Notes: Abstract A novel type of complex oxide HxV2Zr2O9.H 2O with V4+ and V5+ mixed valence has been hydrothermally synthesized in a V2O5-ZrO2-H2O system at 240°C for 5 days in presence of NaF. The catalytic data over these complex oxides show that these complex oxides are catalytically very active in phenol hydroxylation by 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide, and their catalytic activity is dependent on crystal size of the catalysts. The phenol conversion over the catalyst with crystal size of 7 μm is twice that over the catalyst with crystal size of 35 μm. The V5+ species are suggested to be the catalytic active sites. Some other factors which influence the catalytic activity were also investigated.

Notes: Abstract Giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has been observed in Co5Cu95 alloys fabricated by melt-spinning. The highest MR change of 28.0% occurs for Co5Cu95 after annealing at 450°C for 30 min. Based on the super-paramagnetic assumption, the average size of Co particles embedded in Cu matrix, ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 nm, has been determined by simulating the magnetization curves at 295 K which is higher than the blocking temperatures for the samples. Comparison with phenomenological theory for GMR indicates that the interfacial spin-dependent scattering is the dominant scattering mechanism underlying GMR origin in granular systems. Additionally, for the samples in as-quenched state or annealed at temperatureT A=350°C, the electron hybridization and super-paramagnetic behaviors of fine Co particles may be responsible for the low value of MR change.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The corrosion rate of steel in flowing water of the Mingechaur reservoir is within 0.47–1.08 mm/yr, decreasing rapidly with exposure [3, 4]. 2. Considerable initial values of the cathodic current density, equal to 1–1.5 mA/dm2, are needed for cathodic protection of steel in the same flowing water; however, they decrease rapidly both as a result of the formation of cathode deposits and as a result of the formation of natural films and deposits on the metal. 3. Anodic dissolution of metal in a freshwater flow occurs at the same rates as in nonflowing water.

Notes: Conclusion The investigations indicate the occurrence of considerable corrosion rates in rapidly flowing water of the penstocks of the hydrostation with their rapid corrosion in the velocity range to 6 m/sec. A further increase of the flow velocity markedly reduces the corrosion rate. The process of corrosion of steel depends in this case on the oxygen balance in the water and on the relation between its stimulating and passivating effects. When selecting the operating regimes of penstocks it is necessary to take into account this characteristic of the effect of oxygen on steel in fresh waters.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Instrumental investigations of concrete structures of the Tsimlyansk, Kegum, and Plavinas hydrostations after respectively 35, 50, and 25 years of operation showed that the concrete of the structures of these hydrostations is in a satisfactory state. On-site tests by the ultrasonic method, standard Kashkarov hammer, and cores on a press showed an excess of the compressive strength of concrete in the investigated structural members of the structures by 1.25–3.0 times compared to the standard values for the design grades. At the same time, on individual structures such as the dam spillways at the Tsimlyansk hydrostation, piers of powerhouses and dams, and dividing walls of stilling basins, in the lower pools of the investigated hydrostations there are local and zonal concrete damages and baring of the reinforcement. In these places it is necessary to carry out repair and restoration works. The fishway at the Kegum hydrostation requires overhaul. 2. For safe operation of the flood-control outlet of the Charvak hydrostation, it is necessary to make check calculations of the stability of the shaft lining with consideration of the cavitation and hydrodynamic effect of the flow for the real strength of concrete corresponding to class V22.5 and to seal cavities in the concrete and smooth out the projections of the block joints of the shaft lining of the FCO 3. For the Azerbaijan tunnel, it is necessary to additionally make a concrete lining to increase its water impermeability. The low physical and mechanical characteristics of the concrete of the investigated Charvak hydrostation and Azerbaijan regional power station are explained by the low quality of concreting and poor quality control of the concrete by the appropriate services during construction 4. On the whole the investigations made it possible not only to determine the properties of concrete of the structures but also to determine the scope of repair works and technology of their restoration.
