    Description: A new strategy for a P-wave based, on-site earthquake early warning system has been developed and tested on Japanese strong motion data. The key elements are the real-time, continuous measurement of three peak amplitude parameters and their empirical combination to predict the ensuing peak ground velocity. The observed parameters are compared to threshold values and converted into a single, dimensionless variable. A local alert level is issued as soon as the empirical combination exceeds a given threshold. The performance of the method has been evaluated by applying the approach to the catalog of Japanese earthquake records and counting the relative percentage of successful, missed and false alarms. We show that the joint use of three peak amplitude parameters improves the performance of the system as compared to the use of a single parameter, with a relative increase of successful alarms of about 35%. The proposed methodology provides a more reliable prediction of the expected ground shaking and improves the robustness of a single-station, threshold-based earthquake early warning system.

    Description: The massive tsunami generated by the 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.0) was widely recorded by GPS buoys, wave gauges, and ocean bottom pressure sensors around the source. Numerous inversions for finite-fault slip time histories have been performed using seismic and/or geodetic observations, yielding generally consistent patterns of large co-seismic slip offshore near the hypocenter and/or up-dip near the trench, where estimated peak slip is ∼60 m. Modeling the tsunami generation and near-field wave processes using two detailed rupture models obtained from either teleseismic P waves or high-rate GPS recordings in Japan allows evaluation of how well the finite-fault models account for the regional tsunami data. By determining sensitivity of the tsunami calculations to rupture model features, we determine model modifications that improve the fit to the diverse tsunami data while retaining the fit to the seismic and geodetic observations.

    Description: The 25 October 2010 Mentawai, Indonesia earthquake (Mw 7.8) ruptured the shallow portion of the subduction zone seaward of the Mentawai islands, off-shore of Sumatra, generating 3 to 9 m tsunami run-up along southwestern coasts of the Pagai Islands that took at least 431 lives. Analyses of teleseismic P, SH and Rayleigh waves for finite-fault source rupture characteristics indicate ∼90 s rupture duration with a low rupture velocity of ∼1.5 km/s on the 10° dipping megathrust, with total slip of 2–4 m over an ∼100 km long source region. The seismic moment-scaled energy release is 1.4 × 10−6, lower than 2.4 × 10−6 found for the 17 July 2006 Java tsunami earthquake (Mw 7.8). The Mentawai event ruptured up-dip of the slip region of the 12 September 2007 Kepulauan earthquake (Mw 7.9), and together with the 4 January 1907 (M 7.6) tsunami earthquake located seaward of Simeulue Island to the northwest along the arc, demonstrates the significant tsunami generation potential for shallow megathrust ruptures in regions up-dip of great underthrusting events in Indonesia and elsewhere.

    Description: The 2016 M w 5.2 Borrego Springs earthquake occurred in the trifurcation area of the San Jacinto fault zone and generated more than 23,000 aftershocks. We analyze source properties of this earthquake along with 12,487 precisely located aftershock hypocenters to obtain an unusually detailed view of the rupture process and energy budget for this moderate earthquake. Source time functions are obtained using an empirical Green's function approach and are inverted for a slip distribution on the fault plane. The rupture propagated unilaterally to the northwest over a distance of 1.8 km, resulting in clear directivity signals. Two asperities are identified and the maximum slip is 2.54 m, resulting in a static stress drop of 78.2 MPa. Over 97% of the aftershocks occur more than 1 rupture length from the slip area. We conclude that the Borrego Springs earthquake had a complete stress drop, and estimate the seismic efficiency to be 15-26%.

    Description: This study investigates the regional and seasonal rainfall rate retrieval uncertainties within nine state-of-the-art satellite based rainfall products over the Maritime Continent (MC) region. The results show consistently larger differences in mean daily rainfall among products over land, especially over mountains and along coasts, compared to over ocean, by about 20% for low to medium rain rates, and 5% for heavy rain rates. However, rainfall differences among the products do not exhibit any seasonal dependency over both surface types (land and ocean) of the MC region. The differences between products largely depends on the rain rate itself, with a factor two difference for light rain and 30% for intermediate and high rain rates over ocean. The rain rate products dominated by microwave measurements showed less spread among themselves over ocean compared to the products dominated by infrared measurements. Conversely, over land, the rain gauge-adjusted post-real time products dominated by microwave measurements produced the largest spreads, due to the usage of different gauge analyses for the bias corrections. Inter-comparisons of rainfall characteristics of these products revealed large discrepancies in detecting the frequency and intensity of rainfall. These satellite products are finally evaluated at sub-daily, daily, monthly, intra-seasonal, and seasonal temporal scales against high-quality gridded rainfall observations in the Sarawak (Malaysia) region for the 4-year period 2000 – 2003. No single satellite-based rainfall product clearly outperforms the other products at all temporal scales.     Notes: Abstract Shock waves generated by the space shuttles Columbia (August 13, 1989), Atlantis (April 11, 1991) and Discovery (September 18, 1991) on their return to Edwards Air Force Base, California, were recorded by TERRAscope (Caltech's broadband seismic network), the Caltech-U.S.G.S Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN), and the University of Southern California (USC) Los Angeles Basin Seismic Network. The spatial pattern of the arrival times exhibits hyperbolic shock fronts from which the path, velocity and altitude of the space shuttle could be determined. The shock wave was acoustically coupled to the ground, converted to a seismic wave, and recorded clearly at the broadband TERRAscope stations. The acoustic coupling occurred very differently depending on the conditions of the Earth's surface surrounding the station. For a seismic station located on hard bedrock, the shock wave (N wave) was clearly recorded with little distortion. Aside from the N wave, very little acoustic coupling of the shock wave energy to the ground occurred at these sites. The observed N wave record was used to estimate the overpressure of the shock wave accurately; a pressure change of 0.5 to 2.2 mbars was obtained. For a seismic station located close to the ocean or soft sedimentary basins, a significant amount of shock wave energy was transferred to the ground through acoustic coupling of the shock wave and the oceanic Rayleigh wave. A distinct topography such as a mountain range was found effective to couple the shock wave energy to the ground. Shock wave energy was also coupled to the ground very effectively through large man made structures such as high rise buildings and offshore oil drilling platforms. For the space shuttle Columbia, in particular, a distinct pulse having a period of about 2 to 3 seconds was observed, 12.5 s before the shock wave, with a broadband seismograph in Pasadena. This pulse was probably excited by the high rise buildings in downtown Los Angeles which were simultaneously hit by the space shuttle shock waves. The proximity of the natural periods of the high rise buildings and the modal periods of the Los Angeles basin enabled efficient energy transfer from shock wave to seismic wave.

    Notes: Abstract The fluorine doping process of pure silica “soot” with various type of fluorine gases in the vapour-phase axial deposition (VAD) sintering process was investigated in detail. This investigation showed that the doping level is proportional to the 1/4 power of the concentration of the fluorine gas, and the achievable reduction of relative refractive index is −0.75% with this process. The kinetic investigation clarified that the fluorine doping process consists of the doping and dissociation reactions; the former reaction obeys the 1/2 power of the SiF4 partial pressure and the latter the two power of fluorine content [SiO1.5F], where SiO1.5F represents a silicon tetrahedron consisting of one fluorine and three bridging oxygen atoms in glass. The fluorine content is proportional to the 1/4 power of the SiF4 partial pressure at an equilibrium where the doping reaction is in competition with the dissociation reaction.
