Notes: Summary The breakpoint of the recurrent t(11;22) translocation, one of the most frequent chromosome anomalies encountered in human population, always involves bands 11q23.2 and 22q11.2. The involvement of the Cλ locus of the immunoglobulin λ gene cluster on chromosome 22 has been suggested: however, in situ hybridization experiments have yielded conflicting results. In order to solve these discrepancies by another approach, we have used bivariate flow sorting to separate the chromosomes of interest and to map the specific breakpoints by direct spot-blot hybridization with the gene-specific radiolabelled DNA probes, Alu, Vλ, ets. The results showed unambiguously that in the t(11;22) patient analysed, a set of Cλ and Vλ genes was translocated to the der(11) chromosome. Since Vλ genes are situated proximally to Cλ genes, we demonstrate that, in the case studied here, the chromosome 22 breakpoint is not located within or even immediately close to the Cλ region.

Notes: Abstract The present study was conducted to assess the feasibility of laser Doppler velocimetry in young infants, as a prelude to ultimately undertaking such measurements in premature infants. A portable, unidirectional laser Doppler velocimeter was developed based on a Kowa RC-2 hand-held fundus camera. Six infants between 1 and 21 weeks of age were studied. Relative red blood cell velocity (δfmax) at the centre of retinal arteries was measured over approximately 10 heart cycles. A pulsatility parameter (P=1−δfmax.dia/δfmax.sys), a summary index of vascular status, was determined from the average diastolic and systolic values of δfmax. Velocity waveforms were obtained in four of the six infants. Arterial pulsatility for the group was 0.63±0.13. Precise non-invasive measurement of arterial red blood cell velocity waveforms in young infants was achieved. The high signal-to-noise ratio and temporal resolution of this data suggest that relative measurements of retinal blood flow may permit assessment of haemodynamic changes in premature infants.

Notes: Abstract The dielectric constant and conductivity of dilute solutions of tetraisoamylammonium nitrate in chlorobenzene are measured between −34.6° and 99.0°C to give association constants for the formation of ion pairs (K A) and triple ions, and electric dipole moments. The quantityK A as a function of temperature is reproduced by the Denison-Ramsey-Fuoss treatment for unolarized ion pairs [Eq. (2)] with a distance of closest approach of 4.90 Å. The dielectric data are reproduced by Onsager's equation with an inherent (gas-phase) dipole moment of the ion pairs of 14.2±0.3 D. Other methods of calculation lead to consistent dipole moments, confirming that the mutual polarization of the ions is important. The energetics of ionic association is considered on the basis that the ion pair may be treated as a polarizable dipole in a spherical cavity.

Notes: Abstract In a quasi-thermodynamic treatment, the partial molar polarization of a solute in a network liquid is expressed in terms of dipole moments, molalities. Kirkwood's formal correlation factors, and solute-induced changes in the correlation factors. The formal correlation factors are then resolved into explicit terms for solvent-solvent, solvent-solute and solute-solute dipole correlation, which convey specific (though limited) information about the stoichiometry and geometry of the respective hydrogen-bonding. Experimental partial molar polarizations are analyzed for aqueous solutions of p-dioxane, pyrazine, quinoxaline, acetone, pyridine, N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylurea, acetonitrile, and dimethylsulfoxide. The treatment does not yield unique hydrogen-bonded structures but, when combined with other evidence, it greatly limits the possibilities. Water molecules appear to donate hydrogen bonds exhaustively to ether and carbonyl oxygen atoms, and to aza-aromatic nitrogen atoms. Water molecules also appear to donate hydrogen bonds to aza-aromatic π-systems, and to the triple bond in acetonitrile.

Notes: Abstract Audiofrequency methods were used to measure dielectric constants of dilute solutions containing electrolytes up to free-ion concentrations of 10−4 M. Using a calibrated transformer bridge, capacitance was measured with an accuracy of 0.03 pF at a conductance of 100 μmho and within 0.3 pF at 800 μmho. Evaluation of the double-layer capacitance from the frequency dependence of the data is discribed. The effect of the free ions on the dielectric constant is found to be relatively large and in reasonable agreement with the prediction of the Debye-Falkenhagen theory. The calculation of the electric dipole moment for polar solutes, including ion pairs, is discussed in terms of Kirkwood's theory. Experimental tests are described for finding out whether possible deviations of Kirk-wood's correlation factors from unity may be neglected. These tests involve changing the solvent and the temperature. The tests were satisfied for the ion pairs of tetraisoamylammonium nitrate and for nitrobenzene in chlorobenzene and acetic acid.

Notes: Abstract Vanadium oxides supported on magnesium fluoride obtained by the impregnation and the precipitation-deposition method have been studied by IR spectroscopy. The adsorption of pyridine indicated the presence of Lewis acid centers on the impregnated samples, whereas on the samples prepared by precipitation both Lewis and Brønsted centers have been observed. From the adsorption coefficients of the 1540 cm−1 (Brønsted site) and 1445 cm−1 (Lewis site) bands the numbers of both sites have been estimated. The hydroxyl groups bound in the chains of the (VO3)n tetrahedra or those in the trigonal pyramids VO5 are believed to be responsible for the protonic centers, whereas the aprotonic centers occur at the ionic vanadium with coordinatively unsaturated spheres.

Notes: Abstract The pre-discoursive agreement. Theory of scientific truth and procedural justification. — On basis of the constructive philosophy of science, the attention is focussed to the pre-discoursive elements of discoursive theories of truth. By using a pragmatic approach it is shown that foundation of those pre-discoursive elements, like discourse rules or the basic terminology, is possible though the discourse rules are not available at this level. Propositions which can be shown in the presented theory to be true, always describe a know-how instead of a knowledge about the world. As a result, the relevance of the presented analysis for prototheories of scientific disciplines is investigated.

Notes: Summary Philosophy of Technology Assessment: Problems of Quantification and Prediction. Technology Assessment (TA) as an interdiscipline project to assist decision-making in the area of technology politics is well-established. A critical analysis based on the constructive philosophy of science, however, uncovers several deficiencies of the philosophical foundation of TA. Especially the fundamental differences between natural and social sciences are neglected by the TA, for example by treating normative problems of decision-making with descriptive techniques of quantification and prediction. It is shown that in TA the philosophical limitations for quantifications and predictions — based on elements of acting theory and a reflection on the nature of descriptive and normative propositions — are ignored. Consequently, a revision of the foundations of technology assessment is suggested.
