    Notes: Abstract The 64 most abundant species (≥10 cm dbh) in a 400×480 m plot of predominantly kerangas forest in Sarawak were individually investigated for two-dimensional pattern by spectral analysis using the basal areas of trees in 20×20 m contiguous quadrats. All species had individuals in the upper canopy. 30 species showed pattern with clumps. The most frequent scales of clump size were between 35 and 55 m across. Patterned species were less abundant in the plot, had a greater proportion of smaller (10–20 cm dbh) trees and had a lower ratio of upper to lower canopy trees than species without pattern. Trend across the plot between dipterocarp and kerangas forest types matched the change in soil from red-yellow podzol (oxisol and ultisol) to medium gleyic and bleached sand podzols (spodosol). However, soil differences and small scale (ca. 50 m) changes in topography did not account for patterns. The scale of pattern matches the size of gaps produced by windthrow. It is suggested that patterned species are light-demanding and grow from seeds in gaps, whereas non-patterned species are shade tolerant, growing within closed forest to sapling size and eventually maturing by filling smaller single tree gaps.

    Notes: Abstract Two-dimensional spectral analysis is a general interrogative technique for describing spatial patterns. Not only is it able to detect all possible scales of pattern which can be present in the data but it is also sensitive to directional components. Four functions are described: the autocorrelation function; the periodogram; and, the R- and Θ-spectra which respectively summarize the periodogram in terms of scale and directional components of pattern. The use of these functions is illustrated by their application to a simple wave pattern, a wave pattern with added noise, and patterns simulating competition and invasion processes.

    Notes: Abstract The basic leucine zipper (bZIP) proteins are one of the largest and most conserved groups of eukaryotic transcription factors/repressors. Two major subgroups among the plant bZIP proteins have been identified as G-box (CCACGTGG) or C-box (TGACGTCA) binding proteins based on their DNA binding specificity and the amino acid sequences of their basic regions. We have investigated how plant bZIP proteins determine their DNA binding specificity by mutation of the basic domain of the G-box-binding protein EmBP-1. Four subregions of the EmBP-1 basic domain that differ from the C-box-binding protein TGA1a were substituted singly or in combination with the corresponding regions of TGA1a. DNA binding experiments with the mutant proteins demonstrated that binding specificity of plant bZIP proteins is determined independently by two regions, the core basic region and the hinge region. These two regions have an additive effect on DNA binding specificity. PCR-assisted binding-site selections using key mutants demonstrated that only G-box and C-box binding specificity can be generated by combinations of amino acids in the basic domains of EmBP-1 and TGA1a. These results suggest that factorial contributions of the amino acid residues in the basic domain combine to determine DNA-binding specificity of bZIP proteins.

    Notes: Abstract International education and university study exchange programs are now widely established around the world. Yet little is known about possible cultural differences in international and local students' goals and perceptions, and about how international students adapt to the specific academic requirements of the host country. The mediating role of student's goals and perceptions, as well as the dynamic and adaptive nature of those cognitions have been emphasised in theories of self-regulation of learning and empirical research on student learning. The present study examined the extent to which international students' ways of thinking about learning, learning goals and perceptions of the usefulness of typical university study contexts differ from local students at the beginning of their study in the host university, and then become similar to that of local students after a period of time. Comparisons of matched groups of international students (from South-east Asia) and local (Australian) students revealed evidence of cultural/educational differences between their conceptualisation of goals at the beginning of their university study but this difference disappeared after one semester. At the start of their university study, South-east Asian students displayed higher levels of goals than local students, but neither group was certain yet which study settings would be most useful for achieving their personal goals. After one semester, South-east Asian students had become more like local students but the two groups' overall patterns of change over time were similar, providing further support for the view that the specific characteristics of study environments have a strong impact on students' learning. South-east Asian students' clear differentiation of the usefulness of typical study settings for the achievement of high vs low level goals however, contrasted with local students' undifferentiated view that individual study is the most useful form of learning.

    Notes: Abstract Data collected at 22 lake and stream sites under the UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network, established in 1988, are assessed. Non-marine sulphate concentrations in surface waters largely reflect the sulphur deposition gradient across the country. Time series analysis indicates an increase in non-marine sulphate concentrations at sites in SW Scotland, the Lake District and in Wales. No similar trends have been detected in deposition data for the same period. Predictions of water chemistry response at each site to the new UNECE sulphur protocol have been made using a long-term, dynamic acidification model (MAGIC). The results indicate that the agreed emissions reductions will lead to recovery at many sites over a 15–20 year timescale but will have little effect at the most impacted sites, within the next 15 years.

    Notes: Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is an activating ligand for the EGF receptor (HER1/ErbB1) and the high-affinity receptor for diphtheria toxin (DT) in its transmembrane form (proHB-EGF). HB-EGF was immunolocalized within human benign and malignant prostatic tissues, using monospecific antibodies directed against the mature protein and against the cytoplasmic domain of proHB-EGF. Prostate carcinoma cells, normal glandular epithelial cells, undifferentiated fibroblasts, and inflammatory cells were not decorated by the anti-HB-EGF antibodies; however, interstitial and vascular smooth muscle cells were highly reactive, indicating that the smooth muscle compartments are the major sites of synthesis and localization of HB-EGF within the prostate. In marked contrast to prostatic epithelium, proHB-EGF was immunolocalized to seminal vesicle epithelium, indicating differential regulation of HB-EGF synthesis within various epithelia of the reproductive tract. HB-EGF was not overexpressed in this series of cancer tissues, in comparison to the benign tissues. In experiments with LNCaP human prostate carcinoma cells, HB-EGF was similar in potency to epidermal growth factor (EGF) in stimulating cell growth. Exogenous HB-EGF and EGF each activated HER1 and HER3 receptor tyrosine kinases and induced tyrosine phosphorylation of cellular proteins to a similar extent. LNCaP cells expressed detectable but low levels of HB-EGF mRNA; however, proHB-EGF was detected at the cell surface indirectly by demonstration of specific sensitivity to DT. HB-EGF is the first HER1 ligand to be identified predominantly as a smooth muscle cell product in the human prostate. Further, the observation that HB-EGF is similar to EGF in mitogenic potency for human prostate carcinoma cells suggests that it may be one of the hypothesized stromal mediators of prostate cancer growth.     Notes: Investigations of chemically-blown vinyl foam systems, based on electrical grade plasticizers, have shown that the inclusion of 2,2′-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) propane (BPA) as an antioxidant results in color formation in the finished foam. Color formation appears to be due to interactions between BPA and the azodicarbonamide blowing agent. Metal ion(s) present in vinyl stabilizer/kickers are also shown to have an effect on color hue though not on color development per se. Mechanisms for the development of quinoidal and diazo color bodies, based on the reaction of BPA and azodicarbonamide are postulated. Based on these reaction mechanisms, it is shown that it is possible to choose an antioxidant that will not interact with azodicarbonamide. A rudimentary screening procedure is described for evaluating these systems.

    Notes: A biodegradable particulate composite bone cement consisting of a crosslinked gelatin matrix and tricalcium phosphate particles was implanted intraosseously in rabbits for up to 12 weeks. Cured cylindrical implants were inserted in holes drilled in the proximal tibial metaphysis. Sequential fluorochrome labeling and radiographs were done, and specimens were processed for decalcified and nondecalcified histology. At 4 weeks, the cross-sectional diameter of the implant was slightly greater than at implantation. There was considerable dissolution of the matrix and some new bone ingrowth. At 12 weeks, the diameter was reduced to half the original diameter and bone had grown throughout the matrix. In the distal femur, freshly mixed cement was used to stabilize an osteochondral fracture. Mechanical testing of the cement-stabilized fracture revealed a decrease in compressive strength and modulus at 4 weeks followed by an increase to greater than initial values at 12 weeks. Over time, the osteochondral fragment subsided into the underlying cement, but the subsidence did not correlate with mechanical strength. This osteochondral fracture model permits measurement of the overall material properties of a cement simultaneously weakened by resorption and reinforced by ingrowing bone.
