Description: Postmenopausal diabetic women have a high risk of fractures. Salidroside has preventive effects on estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis and has hypoglycemic effects on diabetes in rats. However, whether salidroside inhibits bone loss in postmenopausal diabetic patients is still unknown. Here, we established a rat model of osteoporosis to investigate the protective effects of salidroside on bone loss induced by ovariectomy combined with diabetes, also investigating the underlying mechanisms. Two-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three equal groups (10 rats in each group): control group (with sham operation, treated with drug vehicle); OVX/T1DM group (ovariectomized diabetic rats); OVX/T1DM-SAL group, comprising ovariectomized diabetic rats treated with salidroside (20 mg/kg body weight) by gavage. The results showed that after 60 consecutive days of treatment, the bone mineral density (BMD) of OVX/T1DM-SAL increased significantly compared with the OVX/T1DM group (p 〈 0.01). The level of serum bone turnover markers, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), cross linked c-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-1), osteocalcin, N-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen (PINP), and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP 5b) were all increased in the OVX/T1DM group compared with the control (p 〈 0.01), and those were decreased by salidroside treatment. Meanwhile, the bone histopathological changes were also attenuated, and the bone marrow adipogenesis was inhibited in salidroside treated rats. Moreover, protein and mRNA ratio of bone osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) was upregulated in ovariectomized diabetic rats by salidroside treatment. The results above indicated that the protective effect of salidroside on bone loss induced by ovariectomy and diabetes was mainly due to its ability to suppress bone turnover, inhibit bone marrow adipogenesis, and up-regulate the OPG/RANKL ratio.

Description: Diabetic Osteoporosis (DOP) is a common metabolic bone disease, characterized by decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and destruction of bone microstructure. It has been reported that icariin is beneficial for estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis, and alcohol-induced osteoporosis; whether icariin has protective effects on diabetes-induced osteoporosis has not been reported. In this study, a rat model of diabetic osteoporosis was established by streptozotocin injection, the bone protective effects and potential mechanism of icariin on diabetes-induced bone loss was observed. Thirty 8-week-old female Sprague Dawley rats were divided into control group (vehicle treatment), T1DM (diabetic) group and T1DM-icariin (ICA) group (diabetic rats treated with icariin), 10 rats in each group. The bone histomorphometry parameters, bone mineral density (BMD), serum bone turnover markers, and bone marrow adipogenesis were analyzed after 8 weeks of icariin administration. The results showed consumption of icariin at a doses of 100 mg kg−1 decreased blood glucose, and increased the BMD of diabetic rats. Icariin effectively decreased serum bone turnover marker levels, including CTX-1, ALP, TRACP 5b, osteocalcin, and PINP. Meanwhile, the bone histomorphometry parameters, the number of osteoclasts per bone perimeter were turned to be normal level, and the icariin treatment suppressed bone marrow adipogenesis. The runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX 2), as well as the osteoprotegerin (OPG)/receptor activator of nuclear factor-κ B ligand (RANKL) ratio in serum and bone tissues were increased significantly after icariin treatment in diabetic rats. All of the above indicate that oral administration of icariin can prevent diabetic osteoporosis; the effect is mainly related to its ability to reduce blood glucose, inhibit bone turnover and bone marrow adipogenesis, as well as up-regulate bone RUNX 2, and OPG expression.

Description: Most structural components undertake cyclic loads in engineering and failures always cause catastrophic economic losses and casualties. In the present work, the phase evolution of Al-Si coating of high-strength boron steel during hot stamping was investigated. Two types of 1500 MPa grade boron steel sheets, one with Al-Si coating and the other without, were studied to reveal the effect on the high-cycle fatigue behavior. The as-received continuously hot-dip Al-Si coating was composed of α(Al), eutectic Al-Si and τ5. After hot stamping at 1193 K, three phases formed in this coating: β2, Fe(Al,Si)2 and α(Fe). The experimental results showed that the endurance limit of the coated steel sheet was 370 MPa under 107 fully reversed tension-compression loading cycles as opposed to 305 MPa in the uncoated sheet. Both the coated and the uncoated specimens showed surface-induced transgranular fatigue fractures. In the uncoated sheet, the fatigue cracks were generated from the decarburization surface, but the Al-Si coating effectively prevented the occurrence of near-surface decarburization during high-temperature hot stamping, and the only cracks in the coated steel sheet were initiated at wire-cutting surfaces.

Description: The occupation mechanism and magnetic transition behavior of trace Zn and P alloying in the sub-rapidly solidified LaFe11.6Si1.4 magnetocaloric plates were investigated. The LaFe11.6Si1.4, LaFe11.6Si1.4Zn0.03, and LaFe11.6Si1.4P0.03 plates were fabricated using the centrifugal casting method in the present work. Experimental results showed that both Zn and P elements were distributed in the La5Si3 and LaFeSi phases during sub-rapid solidification. After annealed at 1373 K for 72 h, the LaFe11.6Si1.4 plate underwent a second-order magnetic transition, while both the LaFe11.6Si1.4Zn0.03 and LaFe11.6Si1.4P0.03 plates underwent a first-order transition. In combination with X-ray diffraction results, it was proposed that both Zn and P atoms prefer to enter the 96i site substituting for FeII/Si atoms according to the density-functional reconstruction of crystallographic structure. The Zn addition led to a slight decrease in magnetic entropy change from 7.0 to 5.9 J/(kg⋅K), while the P addition strikingly enhanced this property to 31.4 J/(kg⋅K) under a magnetic field change of 3 T. The effective refrigeration capacity of the annealed LaFe11.6Si1.4P0.03 plate reached 189.9 J/kg.

Description: As a safety device, a rupture disc instantly bursts as a nonreclosing pressure relief component to minimize the explosion risk once the internal pressure of vessels or pipes exceeds a critical level. In this study, the influence of temperature on the ultimate burst pressure of domed rupture discs made of 316L austenitic stainless steel was experimentally investigated and assessed with finite element analysis. Experimental results showed that the ultimate burst pressure gradually reduced from 6.88 MPa to 5.24 MPa with increasing temperature from 300 K to 573 K, which are consistent with the predicted instability pressures acquired by nonlinear buckling analysis using ABAQUS software. Additionally, it was found that a gradual transition from opening ductile mode to cleavage mode happened with increasing temperature due to more cross slips occurring under serious plastic deformation. The equivalent stress, equivalent strain and strain hardening rates acquired by static analysis were effective at rationalizing the temperature-dependent fracture behavior of the domed rupture discs.

Description: The complexity of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) missions is increasing with the rapid development of UAV technology. Multiple UAVs usually cooperate in the form of teams to improve the efficiency of mission execution. The UAVs are equipped with multiple sensors with complementary functions to adapt to the complex mission constraints. Reasonable task assignment, task scheduling, and UAV trajectory planning are the prerequisites for efficient cooperation of multi-functional heterogeneous UAVs. In this paper, a multi-swarm fruit fly optimization algorithm (MFOA) with dual strategy switching is proposed to solve the multi-functional heterogeneous UAV cooperative mission planning problem with the criterion of simultaneously minimizing the makespan and the total mission time. First, the multi-swarm mechanism is introduced to enhance the global search capability of the fruit fly optimization algorithm. Second, in the smell-based search phase, the local search strategies and large-scale search strategies are designed to drive multiple fruit fly swarms, and the dual strategy switching method is presented. Third, in the vision-based search stage, the greedy selection strategy is adopted. Finally, numerical simulation experiments are designed. The simulation results show that the MFOA algorithm is more effective and stable for solving the multi-functional heterogeneous UAV cooperative mission planning problem compared with other algorithms.

Description: This paper investigates the prediction of different streamflow characteristics in ungauged catchments and under climate change, with three rainfall-runoff models calibrated against three different objective criteria, using a large data set from 780 catchments across Australia. The results indicate that medium and high flows are relatively easier to predict, suggesting that using a single unique set of parameter values from model calibration against an objective criterion like the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency is generally adequate and desirable to provide a consistent simulation and interpretation of daily streamflow series and the different medium and high flow characteristics. However, the low flow characteristics are considerably more difficult to predict and will require careful modelling consideration to specifically target the low flow characteristic of interest. The modelling results also show that different rainfall-runoff models and different calibration approaches can give significantly different predictions of climate change impact on streamflow characteristics, particularly for characteristics beyond the long-term averages. Predicting the hydrological impact from climate change, therefore, requires careful modelling consideration and calibration against appropriate objective criteria that specifically target the streamflow characteristic that is being assessed.

Description: In the Tibetan Plateau (TP), the changes of lake ice phenology not only reflect regional climate change, but also impose substantial ecohydrological impacts on the local environment. Due to the limitation of ground observation, remote sensing has been used as an alternative tool to investigate recent changes of lake ice phenology. However, uncertainties exist in the remotely sensed lake ice phenology owing to both the data and methods used. In this paper, three different remotely sensed datasets are used to investigate the lake ice phenology variation in the past decade across the Tibetan Plateau, with the consideration of the underlying uncertainties. The remotely sensed data used include reflectance data, snow product, and land surface temperature (LST) data of moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS). The uncertainties of the three methods based on the corresponding data are assessed using the triple collocation approach. Comparatively, it is found that the method based on reflectance data outperforms the other two methods. The three methods are more consistent in determining the thawing dates rather than the freezing dates of lake ice. It is consistently shown by the three methods that the ice-covering duration in the northern part of the TP lasts longer than that in the south. Though there is no general trend of lake ice phenology across the TP for the period of 2000–2015, the warmer climate and stronger wind have led to the earlier break-up of lake ice.

Description: In order to increase the gain of an end-fire antenna array and improve its broadband characteristics, techniques using a dielectric lens and defected ground structure have been investigated in this paper. The element of the array was constructed using an antipodal tapered slot, and two pairs of U-slots were symmetrically cut on the edges of the two antipodal fins to obtain better performance regarding impedance and radiation in the wider band. While loading an ellipse dielectric lens onto each element, the direction and gain were enhanced at the higher frequency. Meanwhile, a defected ground structure was added on the ground plane to decline the mutual coupling of adjacent radiation arms. This design method was verified by a four-element array and a four-way Wilkinson power divider was used as a feed network. Finally, a fabricated sample was tested. Experimental results showed the designed array was available.
