Notes: Abstract The catalytic activity of the proton forms of zeolite β and ZSM-5 are compared for the conversion of acetone. Zeolite β demonstrates markedly enhanced selectivity to isobutene and selectivities of 〉80% can be achieved for conversions up to 65%. In contrast high selectivities to isobutene with ZSM-5 can be attained only at very low conversions (≤5%).

Keywords: Propane aromatization ; zeolite H-ZSM-5

    Topics: Chemistry and Pharmacology
Notes: Abstract The aromatization of propane is investigated for Ga2O3, H-ZSM-5 and Ga2O3/H-ZSM-5 catalysts, and the results are discussed for a series of ZSM-5 catalysts containing varying SiO2/Al2O3 ratios. It is apparent that on addition of a gallium phase to H-ZSM-5, the yield of methane is significantly decreased. These results are discussed with respect to the mechanism of formation of the initial reaction product from propane. It is proposed that the synergy observed between the gallium compound and the zeolite can be explained in terms of a mechanism in which the role of the gallium phase is to induce C-H bond polarization in the propane, which leads to attack via the Bronsted acid sites of the zeolite, which leads to initial C-H bond cleavage occurring.

Notes: Abstract The activation of propane using zeolite H-Y and Ga3+ exchanged zeolite Y indicates that in the presence of Ga3+ the mechanism of propane activation is changed from a cracking pathway to a dehydrogenation pathway. The presence of both Ga3+ and H+ are required to achieve this effect.

Notes: Abstract Thermal-wave electron microscopy, which employs heat flow to probe variations in the thermal properties of solid materials, can provide micrometre-level resolution of surface and subsurface features of opaque samples. The effects of modulation frequency, phase detection and surface characteristics on the contrast and resolution of thermal-wave electron images of corrosion products on unprotected steel surfaces were investigated. Thermal-wave electron imaging is shown to be capable of distinguishing between the corrosion products and surface topographic features of the sample. This allows an automated image analysis technique to be used to assess quantitatively the extent of corrosion on rough steel surfaces.

Notes: Abstract Critics have condemned English Romantic tragedies as a series of poor imitations of Renaissance tragedy. This paper tests such “literary-critical” questions through statistical comparisons of ten plays from each group. The measures chosen give evidence of a strong and consistent difference between the groups, going beyond historical changes in the language. The Romantic tragedies are more expository; the Renaissance ones include more commonplace interactions between characters. The later plays do not show the marked variations in function-word frequencies of their predecessors. Of the Renaissance plays, Shakespeare's show the closest affinity to the Romantic tragedies, and the most telling contrasts.

Notes: Abstract  Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) colonization can alter transpiration of host leaves, but scientists remain unclear about the mechanisms involved. We tested whether intact root systems were required to observe effects of root colonization by Glomus intraradices on leaf transpiration, or whether some VAM influence resided in leaves even after they were detached from root systems. We measured the transpiration of detached leaves of VAM and nonmycorrhizal plants exposed to different levels of several substances known to influence stomata locally or act in whole-plant regulation of transpiration: abscisic acid, calcium, phosphorus, and hydrogen ions. In rose, some VAM influence on transpiration resided in leaves, even after they had been separated from their root systems. However, removing leaves from their root systems eliminated the VAM influence on stomatal behavior of cowpeas.

Notes: Summary Periodicity, predictability and stochasticity of environmental perturbations are shown to influence the community structure that develops in microcosms. Sets of replicate, microalgal communities were subjected to different temporal patterns of rarefaction and resource resupply and their species-abundance patterns after 120 days of such manipulations were determined. Perturbations having, 1, 7, and 28 day periodicities differentially effected community structure. The predictability of these perturbations had a less profound influence on the communities which developed than the average perturbation periodicity.

Notes: Abstract Chrysophycean cysts (stomatocysts, statospores) from Lake Baikal and Irkutsk Reservoir, Siberia, Russia have been investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy for the first time. The paper contains descriptions and illustrations of 7 particularly distinctive forms. Five of the cyst types described here are new to the literature. Two are very similar to cysts previously described from lake sediments in North America, but differ in details of surface ornamentation and cyst collar construction.

Notes: Abstract Chrysophyte algae produce siliceous resting cysts (stomatocysts) that are becoming an increasingly useful class of paleoecological indicator microfossils. This paper provides a review of the role that stomatocysts play in the life cycle and reproductive ecology of freshwater planktonic chrysophytes. Such information provides paleolimnologists with greater insight into the ecology of the vegetative, planktonic growth phase of species contributing stomatocysts to lacustrine microfossil assemblages. Specific chrysophyte reproductive characteristics discussed include: temporal dynamics of vegetative growth and encystment, cyst induction, cyst survivorship, germination requirements and recruitment strategies. This information serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Journal of Paleolimnology which is dedicated to the ‘Application of Chrysophyte Stomatocysts in Paleolimnology’.
