    Notes: Abstract  We synthesized a new class of organic nanoporous polymers using cyclodextrins as basic building blocks. These processible nanoporous polymers were named 'nanosponges' because they have nanometer-size pores (distribution 0.7–1.2 nm) and exhibit superior ability to absorb organic molecules in water. Cyclodextrin cavities provide a hydrophobic environment and hence generate a strong affinity to organic molecules at water-solid interfaces. Indeed, the formation constant (K) of polymeric cyclodextrins and organic guest molecules is more than eight orders of magnitude larger than molecular cyclodextrin systems in water, and yet the process is completely reversible in organic solvents such as ethanol. The significant potential of these results is that hazardous organic contaminants may be reduced to parts-per-trillion levels in water by these polymers, as measured by ion-trap mass spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy.

    Notes: Abstract. The quarkonia-glueball structure of $\eta$ , $\eta^{'}$ and $\eta(1440)$ is phenomenologically deduced from the updated world average data including two-photon decays of pseudoscalar mesons, radiative decays between pseudoscalar and vector mesons, decays of $J/\psi$ into a vector and a pseudoscalar meson, and radiative decays of $J/\psi$ . Corrections due to SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking, non-ideal $\omega$ - $\phi$ mixing, double OZI and electromagnetic amplitudes of $J/\psi$ decays into a vector and a pseudoscalar meson, and three-gluon-annihilation amplitudes of radiative decays of $J/\psi$ are included in our analysis. Some predictions on the decays involving $\eta(1410)$ are presented, which can be tested at Beijing Electron Positron Collider/Beijing Spectrometer (BEPC/BES) with 50 million $J/\psi$ events.

    Notes: Abstract A new vectorial beam propagation method has successfully been applied to a passive polarization splitter and a passive polarization converter on InGaAsP/InP. The propagating fields are calculated and the power attenuation is evaluated. The calculated crosstalk values of the splitter are in good agreement with the realized best performance. A complete polarization conversion in the converter has also been simulated.

    Notes: Abstract Multicriteria analysis is one of the analytical functions in the problem processing system of decision support systems (DSS). In this paper, an interactive and iterative fuzzy programming method for solving a quasi-optimization problem in complex decisions under constraints involving a multiple objective function is proposed. Comparing with an adapted gradient search method, a surrogate worth tradeoff method, and a Zionts—Wallenius method, an approximate preference structure is emphasized in the proposed method.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper is concerned with a continuous-time mean-variance portfolio selection model that is formulated as a bicriteria optimization problem. The objective is to maximize the expected terminal return and minimize the variance of the terminal wealth. By putting weights on the two criteria one obtains a single objective stochastic control problem which is however not in the standard form due to the variance term involved. It is shown that this nonstandard problem can be ``embedded'' into a class of auxiliary stochastic linear-quadratic (LQ) problems. The stochastic LQ control model proves to be an appropriate and effective framework to study the mean-variance problem in light of the recent development on general stochastic LQ problems with indefinite control weighting matrices. This gives rise to the efficient frontier in a closed form for the original portfolio selection problem.

    Notes: Abstract A novel quantitative method for the determination of proteins in aqueous solutions has been based on the quenching of the resonance scattering light of colloidal silver chloride in the presence of proteins. The detection limits for eight kinds of proteins (BSA, HSA, egg albumin, human γ-IgG,α-chymotrypsin, E. Coli. alpsase, myoglobin, α-casein) were at about 8 ng/mL; the linear ranges of the calibration curves were 10–400 ng/mL ¶under optimal conditions,except for human γ-IgG (20–¶400 ng/mL), myoglobin (10–300 ng/mL), and α-casein (10–300 ng/mL). Three wavelengths (398 nm, 475 nm, 499 nm) were all suitable for the determination and any acidity from pH 3.0 to pH 9.0 could be chosen. A few non-protein substances at high concentration levels interfered with this method, but this problem could simply be overcome by diluting the samples before the assay. Mechanism studies showed that the quenching effect of proteins on the scattering light of colloidal silver chloride was mainly due to the coagulation of AgCl particles retarded by protein. The method was employed for the determination of total protein in human serum with sactifactory results.

    Notes: Abstract A fluorescence quenching method was developed for the rapid determination of DNA and RNA using magdala red as fluorescence probe. In weakly acidic ¶medium, the fluorescence of magdala red (λex〉lem = 54055 nm) can be largely quenched by DNA or RNA. The calibration graphs are linear over the range 0.01–¶1.2 μg/mL for both calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) and salmon DNA (SM DNA), and 0.015–1.0 μg/mL for yeast RNA, respectively. The corresponding detection limits are ¶6.0 ng/mL for CT DNA, 7.0 ng/mL for SM DNA and ¶15.0 ng/mL for yeast RNA, respectively. CT DNA could be determined in the presence of 20% (w/w) yeast RNA, and the relative standard deviation of six replicate measurements is 3.18% for 400 ng/mL of CT DNA. Interference from coexisting substances in the determination of DNA was also examined. Real samples were determined with satisfactory results.

    Notes: Abstract The S K and L-edge x-ray absorption near-edge structures (XANES) of low bornite, cubanite, chalcocite, covellite, enargite and tetrahedrite have been measured with synchrotron radiation. The near-edge features are interpreted based on comparison with the S K- and L-edge spectra of chalcopyrite and a MO/energy band structure model. The XANES spectra of these sulfides reflect the DOS of unoccupied S s-, p- and d-like states near and above the Fermi level. In tetrahedral Cu-Fe sulfides, the Fe3+ 3d crystal field band has much more significant DOS of unoccupied S 3p-and 3s-like states than the Cu+ 3d crystal field band. For Cu sulfides, the Cu+ 3d crystal field band has the higher DOS of S 3p- and 3 s-like states in tetrahedral structure than in structures with the triangular CuS3 cluster. The shifts in both S K- and L-edges correlate approximately linearly with the energy gap.

    Notes: Abstract  The B K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra of two borates with tetrahedrally-coordinated B [[4]B; natural danburite (CaB2Si2O8) and synthetic boron phosphate (BPO4)] have been recorded in total electron yield (TEY) and fluorescence yield (FY) modes to investigate the surface and bulk structure of these materials. The TEY XANES measurement shows that danburite is susceptible to surface damage involving conversion of [4]B sites to [3]B sites by reaction with moisture and/or mechanical abrasion (grinding, polishing, etc.). The bulk of the mineral is essentially unaffected. Commercial boron phosphate powder exhibits more extensive surface and bulk damage, which increases with air exposure but is recovered on heating at 650°C. In contrast to ELNES, the XANES technique is not affected by beam damage and when collected in the FY mode is capable of yielding meaningful information on the coordination and intermediate-range structure of B in borate and borosilicate materials.
