    Notizen: Abstract Oxidation of Mo2[S2CN(C2H5)2]6 with iodine in a 1∶2 molar ratio yielded the complex MO[S2CN(C2H5)2]4 I3, for which magnetic susceptibility, NMR, IR, UV/visible spectra, and single crystal X-ray structure are reported. Crystals of Mo[S2CN(C2H5)2]4 I3 are monoclinic, space groupC2/c (No. 15),a=26.242(7),b=7.003(1),c=20.447(3) Å,D o =1.97,Z=4,D c =1.890 g cm−3. The structure was determined from 1909 observed reflections and refined by blocked cascade least squares to anR factor of 0.042. The core of the cation, Mo[S2CN(C2H5)2] 4 + , is dodecahedral with approximate point symmetryD 2d (¯42m). The eight S atoms coordinated to the Mo center can be divided into two sets, each forming a distorted tetrahedron. The set constituting a flattened tetrahedron has a mean Mo-S distance of 2.545(2) Å, whereas the set that forms an elongated one has a mean value of 2.500(2) Å. The oxidation state of +5 for the molybdenum atom is supported by the thioureide band [v(RNC)] at 1507 cm−1, which lies between those of similar Mo(IV) and Mo(VI) complexes.

    Notizen: Summary The rate of translation of mRNA into protein is controlled, at least in part, by the concentration of tRNA. However, as one tRNA molecule can recognize more than one codon, different codons translated by the same tRNA may be translated at different rates. The difference in response of a tRNA molecule to different codons could also regulate the rate of protein synthesis. Evidence for this theory is presented, and Crick's “wobble” hypothesis is extended to include the relative strengths of different codon-anticodon interactions.

    Notizen: Abstract Some implementations of a power-of-two one-dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) on vector computers use radix-4 Stockham autosort kernels with a separate transpose step. This paper describes an algorithm that performs well on a Convex C4/XA vector supercomputer on large FFTs by using higher-radix kernels and moving the transpose step into the computational steps. For short transforms a different algorithm is used that calculates the FFT without storing any intermediate results to memory. Performance results using these techniques are given.

    Notizen: Abstract Hungry Valley, and arid basin situated within the Transverse Ranges of Southern California, has been utilized by off-road vehicles (ORVs) since 1971. Loss of vegetation, severe soil erosion and gullying, alluvial fan formation, and increased sediment discharge are the direct results of ORV activity in the valley. These hydrologic-geologic effects have been documented and monitored utilizing sequential aerial photographs, ground surveys, and sediment transport measurements. Despite the increased usage of ORVs on public lands, and the well-documented short-term physical environmental impacts, little data exists on erosion or sediment transport rates in disturbed vs. adjacent undisturbed areas, the ability of natural vegetation to re-establish itself, or the feasibility of site rehabilitation techniques or methods.

    Notizen: Abstract The domestic and industrial waste water from most of the greater Athens, Greece area is discharged into shallow water at the upper end of the semi-enclosed Saronikos Gulf. The lack of circulation and excess organic matter has led to the formation of a rapidly expanding sludge field. Black anoxic sediments high in organic carbon now cover almost 9 sq km of sea floor and contain high concentrations of heavy metals. Maximum increases above background values range from 22× for mercury, 1500× for arsenic, 1200× for chromium, to 3000× for zinc. The principal sources of metals are 1) a fertilizer factory, 2) the Athens sewer outfall, and 3) the industries in eastern Elefsis Bay.

    Notizen: Abstract The San Lorenzo River on the central California coast was the site of a major US Army Corps of Engineers flood control project in 1959. By excavating the channel below its natural grade and constructing levees, the capacity of the river was increased in order to contain approximately the 100 year flood. Production and transport of large volumes of sediment from the river's urbanizing watershed has filled the flood control project with sand and silt. The natural gradient has been re-established, and flood protection has been reduced to containment of perhaps the 30 year flood. In order for the City of Santa Cruz, which is situated on the flood plain, to be protected from future flooding,it must either initiate an expensive annual dredging program, or replan and rebuild the inadequately designed flood control channel. It has become clear, here and elsewhere, that the problem of flooding cannot simply be resolved by engineering. Large flood control projects provide a false sense of security and commonly produce unexpected channel changes.

    Notizen: Abstract Seacliff State Beach, along the shoreline of northern Monterey Bay, California, has a well-documented history of repeated destruction and reconstruction of seawalls and park facilities. Seven times in 60 years the timber seawall has been destroyed by winter storm waves and subsequently rebuilt. The deficiencies of the wall, including (a) inadequate attachment of timber lagging to pilings, (b) inability of pilings or lagging to withstand repeated impact of waves and logs, and (c) inadequate height and internal drainage system have never been adequately addressed and each successive wall has essentially been identical to the previously destroyed wall.

Male golden hamsters were exposed to either 14 h of light per 24 h (LD 14∶10) or LD 6 ∶18 for 210 days, in order to assess the effects of the light-dark cycle and changes in the reproductive system upon locomotor activity. Wheel-running activity was recorded continuously, and testicular size and serum testosterone concentrations were measured periodically throughout the study. 2. The short photoperiod induced a decrease in testicular width, serum levels of testosterone, and the number of wheel revolutions per 24-h period, when compared to the levels of these variables exhibited by LD 14∶10 hamsters. Prolonged exposure to LD 6∶18 resulted in a spontaneous increase in these three parameters to levels indistinguishable from those observed in LD 14∶10 animals. Neither testicular width, serum testosterone concentration, nor quantity of activity changed significantly in LD 14∶10 hamsters throughout the study. 3. LD 6∶18 exposure also induced an expansion of the daily activity time; this increased duration of the daily active phase persisted, even after the spontaneous increase in testicular width, serum testosterone concentration, and number of wheel revolutions per day. The duration of the daily active phase was unchanged in LD 14∶10 animals through the course of the experiment. 4. The onset of activity in all hamsters exposed to LD 14∶10 occured between 0–1 h after lights-off and did not vary appreciably for individual animals during the 210 days of LD 14∶10. The time required for stable reentrainment following a shift from LD 14∶10 to LD 6∶18 varied between 30 and 120 days among individual hamsters, and the phase relationship of activity onset to lights-off after 200 days of LD 6∶18 ranged between -1 and — 6 h. The time course of reentrainment to short days did not appear to be affected by changing testosterone levels. 5. Coincident with LD 6∶18-induced testicular regression was an increased lability of the time of activity onset each day. A return to stability in the day-to-day time of activity onset was coincident with spontaneous testicular recrudescence in LD 6∶18 hamsters. Hamsters maintained on LD 14∶10 exhibited a stable time of daily activity onset throughout the investigation. 6. These results indicate that the number of wheel revolutions per day and the lability of daily activity onset are correlated with light-induced changes in the hamster reproductive system. In contrast, the duration of the daily active phase and the phase relationship between activity onset and lights-off are relatively independent of changes in the reproductive system and are a function of the entraining light-dark cycle.

    Notizen: Summary An L1210 cell line (JT-1), which can grow in medium supplemented with 1nm folate, has been isolated. These cells exhibit a slower growth rate than folate-replete parental cells and have a lower ability to transport folate or methotrexate via the reduced folate transport system. Measurements at nanomolar concentrations of folate revealed that the adapted cells have acquired a high-affinity folate-binding protein. Binding to this component at 37°C was rapid and reached a maximum value after 30 min which corresponded in amount to 0.23±0.3 pmol/mg protein, and excess unlabeled folate added 30 min subsequent to the [3H]folate led to a rapid release of the bound substrate. Radioactivity bound to or released from the cells after 30 min at 37°C remained as unmetabolized folic acid. Binding was also rapid at 0°C but uptake at the plateau was only one-half the value obtained at 37°C. Half-maximal saturation of the binding component (K D) occurred at a folate concentration of 0.065nm at pH 7.4, while the affinity for folate decreased 30-fold when the pH was reduced to 6.2 (K D=2.0nm). 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate was also bound by this component (K i=13nm at pH 7.4) but with a much lower affinity than for folate, while progressively weaker interactions were observed with 5-formyltetrahydrofolate (K i=45nm) and methotrexate (K i=325nm). When the same adaptation procedure was performed with limiting amounts of 5-formyltetrahydrofolate, two additional cell lines, JT-2 and JT-3, were isolated which expressed elevated levels of the folate-binding protein. The binding activity of the latter cells was 0.46 and 1.4 pmol/mg protein, respectively. When the level of binding protein was compared in cells grown at different concentrations of folate, an increase in medium folate from 1 to 500nm caused a sevenfold reduction in binding activity in the JT-3 cell line, while these same growth conditions had no effect on binding by the other cells. These results indicate that L1210 cells adapted to low concentrations of folate or 5-formyltetrahydrofolate contain elevated levels of a high-affinity binding protein and that this protein is able to mediate the intracellular accumulation of folate compounds. L1210 cells thus appear to have two potential uptake routes for folate compounds, the previously characterized anion-exchange system and a second route mediated by a high-affinity binding protein. An additional low-affinity, high-capacity transport system for folate that had been proposed previously was not observed under a variety of experimental conditions in either the adapted or parental cells.
