Description: This dataset was acquired in a research program funded by the European Commission known as ECOSUD (Estuaries and Coastal Areas: Basis and Tools for a more Sustainable Development). It includes the realization of 4 field campaigns (one every season), where morphologic, meteorological, hydrodynamic, hydrographic, and water quality data were acquired. Sampling campaigns were performed under several salinity conditions in the estuary. The first 2 cruises were conducted in Mangueira Bay and the southern estuarine portion of Patos Lagoon (Rio Grande Channel) in order to obtain contrasting data. Samples were taken in October 2002 (austral spring) and June 2003 (austral winter). 2 additional cruises were then conducted in the remaining seasons: one in December 2003 (austral summer) and the other in April 2004 (austral fall). At each sampling station, the water column was sampled at the surface using a Van Dorn-like bottle. Samples were stored in polyethylene bottles and kept at 5°C until they arrived at the laboratory, where they were either promptly analyzed or preserved. SPM samples were analyzed using the methods described by Baumgarten et al. (Baumgarten, M., Rocha, J., and Niencheski, L.: Manual de Análises em Oceanografia Química, FURG, Rio Grande, Brazil, 1996).

Description: Jung (Jung, B. M.: Variabilidade dos Fluxos de Sedimentos em Suspensão para a Lagoa dos Patos e os Processos de Trocas com o OceanoAdjacente, Master's thesis, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG, Rio Grande, Brazil, 2017) used the suspended sediment rating-curve approach to derive SPM concentrations from riverine outflow at the Guaíba River (from 1988 to 1990), Camaquã River (1988-1990), and São Gonçalo Channel (2009-2014). The method assumes a uniform flow in the water column therefore SPM estimates are considered uniform from surface to bottom. The author's work used monthly averaged SPM field data from 'Agência Nacional de Águas' (ANA; http://www.snirh.gov.br/hidroweb), Baisch (Baisch, P.: Les Oligo-Elements Metallique du Systeme Fluvio-Lagunare dos Patos (Bresil) - Flux et deverir, Ph.D. thesis, L'Université Bordeaux I, 1994) and Avila (Avila, R. A.: Distribuição do material particulado em suspensão e suas inter-relações com diferentes propriedades no estuário da Lagoa dosPatos, Master's thesis, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande - FURG, Rio Grande, Brazil, 2013) to calibrate its rating-curve equation. The SPM data presented here is the information estimated from the monthly riverine outflow for the Guaíba and Camaquã Rivers.

Description: The objective of this PhD research was to study the environmental behavior and impact of trace metal elements in the Patos Lagoon system (Baisch, P.: Les Oligo-Elements Metallique du Systeme Fluvio-Lagunare dos Patos (Bresil) - Flux et deverir, Ph.D. thesis, L'Université Bordeaux I, 1994). It also aimed to determine SPM, particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen fluxes from rivers to the lagoon. SPM was obtained from May 1988 to August 1990 for the Camaquã River and from January 1988 to June 1990 for the Guaíba River following the methodology proposed by Aminot and Chaussepied (1983).

Description: This project collected a series of physical, chemical and biological parameters. The data consists of sampling carried out in January 1986, at which sampling cruises were realized in 60 stations. These data are relative to samples in the estuary (6-8 January), in the São Gonçalo Channel area (12-15 January), Tapes (19-22 January), and Pontal da Formiga (29-31 January), the northernmost sampled region. Of these, 17 stations were sampled in the estuarine region, and the remaining were divided in transects E-W and N-S, thus covering all regions of the lagoon. In the E-W direction, data were obtained from margin to margin. Water samples were collected at the surface and near the bottom using a plastic bucket or a 3 l horizontal bottle. SPM analysis were carried out gravimetrically on pre-weighted Gelman GA (0.45 μm pore size) by 'Laboratório de Hidroquímica' at 'Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG)'.

Description: The oceanographic cruises were carried out in the Patos Lagoon estuarine area by the 'Laboratório de Hidroquímica', at FURG. This dataset is composed of groups of data made available by Niencheski and Windom (1994; doi:10.1016/0048-9697(94)90004-3) and Baumgarten et al. (2001). The first group of data were obtained in cruises carried out from 1989 to 1991. Water samples were collected at 20 fixed stations along the estuary and at 1 fixed station in São Gonçalo Channel. At each station, both surface and bottom water samples were collected using Van Dorn bottles, and placed into clean plastic bottles. Analysis of SPM followed the procedures described in Aminot and Chaussepied (Aminot, A. and Chaussepied, M.: Manuel des Analyses Chimiques en milieu Matin, CNEXO, Bres, p. 396, 1983.). Nutrients, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate were also sampled by the authors but data is not assessed here. Baumgarten et al. (2001) presented data collected in a shallow and small bay (Saco da Mangueira) located in Patos Lagoon estuary. In this area, 3 sites were sampled monthly for 15 months (April 1994 to September 1995). The sites location was distributed in areas receiving high loads of nutrients from different sources: INCA, Arroio Simão, and Fábrica de Fertilizantes. Water sampling on the surface and bottom was executed using a Van Dorn-type bottle and SPM concentrations were estimated according to the protocols latter published by Baumgarten et al. (Baumgarten, M., Rocha, J., and Niencheski, L.: Manual de Análises em Oceanografia Química, FURG, Rio Grande, Brazil, 1996)

Description: The 'Lagoa dos Patos' project goal was to assess geological, chemical, physical, biological and socio-economic parameters along the lagoon in order to advise on the best approach for exploration of the Patos Lagoon resources at the time. The Project was composed of monthly expeditions studying distribution and behavior of properties affecting water quality: salinity, water temperature and SPM among other parameters and the dynamics of sediments in the Patos Lagoon, although only Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) is available here. SPM data were acquired between December 1987 and December 1988 in 19 stations along the lagoon. A total of 13 monthly cruises were carried out from North to South of the lagoon. Stations were located in the navigational canal and samples were obtained at the surface, mid water column, and bottom. All SPM samples were acquired using the methodology by Aminot and Chaussepied (Aminot, A. and Chaussepied, M.: Manuel des Analyses Chimiques en milieu Matin, CNEXO, Bres, p. 396, 1983).

Description: The most comprehensive study of Patos Lagoon was carried out by the 'Pró-Mar de Dentro' Project. During the period between February 1999 to January 2000, 11 sampling expeditions were performed, where 8 stations were established in the Patos Lagoon main axis, 3 stations on the main tributaries (Guaíba River, Camaquã River, and São Gonçalo Channel), and 1 station on the inner continental shelf, just after the Patos Lagoon inlet. During sampling procedures, a variety of chemical, physical, and biological parameters were analyzed. Data and results were reported in the year 2000 by a partnership with 'Japan International Cooperation Agency' (JICA), the project sponsor.

Description: Remote sensing has proved to be an effective tool for SPM studies in Patos Lagoon. The ability to use this tool allows detailed analysis of spatial and temporal patterns and contributes to a better understanding of SPM dynamics. 17 years of daily MODIS-aqua data were used to estimate SPM concentration. The satellite scenes were atmospherically corrected and checked for quality of Remote Sensing Reflectance in a quality control system proposed by Wei et al. (2016; doi:10.1002/2016JC012126). It consists of a scoring system ranging from 1 (perfectly acquired data) to zero (unusable). Values corresponding to scores lower than 0.6 were excluded from the data set. SPM was then estimate based on the semi-analytical algorithm proposed by Nechad et al. (2010; doi:10.1016/j.rse.2009.11.022). Data is available as averaged sample boxes from north to south of Patos Lagoon, rivers mouth, and lagoon inlet.

Description: The 'Material em Suspensão' project was designed considering the varying dimensions of different regions of Patos Lagoon. Three sampling designs were established and called Phases I-III. This dataset introduces Phase II. The data was obtained from May 1982 to December 1983, totaling 19 cruises. In situ sampling was performed in 30 points, located mainly in 3 transverse sections, and water samples were collected using a modified Ottmann horizontal bottle. When local depth was greater than 3 m, surface, mid water column, and bottom were sampled, and only at surface and bottom otherwise. SPM was measured gravimetrically on pre-weighted filter. The filtration of those samples was performed on acetate cellulose filter (0.45 μm pore size). Filters were then weighted in a precision scale.
