeared to be the best compromise for initial nutrient levels.

Notes: Abstract Light saturation curves of natural assemblages of phytoplankton at 4 stations in Cabo Frio coastal waters were examined and related to changes in environmental conditions, based on 263 experiments carried out weekly during two years. No differences in specific productivity at saturating light (Pm B ) between stations were detected. Global mean value of Pm B was 4.7 mgC mgChla −1 h−1 with a range from 0.50 to 15.29. Significant seasonal variations were not observed. Correlation and regression analysis attributed most of Pm B variation to temperature, salinity, nutrients and the phaeopigment: chlorophyll-a ratio.

Notes: Abstract The phytoplankton of the Matanza-Riachuelo river (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was studied for a period of 15 months together with different physical and chemical variables, along an increasingly eutrophic in character downstream. 281 taxa were recorded within a seasonal succession, among these 49 percent were euglenophyta, 25 percent bacillariophyta, 15 percent chlorophyta and 10 percent cyanophyta. Multivariate procedures included cluster analyses and ordination by PCA of both species and samples, and stepwise multiple regression analyses were employed to assess the impact of the pollution on the phytoplankton. The effect of the alteration was different in each studied site. With one exception, the changes in the community structure described herein involved modifications of the basic species composition. According to the species present, it was deduced that the main pollutant was the high concentration of organic matter. Results of the Matanza-Riachuelo, Reconquista, and Luján Rivers studies are further discussed.
