Description: In the designated snowpits, 100cm3 of snow was collected in the field, melted and measured for salinity in the laboratory on board Polarstern. Salinity of the melted snow samples was measured using the YSI 30 Salinity, Conductivity and Temperature sensor. The transport containers, as well as the YSI tip, were cleaned using milli-Q water. Salinity profiles were measured at the same intervals as density and stable isotope profiles.

Description: In the designated snowpits on the MOSAic expedition a 100cm3 sample of snow was measured for density in the field, approximately every 3 vertical centimetres. The same snow volume was melted for salinity measurements and sealed into glass jars onboard Polarstern. As a result, δ18O and δ2H isotope composition was measured at the same intervals as density and salinity profiles, included in the snowpit dataset bundle. These samples were then transported to the WSL laboratory in Switzerland to analyse the stable water isotopes (δ18O and δ2H). This dataset provides details on the date and coordinates of the snowpit event, the height of the sample in the snow profile, and the corresponding isotope composition. This dataset includes the isotopic composition of the samples obtained in the winter months (October 2019 to May 2020). After analysis of the samples, and comparing the values to a parallel dataset (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.948511), it was identified that our samples needed to be corrected due to evaporative fractionation during sample storage. The corrected values are included in this published dataset and we recommend that future studies using this dataset use these corrected values only. The correction was done by calculating the mean of this dataset to the mean of the parallel dataset and correcting for the difference. As a result, the δ18O was corrected by -6.4‰, the δ2H was corrected by -36.4‰. The new values are located in the columns 'δ18O H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)' and 'δD H2O [‰ SMOW] (Corrected)'. We would like to emphasise that calculations of d-excess values for this dataset need interpreting carefully.

Description: At MOSAiC, we collected snow depths by Magnaprobe - an automated snow depth probe, throughout the seasons, most often alongside electromagnetic measurements for deriving total thickness. Most of the data were collected routinely along established transect lines and loops to create timeseries. Some data were collected opportunistically e.g., during 'events'. In addition, several repeated ridge transects were established. During the melt season (June – September 2020), the Magnaprobe was used to measure snow depth, surface scatter layer depth and melt pond depth. This repository includes data obtained by Magnaprobe, sea ice thickness derived by subtracting snow depth from co-located total thickness measurements, a descriptive document including maps (Magnaprobe Repository Description), and a table of with other transect-mode measurements at MOSAiC (Action Log Table): remote sensing instruments, snow structure measurements etc.

Description: The total snow and ice thickness (distance from the snow surface to the ice-ocean interface) was measured by the electromagnetic induction (EM) method. On MOSAiC transects, we used a broad-band EM instrument sensor (GEM-2 by Geophex Ltd) towed on a small sled (Hunkeler et al, 2015; Hunkeler et al, 2016). The instrument includes a real-time data processing unit including a GPS receiver which communicates with a pocket PC that is operates the sensor and records the EM and GPS data streams. The GEM-2 is a broadband sensor that can transmit multiple configurable frequencies in the kHz range simultaneously. The sensor setup during MOSAiC used 5 frequencies with an approximately logarithmic spacing throughout the frequency range of the sensor (1.525 kHz, 5.325 kHz, 18.325 kHz, 63.025 kHz, and 93.075 kHz). The transect measurements are based on an empirical approach based on a sensor calibration, where the GEM-2 was placed at known heights above the sea ice surface using a wooden ladder on top of level ice with a known thickness determined by 5 drill holes. An exponential function was then fitted to the frequency components as function of distance of the sensor to the ice/ocean interface and then applied to the transect data. The closest-in-time calibration result was used when a GEM-2 survey could not be accompanied with a calibration. The total thickness retrieval with the GEM-2 calibration and survey data was done on-board shortly after each profile. The dataset is therefore labeled as GEM-2 quickview data but has been subject to manual quality control. Using a direct relationship between total thickness and frequency component implies the assumption that the sea ice conductivity is negligible and the ice/water interface constant within the GEM-2 footprint. While this is a reasonable assumption for level ice, the peak thicknesses of ridges are known to be underestimated by as much as 50 % (Pfaffing et al, 2007) and will be subject of further processing. To estimate the snow depth and then subtract its thickness from the total thickness we rely on direct measurements of snow depth with Magnaprobe. The co-inciding snow depth measurements on MOSAiC transect can be found here: https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.937781 Not every GEM-2 transect has complimentary snow depth measurements. An overview of all transect measurements at MOSAiC is given in the attached table. For more details we refer to the MOSAiC transect paper by Itkin et al, 2022: Sea ice and snow mass balance from transects in the MOSAiC Central Observatory, in review at Elementa – Science of Anthropocene.

Description: The small-scale surface roughness is important for scattering of shortwave visible and higher-frequency microwave radiation. A standard digital camera (Olympus tough TG-5) and a set of reference targets were used to take sets of images that can be processed using multi-image photogrammetry into high-resolution small-scale digital elevation models (DEMs). The DEMs can be used to estimate roughness of the snow surface and of the snow-ice interface. The reference targets were distributed around a small ( ~ 0.6 m x 0.6 m) area, and pictures were taken from different angles, including all targets in each image, and ideally overlapping by at least 80%. Pictures were always taken with the maximum wide-angle of the camera. During polar night, a headlamp was taken to illuminate the scene before pictures were taken. Image sets of the surface were taken before the snowpit was excavated. Image sets of the snow-ice interface were taken after the detailed snowpit measurements, and the remaining snow was brushed off the ice surface using a brush. Description: A Garmin GPSmap 62sc device was taken to each snowpit event to get the location measurement. If no GPS file is found, further GPS details can be retrieved from the SMP device and the NIR camera. The event metadata also has location information in the form of a location name for each event. This location name indicates a site of interest and can be used to track repetitive measurements in the moving absolute location on the floe. Description: The SnowMicroPen (SMP) is a portable device for high-resolution in-situ measurements of penetration resistance in snow and can be correlated to snow microstructure. The penetration force is measured using a piezo-electric sensor and is digitally recorded every 4 micrometers. The SMP signal can infer stratigraphy, snow type, and snow microstructure at a vertical resolution of 1-4 mm. Based on the force signal, density and specific surface area parameterizations are calculated. Through horizontally repeated measurements, the SMP can help relate detailed point-scale snow profiles to a larger sampling area and provide information about the spatial variability of snow stratigraphy and physical snow properties. During the MOSAiC expedition (October 2019-September 2020), the SMP was used to measure 389 snowpits or transects to allow for upscaling of detailed point measurements of snow profiles. This dataset consists of 6837 SMP measurements and covers a complete annual cycle of snow stratigraphy on sea ice in the high Arctic. Description: Overview photos were taken when arriving at the snowpit site of interest and before the snowpit was excavated. A standard digital camera (Olympus tough TG-5) was used to document the surface conditions and environment for each snowpit event. These images should be used to understand surroundings of the snowpit and conditions on the day of measurements. During winter months the measurement area of a snowpit was indicated using two orange flags. However, a transect snowpit event and snowpits during the summer seasons will not have this marking.
