    Notes: Brände und Explosionen beim Entfetten von Aluminium-Legierungen mit Trichloräthylen waren Anlaß der Untersuchung2. Zunächst entstehendes AlCl3 katalysiert die Trichloräthylen-Kondensation. Die freigesetzte Wärme löst eine totale Dechlorierung der Kondensationsprodukte und eine vollständige Oxydation der Aluminium-Späne aus. Es wird vorgeschlagen, künftig das gefahrlose Tetrachloräthylen zu verwenden.

    Notes: A mathematical model has been developed to quantify the effects of process conditions during turbulent solidification and mixing of a liquid metal jet in a confined co-flowing molten metal stream.The modelling has been split into three parts. First, a single phase model with no latent heat effects to consider the solidification potential. Secondly, a two phase model where the second phase is comprised of solid particles which solidify during mixing of the two streams. Thirdly, a two phase model where the second phase consists of the inner jet, which is assumed to break up into droplets of given size, and solid particles are allowed to form by solidification within the droplets.The results show that the thermal history (solidification path) of the solid phase formed is affected by latent heat and particle size, which implies that solidification, nucleation and jet fragmentation events should be included dynamically to ensure realistic predictions.

    Notes: The production of dioxins/furans during waste incineration, and particularly the development of measures for minimizing the amount of generated pollutants, continue to command a considerable scientific as well public interest. Experiments are reported which were performed at the TAMARA municipal solid waste pilot incineration, erected on the premises of the karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre. These experiments show that the solid waste mass flow rate and moisture content influence the dioxin/furan formation, Good removal efficiencies of dioxins/furans have been In wet cleaning. Hydrogen peroxide added to the crude gas is an interesting “killer” reagent for dioxins/furans.

    Notes: It is shown in this report that, under certain conditions, cleaning of exhaust air by absorption presents an interesting alternative to the existing methods. In particular, this process can be used with advantage for small quantities of exhaust air, high and strongly fluctuating solvent concentrations and solvent mixtures such as those occurring in batch operation. A washing agent was employed which had not been previously used for this purpose. Its properties, which were investigated in the laboratory, were confirmed during a 15-months' trial period in a semi-industrial plant. The process and plant were optimized for practical use. Through its option of solvent recovery from exhaust air, this physical absorption process contributes to environmental control.

    Notes: In this work the truncation-error criteria of Thompson and Mastin (1985) are combined with conditions of vanishing second and higher derivatives at both endpoints for the purpose of deriving new classes of one-dimensional stretching functions for mesh refinement in finite-difference numerics. With these elementary stretching functions, matching of the slopes between adjacent grid patches then automatically confers Cn regularity upon the composite stretching function. Formulated with reference to two conceptions of truncation order (fixed relative distribution against fixed number of nodes) the resulting mappings are shown to provide particularly advantageous node distributions at both ends simultaneously (with concomitantly higher truncation error in between). Viewed overall, the truncation-error functions compare favourably with those for sinh, tanh and erf - mappings whose utility for mesh refinement was established by Thompson and Mastin. The numerical labour of implementing the new stretching functions is only slightly greater than that required for the error function. An illustrative derivation involving Cn patching leads to two-sided stretching functions, which allow the slopes at both ends to be prescribed arbitrarily. This formulation differs from a previous approach described by Vinokur (1983).
