    Description: The GGGGCC (G4C2) repeat expansion in a noncoding region of C9orf72 is the most common cause of sporadic and familial forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. The basis for pathogenesis is unknown. To elucidate the consequences of G4C2 repeat expansion in a tractable genetic system, we generated transgenic fly lines expressing 8, 28 or 58 G4C2-repeat-containing transcripts that do not have a translation start site (AUG) but contain an open-reading frame for green fluorescent protein to detect repeat-associated non-AUG (RAN) translation. We show that these transgenic animals display dosage-dependent, repeat-length-dependent degeneration in neuronal tissues and RAN translation of dipeptide repeat (DPR) proteins, as observed in patients with C9orf72-related disease. This model was used in a large-scale, unbiased genetic screen, ultimately leading to the identification of 18 genetic modifiers that encode components of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), as well as the machinery that coordinates the export of nuclear RNA and the import of nuclear proteins. Consistent with these results, we found morphological abnormalities in the architecture of the nuclear envelope in cells expressing expanded G4C2 repeats in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, we identified a substantial defect in RNA export resulting in retention of RNA in the nuclei of Drosophila cells expressing expanded G4C2 repeats and also in mammalian cells, including aged induced pluripotent stem-cell-derived neurons from patients with C9orf72-related disease.     Notes: Abstract We report on the performance at 1.55 μm of a hybrid receiver combining an In0.47Ga0.53As metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector (with buried AllnAs buffer layer) with a GaAs MESFET preamplifier. A bit error rate of 10-9 is measured at 1 Gbps with nonreturn to zero pseudorandom bit sequence (215–1) at a received optical power of −19 dBm. Modification of the preamplifier design and a reduction of bond pad size could improve the sensitivity by ∼6–7 dB.

    Notes: Summary Capillary Pumped Loop (CPL) is a thermal management device for advanced spacecrafts. This paper presents the operating principles of a CPL and the design characteristics of the components. Another purpose of this experiment was to build up a transparent loop in order to better determine and observe the internal thermofluid dynamics. The results indicated that the CPL could be in normal operation under various heat modes. Observation also told Non-Condensed Gas (NCG) was moving and collecting to somewhere between the condenser section.

    Notes: Abstract X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), weight loss tests and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), has been applied to investigate the corrosion protection properties of zinc phosphate when coated on 7075-T6 aluminium alloy. XPS is consistent with the coating process leading to both physically adsorbed and chemically absorbed zinc. The former is washed away by ultrasonic washing, but the chemically absorbed component, identified as ZnO x , is incorporated into the aluminium oxide layer. This layer helps suppress the dissolution of aluminium during the corrosion process.

    Notes: Abstract 7075-T6 aluminium alloys panels were surface conditioned in a titanium colloid suspension, under a variety of different conditions, and subsequently these samples were immersed in a ZnO + H3PO4 coating mixture, and the phosphate coating layers characterized. Morphologies observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveal that the coating layer consists of two phases, namely an amorphous phase, which is directly bonded to the substrate, and a crystalline phase, in which larger crystal grains grow on top of the amorphous base. Chemical compositions of the coating layers were analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and by static and imaging secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). It is found that the details of the surface conditioning affect the final coating, both in terms of morphology and chemical composition. For example, larger amounts of Zn and P are detected in coatings for which the initial conditioning is done at 40°C, compared with room temperature; a similar statement can be made for surfaces which are water rinsed after the Ti pretreatment, compared with those which are not water rinsed prior to the coating treatment.

    Notes: Abstract An initial review is made of the effects of changing parameters involved in forming a zinc phosphate coating layer by spraying an aluminium alloy 7075-T6. Various coatings were evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and adhesion tests. The coating solution reported represents a modification of that previously used for coating the same system by the dipping method (J. Mater. Sci. 31 (1996) 565), but for spraying it was necessary to add the accelerators KClO3 and NaNO2 in order to achieve an adequate phosphate layer. For this solution, the favoured coating conditions by spraying corresponded to 1 min at 85 °C. A significant effect on the phosphating process is also indicated for the polishing pre-treatment of the substrate; the coating formed on a surface polished by 1200 grid aluminium oxide sandpaper showed good adhesion to paint, whereas that polished with 1200 grid silicon carbide failed to form an adhesive phosphate coating. In general, conditions for spraying are less easy to control than for dipping, but directions are indicated for obtaining promising coatings by the former approach.

    Notes: Abstract Coated layers which formed on 7075-T6 aluminium alloy surfaces after treatment in zinc phosphate (ZPO) suspensions adjusted to different pH values (3.5, 5.0, 6.6, 10.5 and 13.0) were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Comparative XPS tests were also made after the treated surfaces were exposed to a 3.5% NaCl solution for 5 h. The processes of coating from solution, oxidation, etching and bulk diffusion were all involved, although in different proportions, in the different treatments. The amounts of zinc and phosphorus in the uppermost layers were enhanced when the coating was at pH values of 5.0, 10.5 and 13.0, and in each case a mixed ZnO x -AlO x -ZPO structure was apparently formed. The coating prepared at pH=13.0 appeared to provide the best corrosion protection.
