    Description: We present results from the KMOS Lens-Amplified Spectroscopic Survey (KLASS), an ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program using gravitational lensing to study the spatially resolved kinematics of 44 star-forming galaxies at 0.6 〈 z 〈 2.3 with a stellar mass of 8.1 〈 log(M⋆/M⊙) 〈 11.0. These galaxies are located behind six galaxy clusters selected from the Hubble Space Telescope Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS). We find that the majority of the galaxies show a rotating disc, but most of the rotation-dominated galaxies only have a low υ rot/σ0 ratio (median of υrot/σ0 ∼ 2.5). We explore the Tully–Fisher relation by adopting the circular velocity, $V_{mathrm{ circ}}=(upsilon _{mathrm{ rot}}^2+3.4sigma _0^2)^{1/2}$, to account for pressure support. We find that our sample follows a Tully–Fisher relation with a positive zero-point offset of +0.18 dex compared to the local relation, consistent with more gas-rich galaxies that still have to convert most of their gas into stars. We find a strong correlation between the velocity dispersion and stellar mass in the KLASS sample. When combining our data to other surveys from the literature, we see an increase of the velocity dispersion with stellar mass at all redshift. We obtain an increase of υrot/σ0 with stellar mass at 0.5 〈 z 〈 1.0. This could indicate that massive galaxies settle into regular rotating discs before the low-mass galaxies. For higher redshift (z 〉 1), we find a weak increase or flat trend. We find no clear trend between the rest-frame UV clumpiness and the velocity dispersion and υrot/σ0. This could suggest that the kinematic properties of galaxies evolve after the clumps formed in the galaxy disc or that the clumps can form in different physical conditions.

    Description: Investigating patterns of among and within-individual trait variation in populations is essential to understanding how selection shapes phenotypes. Behavior is often the most flexible aspect of the phenotype, and to understand how it is affected by selection, we need to examine how consistent individuals are. However, it is not well understood whether among-individual differences tend to remain consistent over lifetimes, or whether the behavior of individuals relative to one another varies over time. We examined the dynamics of 4 behavioral traits (tendency to leave a refuge, shyness, activity, and exploration) in a wild population of field crickets ( Gryllus campestris ). We tagged individuals and then temporarily removed them from their natural environment and tested them under laboratory conditions. All 4 traits showed among-individual variance in mean levels of expression across the adult lifespan, but no significant differences in how rapidly expression changed with age. For all traits, among-individual variance increased as individuals got older. Our findings reveal seldom examined changes in variance components over the adult lifetime of wild individuals. Such changes will have important implications for the relationship between behavioral traits, life-histories, and fitness and the consequences of selection on wild individuals.

    Description: We present a detailed comparison between the photometric properties of the bulges of two simulated galaxies and those of a uniform sample of observed galaxies. This analysis shows that the simulated galaxies have bulges with realistic surface brightnesses for their sizes and magnitude. These two field disc galaxies have rotational velocities ~100 km s –1 and were integrated to a redshift of zero in a fully cosmological cold dark matter context as part of high-resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations. We performed bulge–disc decompositions of the galaxies using artificial observations, in order to conduct a fair comparison to observations. We also dynamically decomposed the galaxies and compared the star formation histories of the bulges to those of the entire galaxies. These star formation histories showed that the bulges were primarily formed before z = 1 and during periods of rapid star formation. Both galaxies have large amounts of early star formation, which is likely related to the relatively high bulge-to-disc ratios also measured for them. Unlike almost all previous cosmological simulations, the realistically concentrated bulges of these galaxies do not lead to unphysically high rotational velocities, causing them to naturally lie along the observed Tully–Fisher relation.

    Description: Plasmodium vivax is the most prevalent human malaria parasite outside of Africa. Yet, studies aimed to identify genes with signatures consistent with natural selection are rare. Here, we present a comparative analysis of the pattern of genetic variation of five sequenced isolates of P. vivax and its divergence with two closely related species, Plasmodium cynomolgi and Plasmodium knowlesi , using a set of orthologous genes. In contrast to Plasmodium falciparum , the parasite that causes the most lethal form of human malaria, we did not find significant constraints on the evolution of synonymous sites genome wide in P. vivax . The comparative analysis of polymorphism and divergence across loci allowed us to identify 87 genes with patterns consistent with positive selection, including genes involved in the "exportome" of P. vivax , which are potentially involved in evasion of the host immune system. Nevertheless, we have found a pattern of polymorphism genome wide that is consistent with a significant amount of constraint on the replacement changes and prevalent negative selection. Our analyses also show that silent polymorphism tends to be larger toward the ends of the chromosomes, where many genes involved in antigenicity are located, suggesting that natural selection acts not only by shaping the patterns of variation within the genes but it also affects genome organization.

    Description: We study the spatially resolved stellar kinematics of two star-forming galaxies at z  ~ 0.1 from the larger DYnamics of Newly Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) sample. These galaxies, which have been characterized by high levels of star formation and large ionized-gas velocity dispersions, are considered possible analogues to high-redshift clumpy discs. They were observed using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph instrument in integral field spectroscopy (IFS) mode at the Gemini Observatory with high spectral resolution ( R ~= 5400, equivalent to ~= 24 km s –1 at the observed wavelengths) and ~6 h exposure times in order to measure the resolved stellar kinematics via absorption lines. We also obtain higher quality emission-line kinematics than previous observations. The spatial resolution (1.2 kpc) is sufficient to show that the ionized gas in these galaxies (as traced by Hβ emission) is morphologically irregular, forming multiple giant clumps while stellar continuum light is smooth and well described by an exponential profile. Clumpy gas morphologies observed in IFS data are confirmed by complementary narrow-band Hα imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope . Morphological differences between the stars and ionized gas are not reflected dynamically as stellar kinematics are found to be closely coupled to the kinematics of the ionized gas: both components are smoothly rotating with large velocity dispersions (~40 km s –1 ) suggesting that the high gas dispersions are not primarily driven by star formation feedback. In addition, the stellar population ages of these galaxies are estimated to be quite young (60–500 Myr). The large velocity dispersions measured for these young stars suggest that we are seeing the formation of thick discs and/or stellar bulges in support of recent models which produce these from clumpy galaxies at high redshift.

    Description: We compared the central mass distribution of dwarf and spiral galaxies simulated with three different models of the interstellar medium with increasing complexity: primordial (H+He) cooling, additional cooling via metal lines, and molecular hydrogen ( H 2 ) with shielding of atomic and molecular hydrogen, in addition to metal-line cooling. We followed the evolution of four high-resolution, simulated galaxies with V peak  〈 120 km s –1 to a redshift of zero in a fully cosmological cold dark matter context. The spiral galaxies produced with either primordial cooling or H 2 physics had realistic, rising rotation curves. However, the simulations with metal-line cooling produced spiral galaxies with peaked rotation curves. These differences represent changes to the amount of low-angular-momentum baryons removed by stellar feedback. When there was only primordial cooling, the star-forming gas was hotter and the feedback-heated gas cooled relatively slowly so less energy was required to expel it. When H 2 was included, the accompanying shielding produced large amounts of clumpy, cold gas, and the supernova feedback was more highly concentrated. In contrast to the spiral galaxies, the dwarfs had similarly realistic concentrations and displayed similar behaviour across all models because their low metallicities resulted in smaller differences is the behaviour of the gas.

    Description: Sexual selection results from variation in success at multiple stages in the mating process, including competition before and after mating. The relationship between these forms of competition, such as whether they trade-off or reinforce one another, influences the role of sexual selection in evolution. However, the relationship between these 2 forms of competition is rarely quantified in the wild. We used video cameras to observe competition among male field crickets and their matings in the wild. We characterized pre- and post-copulatory competition as 2 networks of competing individuals. Social network analysis then allowed us to determine 1) the effectiveness of precopulatory competition for avoiding postcopulatory competition, 2) the potential for divergent mating strategies, and 3) whether increased postcopulatory competition reduces the apparent reproductive benefits of male promiscuity. We found 1) limited effectiveness of precopulatory competition for avoiding postcopulatory competition; 2) males do not specifically engage in only 1 type of competition; and 3) promiscuous individuals tend to mate with each other, which will tend to reduce variance in reproductive success in the population and highlights the trade-off inherent in mate guarding. Our results provide novel insights into the works of sexual competition in the wild. Furthermore, our study demonstrates the utility of using network analyses to study competitive interactions, even in species lacking obvious social structure.

    Description: Recent studies showed that Ten-eleven translocation (Tet) family dioxygenases can oxidize 5-methyl-2’-deoxycytidine (5-mdC) in DNA to yield the 5-hydroxymethyl, 5-formyl and 5-carboxyl derivatives of 2’-deoxycytidine (5-HmdC, 5-FodC and 5-CadC). 5-HmdC in DNA may be enzymatically deaminated to yield 5-hydroxymethyl-2’-deoxyuridine (5-HmdU). After their formation at CpG dinucleotide sites, these oxidized pyrimidine nucleosides, particularly 5-FodC, 5-CadC, and 5-HmdU, may be cleaved from DNA by thymine DNA glycosylase, and subsequent action of base-excision repair machinery restores unmethylated cytosine. These processes are proposed to be important in active DNA cytosine demethylation in mammals. Here we used a reversed-phase HPLC coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS/MS) method, along with the use of stable isotope-labeled standards, for accurate measurements of 5-HmdC, 5-FodC, 5-CadC and 5-HmdU in genomic DNA of cultured human cells and multiple mammalian tissues. We found that overexpression of the catalytic domain of human Tet1 led to marked increases in the levels of 5-HmdC, 5-FodC and 5-CadC, but only a modest increase in 5-HmdU, in genomic DNA of HEK293T cells. Moreover, 5-HmdC is present at a level that is approximately 2–3 and 3–4 orders of magnitude greater than 5-FodC and 5-CadC, respectively, and 35–400 times greater than 5-HmdU in the mouse brain and skin, and human brain. The robust analytical method built a solid foundation for dissecting the molecular mechanisms of active cytosine demethylation, for measuring these 5-mdC derivatives and assessing their involvement in epigenetic regulation in other organisms and for examining whether these 5-mdC derivatives can be used as biomarkers for human diseases.

    Description: We present ~100 pc resolution Hubble Space Telescope Hα images of 10 galaxies from the DYnamics of Newly-Assembled Massive Objects (DYNAMO) survey of low- z turbulent disc galaxies, and use these to undertake the first detailed systematic study of the effects of resolution and clump clustering on observations of clumps in turbulent discs. In the DYNAMO- HST sample, we measure clump diameters spanning the range d clump ~ 100–800 pc, and individual clump star formation rates as high as ~5 M  yr –1 . DYNAMO clumps have very high SFR surface densities, SFR ~ 1 – 15 M  yr –1  kpc –2 , ~100 x higher than in H  ii regions of nearby spirals. Indeed, SFR surface density provides a simple dividing line between massive star-forming clumps and local star-forming regions, where massive star-forming clumps have SFR 〉 0.5 M  yr –1  kpc –2 . When degraded to match the observations of galaxies in z ~ 1–3 surveys, DYNAMO galaxies are similar in morphology and measured clump properties to clumpy galaxies observed in the high- z Universe. Emission peaks in the simulated high-redshift maps typically correspond to multiple clumps in full resolution images. This clustering of clumps systematically increases the apparent size and SFR of clumps in 1 kpc resolution maps, and decreases the measured SFR surface density of clumps by as much as a factor of 20 x . From these results we can infer that clump clustering is likely to strongly affect the measured properties of clumps in high- z galaxies, which commonly have kiloparsec scale resolution.
