Notes: Abstract The structure of tricyclohexylphosphineethylidenenickel tricarbonyl, (C6H11)3P(CH)CH3.Ni(CO)3, has been determined by direct methods from 5858 automatic diffractometer data, and refined anisotropically to a finalR value of 0·094 (including hydrogen atoms). The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/n, with a=10·670(1), b=13·879(2), c=16·222(2) Å, β=91·80(1)° and z=4. The main feature of the structure determination is the confirmation of the predicted arrangement of the ligand with its bonding to nickel via the secondary carbon of ylid-ligand. This carbon and the nickel atoms show approximate tetrahedral geometry. There seems to be no direct interaction between phosphorus and nickel (closest approach distance is 3·30 Å). The nickel-carbon distance (2·10 Å) is longer than any other Ni-C(sp3) distance previously reported.

Notes: Abstract The Sun-Earth-Moon system is modeled by the restricted problem of three bodies, and the curves of zero velocity are used to define the limits of stability of the Moon's orbit about the Earth. By holding the relative distances fixed, and maintaining the circular velocities of the Earth and Moon while their masses are varied by a common factor (λ=m′ E/m E=m′ M/m M), it is found that the possibility of the Moon leaving Earth orbit and orbiting the Sun exists for the range of values 0.005〈λ〈0.4.

Notes: Summary Two modifications in the Sanger two dimensional electrophoretic procedure for RNA analysis are reported. One increases resolution on the primary fingerprint to the point that digests of large RNAs, of the size 1500–3000 nucleotides yield well resolved fingerprint patterns. The other is a novel endonucleolytic procedure that proves useful in determining sequences of the large oligonucleotides produced by T1 ribonuclease. These modifications have been used in determining the catalogs of oligomers produced by T1 ribonuclease digestion of 16S rRNAs from three related organisms,Bacillus subtilis, B.pumilus andB.stearothermophilus. The possible effects of adaptation to a thermophilic niche on ribosomal RNA primary structure and the phylogenetic relatedness of the two mesophilic Bacilli are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Observations of lunar radio emission were made at 3.09 mm wavelength (97.1 GHz) from April 18 to May 20, 1971. Absolute brightness temperatures were measured for five distinct areas -Copernicus, Sea of Serenity, Sea of Tranquility (Apollo 11 landing site), Ocean of Storms (Apollo 12 landing site), and a highland region near the mean center - and lunation curves were determined. Theoretical brightness temperatures throughout a lunation were calculated for Copernicus, Sea of Serenity, and the Highlands region using a thermophysical model employing variable properties of the lunar soil. The results showed that the predicted lunation curves are quite sensitive to the value of the electric loss tangent. The model for the loss tangent which best fits the observed data is significantly different from that describing particulate basalt. Calculations were also made for comparison with earlier observations at the same frequency of the total lunar eclipse on February 10, 1971. Variations in the observed eclipse and lunation curves between regions are sufficiently great to prevent matching all the observations with a single model.

Notes: Abstract El-Raiyan lakes were created as a reservoir for agricultural drainage wastewater in the Western Desert of Egypt. Physical and chemical properties of water from 17 sampling stations in the lakes and in the springs of the surrounding deserts were monitored every three months during the years 1984 and 1985. Concentrations of metals (cadmium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, selenium, and zinc) and of inorganic anions (sulfate, sulfite, sulfide, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, cyanide, thiocyanate, halogens, carbonate, silicate, and phosphate) were generally lower than those reported for other lakes of Egypt which are used as wastewater reservoirs. The concentrations of metals and inorganic anions in water varied according to the distance from the origin of the lakes, depth, and seasons of the year. Concentrations of heavy metals in fish and in selected wild life fauna and flora of the surrounding deserts were also determined. Animals living near the lakes had much higher concentration of heavy metals, particularly lead, mercury, and cadmium, than animals of the same species collected further away from the lakes.

Notes: Abstract Whole Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba collected along the Western Antarctic Peninsula, were analyzed for 14 elements. Average element abundances (in parentheses) in μg/g, in descending order, were as follows: P(9940), Cu (80.5), Zn (43.5), Fe (28.0), Se (5.80), Ba (3.78), Mn (1.98), As (1.92), Ag (1.71), Ni (0.54), Cr (0.30), Cd (0.29), Pb (0.22), and Hg (0.025). Inverse relationships were found between krill length and Hg concentration as well as between As and P levels. A geographic trend of increasing Mn and P levels from southwest to northeast along the Antarctic Peninsula was Sound. Results were compared to earlier data for evidence of metal concentration changes due to anthropogenic activity over the last 15 years.

Notes: Oryza sativa L.) may be useful in determining the need for topdressing fertilizer N at panicle differentiation (PD). In a 3-year field study, plant area, N concentration of the Y-leaf (most recently matured leaf blade) and the whole plant, and chlorophyll meter (SPAD) readings measured during vegetative and early reproductive growth stages were used to estimate total N accumulation. The techniques were then used to determine the growth stages that maximized correlation with grain yield. Five preflood (PF) N rates (0, 33, 67.2, 100.8, and 134.4 kg ha-1), two PD N rates (0 and 67.2 kg ha-1), and two cultivars (LaGrue and Lacassine) were used. The treatments were chosen to represent an array of dry matter and total N accumulations. No interactions of PF N rate × cultivar on grain yield and total N accumulation were observed. Plant area was linearly correlated (r = 0.84 to 0.93, P 〈 0.05) to dry matter accumulation, and accounted for 〉 60% of the variation in total N accumulation every year. However, Y-leaf N concentration and SPAD readings accounted for 〈 60% of the variation in total N accumulation in 1993 and 1994, and for 〉 60% only in 1995. A combination of plant area and Y-leaf N concentration of SPAD readings accounted for more variation in total N accumulation than did individual plant measurements. Plant area and whole-plant N concentration was the best combination. The maximum variation in grain yield accounted for by the measured traits was 50% at PD for plant area, and 37% at 2 wk after the PF N application for Y-leaf N concentration and SPAD reading. These low correlations of grain yield with plant measurements during the vegetative stage confirm that environmental and other conditions prevailing during later growth stages profoundly influenced grain yield of rice.

Notes: Abstract Results from a survey of power utility biologists indicate that terrestrial biodiversity is considered a major issue by only a few utilities; however, a majority believe it may be a future issue. Over half of the respondents indicated that their company is involved in some management for biodiversity, and nearly all feel that it should be a goal for resource management. Only a few utilities are funding biodiversity research, but a majority felt more research was needed. Generally, larger utilities with extensive land holdings had greater opportunities and resources for biodiversity management. Biodiversity will most likely be a concern with transmission rights-of-way construction and maintenance, endangered species issues and general land resource management, including mining reclamation and hydro relicensing commitments. Over half of the companies surveyed have established voluntary partnerships with management groups, and biodiversity is a goal in nearly all the joint projects. Endangered species management and protection, prevention of forest fragmentation, wetland protection, and habitat creation and protection are the most common partnerships involving utility companies. Common management practices and unique approaches are presented, along with details of the survey.
