Notes: Summary Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) was applied to the analysis of the soluble proteins from grape musts, with protein separation based on hydrophobicity. The initial percentage and rate of increase of organic modifier were optimized using the Modified Simplex method. Both the qualitative and quantitative data in the chromatograms yielded information on the variety origin of grape musts.

Notes: Summary The meiotic identification of nine pairs of chromosomes at metaphase I of meiosis of Triticum aestivum (B genome, 4A and 7A) has been achieved using a Giemsa C-banding technique. As a result, the analysis of the pairing of each chromosome arm in disomic and monosomic intervarietal hybrids between ‘Chinese Spring’ and the Spanish cultivar ‘Pané 247’ could be carried out. Differences in the chiasmata frequencies per chromosome arm cannot be explained on the basis of relative arm lengths only. Possible effects of arm-to-arm heterochromatic differences on meiotic pairing are discussed.

Notes: Summary The meiotic behaviour of the amphiploid Hordeum chilense X Triticum turgidum conv. durum using a C-banding staining method is studied. Nine pairs of chromosomes at metaphase-1 (4A, 7A and the seven of the B genome) were identified and the remaining wheat chromosomes (1A, 2A, 3A, 5A and 6A) and seven of the chilense (1 to 7 H ch chromosomes) were assigned to its particular genome. A similar mean number of univalents from parental genomes (wheat and wild barley) were found. No meiotic pairing between chilense and turgidum chromosomes was detected. Differences in the meiotic behaviour per chromosome and amongst genomes are explained on the basis of cytomorphological and heterochromatin characteristics.

Notes: Summary The C-banding pattern of nine meiotic chromosomes of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) as described. In F1s of crosses between monosomics of ‘Chinese Spring’ and two Spanish wheat cultivars, univalent chromosomes were used to aid the recognition and analysis of the C-banding pattern for the individual chromosomes. The identification of one chromosome involved in one translocation in ‘Chinese Spring’ x ‘Pané 247’ has been made through heterochromatin bands observed in the chromosomes involved in multivalents.

Notes: Summary The nitrogen fraction from cheese, soluble in phosphotungstic acid has been analyzed by gel permeation and high performance liquid chromatography. Elution profiles of this fraction on Sephadex G-10 show that there are no peptides of molecular weight higher than 700 daltons. Six fractions have been obtained. The first one has the peptides and some amino acids. Fractions II to VI contains mostly free amino acids. Fraction I has been separated into many peaks by HPLC. Six or seven of these peaks are presumed to correspond to peptides.

Notes: Summary The interaction between some polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons of environmental concern, and sodium dodecylsulphate and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide in the presence of methanol, 2-propanol and n-butanol has been evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography using micellar mobile phases. Solute-micelle association constants have been determined for the compounds investigated. The results show that the addition of the alcohol to the mobile phase decreases the association constant values, methanol 〈2-propanol 〈n-butanol, relative to those in the absence of any additive.

Notes: Summary Sodium dodecyl sulphate, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether were investigated as mobile phases in the micellar liquid chromatography of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons of environmental concern. A wide range of surfactant concentrations were used and the retention parameters and distribution coefficients calculated. The trends in the retention data for the PAHs are discussed and several conclusions are presented concerning the partition coefficients when these surfactants are present in the mobile phase. Comparisons are made between the structural features of the compounds and their capacity factors, and the octanol/water partition coefficients are correlated with hydrophobicity for the PAHs studied.

Notes: Abstract We study the convergence of rational interpolants with prescribed poles on the unit circle to the Herglotz-Riesz transform of a complex measure supported on [−π, π]. As a consequence, quadrature formulas arise which integrate exactly certain rational functions. Estimates of the rate of convergence of these quadrature formulas are also included.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we present a technique to study the existence of rational solutions for systems of differential equations — for an ordinary differential equation, in particular. The method is relatively straightforward; it is based on a rationality characterisation that involves matrix Padé approximants. It is important to note that, when the solution is rational, we use formal power series “without taking into account” their circle of convergence; at the end of this paper we justify this. We expound the theory for systems of linear first-order ordinary differential equations in the general case. However, the main ideas are applied in numerical resolution of partial differential equations.

Notes: Abstract In many applications it is of major interest to decide whether a given formal power series with matrix-valued coefficients of arbitrary dimensions results from a matrix-valued rational function. As the main result of this paper we provide an answer to this question in terms of Matrix Padé Approximants of the given power series. Furthermore, given a matrix rational function, the “smallest” degrees of the matrix polynomials which represent it are not necessarily unique. Therefore we study a certain minimality-type, that is, minimum degrees. We aim to obtain all the minimum degrees for the polynomials which represent the function as equivalents. In addition, given that the rational representation of the function for the same pair of degrees need not be unique, we have obtained conditions to study the uniqueness of said representation. All the results obtained are presented graphically in tables setting out the above information. They lead to a number of properties concerning special structures, staired blocks, in the Padé Table.
