    Notes: Summary Sterilization of bioreactor media, to destroy viability of the indigenous microbial population, is normally accomplished by autoclaving, or heating with pressurized steam. However, simultaneous chemical changes in media can also be expected to result from the high temperatures. A kinetic procedure involving on-line computer calculation of heat input, designated asF 0 values, was previously developed to estimate sterility achievement. A similar kinetic procedure, based on a general purpose Arrhenius ‘pseudo’ rate equation and designated asR 0 values, has now been designed to evaluate, and control the effects of temperature and heating time on chemical reactions occurring in the media. Data are presented indicating thatR 0 may be a useful parameter for reducing variability in culture metabolism and ‘scale-up’ when these variations result from different nutrient concentrations produced by non-standard heating during media sterilization in stirred bioreactors.

    Notes: Abstract The basic architecture of a personal communication network consists of a wireline network and mobile terminals. Each mobile terminal communicates with the wireline network through a nearby base station. In order to route incoming calls to a destination mobile terminal, the network must keep track of the location of each mobile terminal from time to time. This is achieved bylocation update such that each mobile terminal reports its current location to the network at specific time points. When an incoming call arrives, the network will page the mobile terminal starting from the last updated location. A trade-off, therefore, exists between the frequency of location update and the number of locations paged in order to track down the mobile terminal. This paper introduces a location update policy which minimizes the cost of mobile terminal location tracking. A mobile terminal dynamically determines when to update after moving to a new cell based on its mobility pattern and the incoming call arrival probability. The performance of this scheme is close to that of the optimal policy reported earlier. However, the processing time requirement of this scheme is very low. The minimal computation required by this scheme enables its usage in mobile terminals which has limited energy supply and computational power.

    Notes: Abstract The ability of two species of aphelinid parasitoids to find and attack Bemisia argentifolii was determined. Experiments were conducted with whitefly patches on single leaf poinsettia plants randomly distributed in canopies of four commercially grown poinsettia crops at an early and late stage of plant growth. Eretmocerus eremicus found experimental patches in canopies of small and large plants more quickly and frequently, and killed more nymphs following patch discovery than Encarsia formosa (Beltsville strain). E. eremicus exhibited a Type I functional response in small and large canopies while E. formosa (Beltsville strain) showed a Type II functional response in small canopies and a weak linear response in large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. eremicus, canopy size increased 4.6× and nymphs per plant increased 14.2× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently, area of search for this parasitoid increased 83%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 74%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies. In greenhouses treated with E. formosa Beltsville strain, canopy size increased 7.3× and nymphs per plant increased 25.4× between small and large canopy experiments. Consequently for E. formosa Beltsville strain, area of search increased 11%, number of wasps counted on patches decreased 86%, and proportion of nymphs killed in artificial patches decreased 47% between small and large canopies.

    Notes: Abstract Wireless personal communication networks (PCNs) consist of a fixed wireline network and a large number of mobile terminals. These terminals are free to travel within the PCN coverage area without service interruption. Each terminal periodically reports its location to the network by a process calledlocation update. When a call for a specific terminal arrives, the network will determine the exact location of the destination terminal by a process calledterminal paging. This paper introduces a mobile user location management mechanism that incorporates a distance based location update scheme and a selective paging mechanism that satisfies predefined delay requirements. An analytical model is developed which captures the mobility and call arrival pattern of a terminal. Given the respective costs for location update and terminal paging, the average total location update and terminal paging cost is determined. An iterative algorithm is then used to determine the optimal location update threshold distance that results in the minimum cost. Analytical results are also obtained to demonstrate the relative cost incurred by the proposed mechanism under various delay requirements.

    Notes: Abstract The X-ray structure of S-methyl(pentafluorosulfanyl)thiocarbamate, SF5NHC(O)SCH3, has been determined from three-dimensional diffractometer data and refined by full-matrix least-squares techniques. The crystals are monoclinic:P21/m,a=5.008 (5),b=7.811 (2),c=9.348 (4) Å, β=99.08 (7)°, andZ=2; finalR=0.046 for 517 observed reflections. The structure comprises hydrogen-bonded (NH⋯O) chains with the component monomers in thecis, cis-conformation, i.e., the arrangement of the nonhydrogen and nonfluorine atoms is nearly planar, the SF5 group and the O are in acis position with respect to the C-NH bond, and the O and the CH3 group are in acis position with respect to the C(O)-S bond. Theoretical methods including MNDO and molecular modeling were used to study the relative stabilities of the four possible conformations of SF5NHC(O)SCH3.

Measurements of the activation energy of electrical conductance and desiccation rates on subtidal marine algae from Florida were compared to similar data from the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia, on intertidal marine algae frequently subjected to long periods of exposure to air. We have developed a method for calculating the reaction rate constant of desiccation of fully hydrated marine algae. Values of activation energies and desiccation rate constants are consistent with the requirements for survival of these algae under widely different environmental conditions.

    Notes: Summary Industrial fermentation media are normally sterilized with steam to destroy the indigenous microbial population prior to inoculation with a specific microorganism. Because biological validation of each sterilization cycle is impractical, an ‘overkill’ approach is commonly employed on the basis that alteration of heat-sensitive nutrients is less detrimental than survival of indigenous microbes. However, the heat destruction of microbes is known to be a probability function amenable to calculation. A computer has been programmed to calculate the on-line heat input asF 0 values during sterilization of media in stirred bioreactors. The accumulation ofF 0 values is then announced verbally to bioreactor operators by a communications controller with voice synthesizer.
