Abstract The group-specific polysaccharide of group BStreptococcus was found to contain 13% glucitol, a previously unrecognized component. The alditol was present in all types and strains of groupB tested but was not found in any other hemolytic streptococci. Glucitol was present in the same relative proportion in the groupB-specific polysaccharide prepared by three different methods. It could not be separated from the group-specific polysaccharide by immunoprecipitation with antisera to the groupB-specific polysaccharide or by ion-exhange chromatography on diethylaminoethyl cellulose.
